A couple of tracks from the forthcoming Power Of Dreams comeback album. The two songs already available bode well for the full album. https://powerofdreams.bandcamp.com/

Great album. I often wish the other Mick had hung on in there. He gave them something musically which Ronnie never could, and probably deserved a few credits here and there.

Stuart, I was just thinking something similar - how Mick Taylor brought a different flavour to the band and greatly enhanced everything of theirs he played on.

WZLX, a Boston radio station I never listened to when I lived there. But as the two stations I did listen to back then, WBCN and WFNX, are both defunct, I thought I’d give WZLX a chance. Amazing and all as the technology is that brings a radio station from the other side of the world into my home, my initial listening choices from decades ago have been vindicated.

Joshua Burnside - Into The Depths Of Hell. An Irish musician who is new to me, but this is his third studio album. He has also released a live album and a couple of EPs. This proves the worth of album reviews; I would not have heard of him otherwise. Think Will Oldham with even more of an Irish traditional influence.

Cool Sounds -- Dance Moves.

Cool Sounds is one of the many Melbourne bands related to Ocean Party, in this case through Liam Halliwell and Nick Kearton. Hugh sent me a CDr copy of this--perhaps their most Ocean Partyesque album--long ago. I decided to shell out for a vinyl copy.

Dub Noir - Pick Your Century. It's been ages since I last played this. Randy introduced me to them. Almost certainly the most New Zealand-sounding band ever to come out of Columbus, Ohio. There's a little bit of Brisbane in their sound too, but mainly Dunedin.

My Apartments CD has just arrived, will try to get round to it later, accompanied by a nice little b & w postcard of a stately-looking abbey in the north of France, now used as a psychiatric hospital, apparently. I used to buy stuff from an Athens outlet which also sent postcards with their merchandise, it's nice to get a bit of local flavour, until their postal price suddenly went up to over 7 euros per CD. No idea why that happened, but no way to hit back at Amazon, that's for sure.

As is so often the case, Hugh gets the credit for Dub Noir, Pádraig. I agree they're very Dunedin. I wish they'd made some more recordings.

Very honest of you, Randy. Yes, another Dub Noir album might be good, but maybe it's for the best to make one smart, literate, slightly leftfield pop album and not risk a disappointing second. And their name is likely to keep them a secret forever. No one is going to see the name Dub Noir and expect a Dunedinish guitar pop sound. Some reggae fans are going to be a bit disappointed though.

Hanoi Rocks – Tracks From A Broken Dream. A compilation of rarities by the Finnish/English band whose career ended when their drummer Razzle died in a car driven by a drunk Vince Neil of Motley Crüe. Neil got a 30 day sentence and served 19 after paying a $2.5 million fine.

Ginnels -- Crowns

Complete with cover photos that surely must have been taken at the dead zoo in Dublin.

From 2012, this sample ("Wake Up Normal") is definitely jangle pop:

The Dead Zoo would make a great name for a band, of any sort. I never thought of that Pádraig. Maybe people would object to it like they did to The Viet Cong as name for the postpunk revival band in Canada. They relented and switched to the forgettable name Preoccupations.

I'd forgotten about The Viet Cong. They were great. I completely lost touch with them when they changed their name.

I've just been listening to a brilliant cassette only Robert Scott compilation called RePort, which rounds up various 7 inches, tribute album contributions and outtakes. The tape is long sold out, but you can listen to/buy the files here https://robertscottnz.bandcamp.com/album /report

Sparklehorse - Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain. The opening track, Don’t Take My Sunshine Away, is one of the most perfectly Beatlesesque pop songs not made by The Beatles. What a loss to the world Mark Linkous’s death was. I’m so glad I saw them live in London in 1996. Tindersticks, High Llamas and Babybird were also on the bill. What a gig. https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter tainment/pop-tindersticks-baby-bird-high -llamas-sparklehorse-the-astoria-london- 1325214.html

Cordrazine - From Here To Wherever. A 1998 album by a Melbourne band that I got in a charity shop recently. This is my first time playing it and I’m blown away. The singer/guitarist/songwriter owes a great deal to Jeff Buckley, but mainly through his vocals. The music is more lush and less rock than Buckley. Here’s an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXdFhh2- F1w

The Paradise Motel - Derwent River Star

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6pjzvq7 sS8

From their album Flight Paths which was released in 1998. No. 32 on ABC.Net / Double J's 'The 50 Most Overlooked Songs Of The 90s.' The compilers could just as easily have chosen the following song from the same album.

Wow, that's a difficult video for "Is It Alright Between Us" Hugh. I wanted to scream "tie up her arm, guy!" Nice song though.

Paradise Motel's "Flight Paths" was classic album. A person can grab quite a few songs from it. My first choice will probably always be:

Pádraig, the Cordrazine song that you posted is great. It has a bit of the blend of melodrama and mystery that Augie March would offer in a few years. The song "Crazy" from the 1997 EP is also good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Tog1vV- xCE

"Clearlight," the first song on your album, bangs just on the edge of being overblown and I can see how Hamish Cowan might have fallen into the trap of self-parody if Cordrazine had taken off commercially. But they didn't make another album until 2010 so that didn't happen.

