Wow, Andreas, enjoy your 2LP version. I love 12 inch 45's. On my system they sound better, perhaps because I play them on a rumbly ancient idler-wheel driven Garrard Type A with a punchy sounding Ortofon DJ cartridge. I won't claim the rumble sounds good but the cartridge and relatively high-mass tone arm sound great. The 33's are played on a quiet belt-driven Thorens with a polite and accurate Audio Technica cartridge. | ||

Andreas, the Jetstream Pony needs another listen or two. It came in at the same time as too many other releases and got smothered by them. I've certainly always liked the sound of full platter 45s the best but I was never sure if it was indemic to the larger grooves and higher running speed or maybe just to the equipment combination I used. Andreas, I'm glad you reminded me of the Jetstream Pony album as I pulled it out and listened last night. I've been taking on an avalanche of music during Covid. One of the problems with that is that quite a few releases get lost in the shuffle. By the time I heard Jetstream Pony the first time I was already numbed by all the music I'd been listening to that day. So on that first listen I just thought JP were pleasant but nothing to write home about. But I'd even forgotten they were female-fronted! So that'll tell you how much value there was to that first listen. On second listen I find a band that seems to throw into the blender a bit of downbeat Clean, less shoegazey Lowtide, maybe just the faintest tincture of Neu! and a great drummer who kept reminding me of the Troggs' drummer from over 50 years ago. I think of Clean because of JP's grasp of basic and direct rock grooves. I think of Lowtide, no doubt, partly because of the female singer but also because of a somewhat similar sense of melody. Maybe I let the knowledge of the German surnames for the rhythm section players influence me but I think of Neu! because of JP's penchant for consistent rhythmic grooves with a feel of mechanism to their sound and yet it's played by people and not machines. And the drummer really does remind me of the Troggs' drummer from the mid-to-late '60s. Jetstream Pony seem to have figured out a specific sound for themselves and they drill down into the ground with it. I found the album very atmospheric in the sense that it created an entire mood in the house while it played. I enjoyed the album more and more as it progressed, mostly because of the cumulative effect it had on me rather than because the songs were any different toward the end than they had been near the beginning. Discogs describes JP as "power-pop, post-punk and indie-pop." I don't hear the post-punk in them and I'm not sure I'd call them power pop either, though I can understand why someone would. A third and fourth listen will clarify some things for me. | ||

Stuart, They released a single, ep and mini album ( Pinstripes & Englishmen ) between 1993 / 1995 on Sunday Records and then disappeared from the music scene. They resurfaced in 2011 and have since released several singles, an ep and an album ( Everlasting Light ) on Shelflife Records plus a single and ep on Dufflecoat Records. That's a really nice cover of the Richard Thompson song. Fortunately it's not hard to source a copy of the mini album. The video that shows a reel of Ampex 456 tape is chilling. It turned out that this type of magnetic recording tape deteriorates seriously with age. The coating sheds from the plastic base material, thus shedding the recorded signal. If that Proctors mini album is recorded on Ampex 456, the master is probably already grossly inferior in sound to the digital CDs that were produced from it. | ||

While I'm waiting for my new debit card I have to use a credit card account. This reduces me to Amazon which I have linked to a credit card rather than the debit card. Amazon is normally my last resort and when I buy from there I buy from their Marketplace sellers and not from the company itself. On this occasion it yields some truly weird results. If I ask for the Proctors' "Everlasting Light" album I get a price of $41.27 for a CD, or if I'm not satisfied with that there are two Amazon Marketplace offers of approximately $450 and $550! Who would even post such nonsense? If I click the blue "Proctors" link in the listing I get the mp3 song selections plus a little link to "CD" and another to "vinyl" or "LP." The CD link shows a string of sellers offering the CD at $14.99 and other similar prices. One of those sellers is Amazon itself. The blue "Proctors" link does not get me "Pinstripes and Englishmen." But if I request a search for "Proctors Pinstripes and Englishmen" I get a half dozen or so sellers offering good (or better) used copies for prices reasonably near the offers on discogs. Amazon is now clearly too large to even manage its own database. | ||

Randy, The majority of Discogs Sellers offering 'Pinstripes & Englishmen' for sale are U.S.A. based which makes sense as Sunday Records were a Chicago based outfit. Not so easy to source over here. Given that the 'Everlasting Light' CD can be purchased for Ł10.00 ( US$13.13 plus US$5.25 shipping ) from the band's Bandcamp page ( 8 remaining ) some of those Amazon prices are crazy. | ||

Hugh, this era of expensive international shipping is really dreary. Discogs does show a seller of "Pinstripes and Englishmen" in Finland but that seems to be it for you, unless you're willing to order from a Singapore seller with an exceptionally low satisfaction score on only 22 transactions. I figured that a 2015 release from Shelflife couldn't possibly be rare. In fact, I haven't tried but I wouldn't be surprised if a copy can still be obtained directly from the label. | ||

Randy, Shelflife Records did have a website at one time but only their Blog now exists and any attempt to access their list of artists / catalogue / shop results in a '404 - Page Not Found Error.' Clicking on 'News' takes you to their Bandcamp page where there is only a very limited amount of music available to purchase ( cd / digital download / vinyl.) 'Everlasting Light' by The Proctors is not available from the label. However, if you click on 'Artists' and then 'The Proctors' it will take you to The Proctors Bandcamp page where you can still purchase the CD. I am fortunate in that I already have CD copies of 'Pinstripes & Englishmen', 'Everlasting Light' and the Cloudberry Records release 'The Proctors' in my collection. | ||

Andrew, She does indeed but sourcing her back catalogue can be difficult especially if you are looking for CD or Vinyl as I suspect she self releases them in small quantities. She does not even have a decent Bandcamp presence with only a single track ( Holes In The Story ) available for digital download. I do know of a website where you can purchase high quality digital downloads of a substantial amount of her back catalogue if you are interested. | ||
