The last SOTD of the 2010s - so I'm going to pick something from 1996. Pavement - Gangsters & Pranksters, the second song on side A of the Pacific Trim 7" EP. |

Opening up a bottle of Rioja, tucking into lasagne and tuning into BBC 6 Radio I have to say I really enjoyed… Liz Lawrence – USP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBiTAGQ3 P4M |

Stuart, Copy of 'Pity Party' ordered. There is one used copy of her debut album ( Bedroom Hero ) on sale on Amazon but I decided to pass as it is going for £154.47!!! Ordered a promo copy at a more reasonable price of €4.50 plus shipping from Discogs. It seems that she may have had some involvement with the Bombay Bicycle Club prior to going out on her own. The band are new to me but well worth checking out in my opinion. I particularly like the drummer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIsovBFB NYE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KIm-I9k pi4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cew-nhOS p14 ( pre Liz ) |

Well, I often get a bit over-enthusiastic about stuff when I'm knocking back Rioja, Hugh, so I hope the whole album is good too! I also liked the determinedly unglamorous video. |

That drummer is indeed great! Excellent song, too. Nice to see that the guitarist is Ewan MacColl's grandson. |

Stuart, No need to worry as I checked out a few of her other YouTube videos before purchasing the two albums. I also ordered the entire Bombay Bicycle Club back catalogue even although I don't think she features on any of it. I did not pick up on the Ewan McColl connection so thank you for pointing it out. From DK 18. I finally heard from my seller, who only has a 13 transaction history on discogs. Whew! I look forward to getting my copy. Bombay Bicycle Club sound like a better version of the Wild Beasts. It's interesting that they got so much media support here in the States. The vocalist sounds Scottish. Am I right? Agreed about the drummer. |

Randy, The band hail from Crouch End, London. Steadman, McColl and de Saram met aged 15 at University College School, Hampstead, with Nash joining the group sometime thereafter. McColl obviously has Scottish connections but I don't know if any of them are Scottish born. I have the entire Lavandera back catalogue on digital download and a CD copy of 'Hacia El Mar' on route from Discogs De Kirlian. I have burned the first three releases ( Lavandera I; Lavandera II and Lavandera III ) to CDR and it seems to work as a album. Eighteen tracks but the running time is still only 43 minutes 58 seconds. I love them. |

Interesting Hugh. I would swear Steadman sounds Scottish, or conceivably Irish. Maybe his parents relocated once his accent was established? As you know I keep trying to get physical copies. For Lavandera I found a single "near mint" copy of DK 18. Postage from Spain unfortunately doubles the price of the disc but that's just the price of unobtainium. Jigsaw had a copy of "Hacia El Mar" so I'm good there. |

Martin Stephenson and the Daintees - Running Water Wow, a real Maxell LN90 flashback moment when this intro scampered out of the radio. I was sure it was the Stars of Heaven till the vocal kicked in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcxaL1a6 ptw |

Can't find much about Steadman's roots, but he does sound like a bloke after my own heart: “I don’t know why or when it happened but I just started to really like travelling as slow as possible, not being in a rush. Flying, you’re just going from A to B as quickly as possible; I just find it really boring… I just like to look out the window, listen to music, read a book… I prefer travelling alone. I can’t handle the diplomacy of travelling in a large group: Where’re we gonna eat tonight? What we’re gonna do today? It’s like, I’ve got my list of things I want to do today so I’d rather do that than have the company. (He should try going around with a big party of Italians one day…) If I have an afternoon free, I’ll go sit in a pub and read a book. I don’t see many bitters in the US. A bitter is flat, not cold. It sounds horrible but it’s delicious. It’s quite nutty and dark brown. Every pub in the UK will have a bitter. In the middle of winter there, there’s nothing more satisfying than a pint of bitter.” He talks about bitter rather than heavy, anyway. Reminded me of my first trip to Newcastle and the first night in the pub there when I absent-mindedly tried to order a pint of heavy. "Oh, we don't sell none of that stuff here, laddie." Took me a loooooooong time to get my pint. |

Ok, I don't hear any obvious accent on that song. Perhaps a hallucination on my part all along. Not really my musical thing but it's quite well done and I very much appreciate the move to real (non-digital) instruments that seems to be spreading around. |

Mighty Mighty -- Weather Girl Possibly (for me) the best song on Mighty Mighty's new album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgzeahYu n7o And they even played it at the 100 Club gig I attended last June. It was essentially lost on me then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU6ImhQo Z4Y |

Patrick Watson - Adventures in Your Own Backyard A bit of a kitchen-sink thing musically, and his voice is almost too creamy for me, but this still sounded pretty great on Radio Fip this morning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD7Z0cmx QRc The wife preferred: The Leisure Society - The Sober Scent of Paper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XoxcW7K kEA and she might just be right. |

Back to British radio for festive music and carol concerts and chirpy DJ backchat and so forth and those occasional, embarrassingly intense moments of seasonal nostalgia that burn up the back of the eye-sockets. Another Leisure Society song just played, Hugh, so something for me to investigate when the hols are over. Meanwhile: The Bees – Winter rose https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAImG6OP q0I |

Big Thief - Not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIcVwH47 uxQ Another French radio discovery on a wet Sunday drive back. Love her voice and the song's focus, insistency and intensity. Not convinced by the guitar thrashout...seems to work better on this live version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKmD6-pi K2A |

Todd Snider - Talking Reality Television Blues. Thank you, Rob, for inspiring me to check this out. (I have a few Snider albums, but overlooked this one for whatever reason.) Downloads/streaming makes so much instantly accessible now. Although, not everything. Amazon music did not have The Feelies Time For A Witness when I had a hankering to hear it earlier without having to bother walking to the CD racks and hoping I'd find there in the Fs between Only Life and Here Before. |

Kim Gordon - "Air BnB" I've liked and loved various solo projects by former Sonic Youths Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo. But what I didn't know I missed was the anarchic spirit of Kim Gordon. On this track - and on pretty much all of her recent record - she gets closer to the Sonic Youth essence than any of them. |

Alain Bashung - Madame Reve Well, really nice to have this come on the radio over breakfast. Though it also raised the slightly gloomy thought that, growing older, I guess it will get less and less likely that there will be that thrilling moment when you realise that you have a previously unknown great artist’s whole oeuvre suddenly there before you to explore. Fingers crossed, though. |

Three other interest-sparking songs today: Minnie Riperton - Les fleur I don’t think I’ve heard much by her except the inevitable and exceptional Loving you, but this is a stunner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1kDd6yB QZ4 Trolle & Siebenhaar – These streets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfqKmZPt x_k Would I have guessed this was a Danish couple? Absolutely not. Ran Nir – Obsession https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7hK1kgv OIo Another new name to me with a work-pausing tune. Johnny Dee certainly got it right: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/tvan dradioblog/2009/may/18/fip-radio |