Interestingly Cowan was previously in a band called Blindside. I have their album somewhere. I bought it because it was on Summershine Records but remember being disappointed by it. Now I'll have to hunt it up and see if I still agree with that.

Randy, I got that EP on the same day in a different charity shop. I’ve been doing quite a bit of charity shop digging in recent times. Thrift stores as you call them in America, op shops as they call them in Australia (op being short for opportunity).

That was very good. Only one song is over three minutes.

I followed it with Bruce Springsteen’s new single, Ghosts, which is far better than the previous promo from his upcoming album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo5QNcFi oZ4&list=PLJ3gKh8Ty5pYbHPj2k_cL8LxiZUvQc nXw&index=1&ab_channel=BruceSpringsteen& src=Linkfire&lId=b94b59a4-78cd-4ba3-a689 -a6e5538db41e&cId=a7e0a4df-a4e6-4286-a1c 5-a948eba1c2c2

Steve Earle - Townes. An album of covers of Townes Van Zandt songs. The duet with his son Justin Townes Earle on Mr Mudd And Mr Gold is heartbreaking given JTE’s recent death.

St Lucia - Matter, because sometimes I just want to listen to an upbeat dance pop album. If Phoenix were more influenced by 1980s music, they’d probably sound like this. St Lucia’s main man Jean-Philip Grobler has a French-sounding name, but he’s a South African who lives in New York.

Vinx - Rooms In My Fatha’s House. An extraordinary jazz/soul/funk/African album that I recently came across in a charity shop. I’d never heard of it, but it looked interesting. Best $2 I ever spent, maybe. This review sums it up very well https://www.allmusic.com/album/rooms-in- my-fathas-house-mw0000674349

Enzso by Enzso, another charity shop find. It is Split Enz songs orchestrated by the band’s former keyboard player Eddie Rayner, and it is mostly heinous. It’s all so overblown; most of it has the subtlety of the music on a Sunday afternoon Lassie film. Neil Finn and/or Tim Finn sing on most of the songs on it. Wisely, I’ve just read, they played no part in a second volume that followed a few years later. (The albums came out in 1996 and 1999.)

Just because you can add strings to a pop/rock song doesn’t mean you should. This album is a prime example of this.

Ah well, you win some, you lose some.

Pet Shop Boys - Discography. I bought this last year, I think, but this if my first time playing it. It’s a 1991 singles collection and is the first PSB album I’ve ever bought. It’s great pop music. Though I liked the occasional song, I was too much of a guitar rock fan to properly appreciate them in my formative years.

Monochrome Set -- Chaps

Right now, the second disc. It was this anthology that many years ago made me aware that the Monochrome Set had a second wind in the 1990s. I thought they'd ended with "Reach For My Gun." Bid indulged himself in his very mannered offbeat humor to the nth degree in that period but there are still a lot of great tunes, buckets of inspiration from Lester Square and, now and then, Bid would stop time with something like this:

Unlike most New Zealand bands that I love, they are more influenced by Talking Heads and other US acts than they are by other NZ bands. https://cutoffyourhands.bandcamp.com

Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love. I’ve considered this to be one of the greatest albums ever made since I first heard it 35 years ago. This is my first time playing the whole album in a long time and I noticed something I’d never realised before - the traditional Irish melody of Cloudbusting. I love that an album that came out when I was a kid is still revealing itself to me in middle age.

Has someone hacked or kidnapped you, Randy, or have you just taken to referring to yourself in the third person?

All three scenarios are concerning.

Silver Jews - American Water, on cassette on the kitchen boombox. It must be 20 years or more since I last played it. I must have played it a lot back in the day, though, as I was recognising all the songs.

Bestia Bebe -- Jungla de Metal 2

This is Argentine band Bestia Bebe's second album, released in 2015. It's the first of theirs that I've heard. This is joyous raw power pop-styled rock. No fancy production. No high concept. Just a great band with good pop sense. With an awesome lead guitarist. Twelve songs clock in at 34 minutes and change. On first listen, there's not a dud on here, even if it is their sophomore effort.

This makes a sort of 1960s/1970s Australian sense to me. Buenos Aires is a stupendously big city in the Southern hemisphere, isolated from much of the rest of the world by geography and by their own difficult economics. But that doesn't mean they don't listen to music and then turn around and create their own with as much passion as any of the rest of us. And if they want a music scene they have to create their own.

I’m listening to a playlist I made of songs with American or American in the title - Don McLean, Tom Petty, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, James Brown, Violent Femmes, Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Waylon Jennings and Lou Reed.

Is it too early for a Christmas song? It's never too early for a Christmas song. Calexico's new single Hear The Bells owes so much to Fairytale Of New York I hope they give The Pogues a co-writing credit. But it's still great.

Pádraig, it is too early for a Christmas song. Definitely. We haven't even passed Halloween or Guy Fawkes Night (one for the Brits there). Shame on you!
