Whew, after a bit of a lumpy run of radio songs this morning that had my wife growling from the kitchen, Liz came on to the save day. "We have this don't we? I like this one!"

Ennio Morricone - Mucchio Selvaggio

RIP Maestro, one of the truly great originals. He’ll soon have those harpists upstairs whipped into shape, possibly with a bit of choral whistling.

A new L. A. Salami album is coming out in ten days.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odI921hi nG8

He also dabbles in a bit of hip hop which isn't my cup of tea:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TivGuXFb Y1I

In the meantime, being the prolific writer he is, he also tossed off an EP back in February:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_iGke6s 43A

The new album is available on vinyl or CD. The EP is digital only.

Thank you for that, Pádraig. You reminded me of them. I just ordered a used copy of the CD version of "Me and Mr. Ray."

I still wish there were a CD version of "The Backyard."

After posting my comment above I realized that I should check bandcamp, so I just did exactly what you recommended about an hour or so ago Andrew.

I've had a surprising back and forth with the seller of "Me and Mr. Ray" on discogs. After getting my payment he explained how it fits in the band's history and offered his opinion that it's their best album and why. I think you might have told me something similar Andrew. And he explained why I might have been so lukewarm to "Drenched." So I told him it reminded me of how long it took me to figure out the appeal to the Triffids because I'd unfortunately first heard "Calenture." He'd only heard that as well, so I directed him to a string of earlier songs to check out on youtube and what albums to consider buying and now he's telling me how much he likes "Bad Timing" and "Hell of a Summer." The far-flung music grapevine reinforces itself yet again.

Randy, Andrew, I got Me And Mr Ray from Bandcamp after being reminded of You’re The One Lee while listening to an almost quarter century old tape of a radio show done by a friend in Glasgow. I found it in the garage while looking for something else. My friend was delighted as it was his final show and he no longer had a copy of it himself.

While on Bandcamp I also saw that there is a much expanded version of The Songs Of Mark Mulcahy, so I bought that too. I have the original one disc CD of it. https://markmulcahyhq.bandcamp.com/album /ciao-my-shining-star-the-songs-of-mark- mulcahy-deluxe-edition

I thought I already had Me And Mr Ray on CD, but it’s Drenched that I have and I recall being disappointed in it in the same manner Randy mentions above.

Oh, man, Miracle Legion. "The Backyard" is such a favorite. I still have it on vinyl but since I don't have a turntable I play a version I cobbled together from various MP3s years back. It always sounds kinda timeless. And it brings up a very specific memory of driving through Vermont in the late 80s.

I encourage all of Randy and Padraig to relisten to "Drenched." It's quite good.

Miracle Legion just never seemed to have much luck. In ’89 Peter Buck of REM was raving about “Me and Mr Ray” and then Rough Trade went belly up in the States no nobody could get their hands on the record for months. And the whole “Drenched” era was a whole sad saga. The company Morgan Creek made huge amounts of money on the Kevin Costner Robin Hood film and decided to set up a music division. ML got signed, had loads of money thrown at them in the studio and the production of “Drenched”...and then basically ignored due to internal problems in the company.

I remember in ’92 going to see them in London (an absolutely amazing gig) and finding out that they had come over the Atlantic just to play a gig in a pub in Portsmouth, that London date and one other gig in England. And there were no press interviews set up for them and “Drenched” had just come out. Then everything fell into a limbo situation for years, with the band unable to get out of a contract with a company that had no interest in ever doing anything with them !

I can’t remember the band being down about that record at the time...they loved The Smiths so working was John Porter was a dream come true. But later on I’m sure that Mark Mulcahy said that he preferred the demos and was even talking of trying to put those recordings out.

Mark had an awful accident (hit by a car in NY) and then lost his wife in terrible circumstances (hence the tribute record to help him and his twin daughters out financially). Ray’s wife died a few years ago too. He lives in Edinburgh now and plays with a band called “Borrowed Books” (with Cameron Fraser ex of The Cateran, Scotland’s very own Husker Du)

And Mark’s solo career continues...his records are always interesting with the occasional gem.

And yes I agree with Rob’s comment about “The Backyard”...the song itself is so simple...but there is a timeless quality to it. Like “Cattle and Cane” a type of yearning for the past ?

Pádraig, thanks for the Headless Chickens vid – I saw them live in Sydney in 1988 with a girl I fancied a lot. Hey ho, In a different timeline...

In my present timeline, I was told yesterday that I'm to be made redundant in a month or so. Okay, there is a 30-day period of consultation but that will change diddly.

This will be my fourth redundancy (hey, who wants cycling journalists these days ?!) and I'd like to do a Venn diagram of them. Two of them were voluntary; two of them were from essentially the same job; two of them with the same employer; three of them while working on cycling magazines. Hope that's clear!

And don't worry, I'm very sanguine at the prospect. I was dreading the return to full-time work post furlough; now I've just got to eke out a few years of gainful part-time or freelance work until I can retire.

Weird in this cycling boom era.
Here it's difficult to find cycles anymore in the shops, everything is sold. And for next year, it seems there will be also a shortage of material. Guns industries should recycle themselves…

Simon, I'm sorry to hear that, too. I echo what TROU said - it seems unfair and ironic that during this bike boom, you'd be deemed redundant (I hate that term). My advice, and what do I know? Start a bike blog for novice and maybe not-so-novice riders, post everyday and charge a small subscription. You might be surprised what your knowledge is worth and to how many people. I just inherited my dad's 1986 Trek, which he probably hadn't used since 1988, and it's been years since I had a bike. I have a million questions, like, what's the best lock? How do you change a tire? Is my seat ruining my backside? What helmet will protect me when I inevitably get doored? Etc., etc. Everyone in Chicago is out on their bikes - I've never seen more cyclists. Seems like you could leverage all that know-how you have and monetize it.

The right question, Rob, is "is this seat ruining my urethra?" And I'm not kidding. I remember when I almost doored a poor guy on a bike. Riding was still pretty uncommon in the area at the time. There was no contact and he didn't lose control but I felt terrible. It certainly raised my consciousness as a car driver. Look at that mirror before you open the door!

Simon, I'm counting on your confidence that you'll be able to bridge the gap between where you are and pension eligibility. Rob's idea about a blog is a very good one. (TROU's idea about repurposing gun manufacturers is a good one too.) As perhaps one of the last living persons who was able to work for a single employer for my entire professional life I well remember how nervous that last half-dozen years was for me. How are your folks doing?
