Malcolm Middleton - Buzz Lightyear Helmet

Nice to hear Malcolm again, here in epic 8-minute suite form. He’s feeling shite but he’s going to have fun on the east coast he sings at the end, well, good luck to you there, son.

Thanks Stuart for bringing that new Dominique A 4 song release to our attention at the end of August. Minimal indeed. But beautiful.

I'm addicted to the first track, Andrew, Papiers froissés... it's great to have a song I have to hear at least five times a day, hasn't happened for a while.

Kristin Hersh – Your Ghost

Just discovered this today and it's fabulous. I saw the Throwing Muses at the Bristol Bierkeller in 1989 and Kristin Hersh solo twice, and she's fantastic.

Simon, how bizarre. I was just having a text conversation with a friend about Kristin Hersh and how I’d first seen Throwing Muses supporting REM in Great Woods outside Boston in 1989. I saw them a few years later in Dublin and have also seen her solo twice - in a university hall in Austin and in a tent in Sydney. She’s a unique talent.

Have you seen this? https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/s ep/09/throwing-muses-cult-band-interview -kristin-hersh

Pádraig, that's where I discovered Your Ghost. I spend an inordinate amount of time on the Guardian's website, mainly slack-jawed and aghast at our present government's apparent disdain for the law. Ah well, what could possibly go wrong?!

But at least we have Kristin Hersh. And I think it's time for me to go through the Throwing Muses/Kristin Hersh back catalogue.

REM - Carnival of Sorts

I know REM are quite divisive but their first handful of albums stand up against anything in modern music (is 1980s modern? Who knows...)

I love jangly guitars, wilfully obscure lyrics and the sheer passion of this cracking live version for 1983.

Cosmo Sheldrake - Cuckoo Song

With a name that sounds like the bad boy in a Billy Bunter story, here’s Cosmo with a Benjamin Britten tune, apparently, words by the lady who also wrote Twinkle twinkle little star. All very pastoral and lovely to wake up to on a Sunday morning.

Vetusta morla - La Deriva

Oh dear, that terrible YouTube cliché, “Money Heist brought me here…” I can’t stand the damn series myself, but the wife has a love-hate thing going with it, so I’m stuck with it for a bit. I haven’t managed to get into much of the Spanish jangle – Spangle maybe? – featured here in recent months, maybe because none of the voices seem to work for me in that particular context, but then I lived there for three years without really getting into a lot of local music, except for Luis Eduardo Aute and Maria del Mar Bonet perhaps. But I do like this song a lot, even without the uber-sultry Úrsula Corberó – because nothing in this series is not way over the top – doing a rather fetching drunken dance to it.

Stuart, there was an indie band called Radial Spangle in the 90s. I may be the only person who remembers them, though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radial_Spa ngle

The GBs - Finding you

Strolling up to the car to meet the wife and help her with the shopping and this great tune there blasting out, took me a few seconds to realise what it was... then it was a bit of crazy if sedate old man dancing while small children pointed anxiously from the public gardens. How good to be surprised by joy!

May Erlewine and Woody Goss – Back soon

Beautiful sounding cool traditional groove about which I know nothing except that it was recorded in Chicago and that May’s voice sails over the top like the smoothest, sexiest thing imaginable. “I don’t know where you’ve been, but I hope that you’re coming back soon…” Ends with a classic sustained organ note and a snappy drum move which probably has a proper name which I don’t know. Gorgeous. No link available yet.

MIOSSEC - Non non non non (Je ne suis plus saoűl)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51ytS2PV WF4

Nifty piece from M's first album, apparently getting some sort of anniversary rerelease, though I haven't worked out if any extra goodies are present are not. Like Dom A, he has also put out a lockdown EP, some of which sounds very lush. DomA also gets a mention in the question & answer session cited below, but I've still to get to proper linguistic grips with it.

I am currently reading the first volume of Robert Sidelsky's enormous biography of John Maynard Keynes. I'm at his Cambridge undergraduate years when he was inducted by Lytton Strachey and Leonard Woolf into the Apostles, a secret society. I have limited enthusiasm for secret societies and their contrived exclusivity but in reading about this one, how nonmembers are dubbed "phenomenal" I immediately thought of an old treasure I hadn't actually heard in at least a decade, a song whose lyrics still pop up in my head unbidden at lovely random moments . . . .

The Kinks -- Phenomenal Cat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrklNk5O F-c

Is it possible that the working class Ray Davies was aware of the Apostles and their designation for everyone outside their little clique as "phenomenal" in this oh-so-Edwardian song? Is his cat phenomenal in the Kantian sense, the idea of the cat rather than the fact of the cat? Or is this merely a case of a semi-literate American discovering one of the less common senses of a word hideously overused in the compulsive hyperbole of his native country?

Whatever. It was anachronistic in 1968. It is timeless now.

Randy, a great song from a great album. Thank you for reminding me of it. I think Davies may have meant cat as in hippie speak for a cool person.

Song of the day is Robert Scott doing a very good My Bloody Valentine impression on the almost nine minutes long instrumental Baron 5 (Harmonic Deluxe) https://robertscottnz.bandcamp.com/album /report

Ultim Cavall -- Records de Kyoto

The title song from their first album (and the entire album) wears well with repeated plays. Their second album from last year is less subtle to my ears.

I don't normally link live versions but their sheer discipline and competence as a band shines here even if the lead vocal doesn't project well enough.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngkvz0w3 Atw

and here's the studio version just in case:

I didn't intend to post two songs of the day yesterday; I thought the Steve Earle one had not gone through.

Today's SOTD is Ana Damir El Motakallim by Issam Hajali, a Lebanese musician who recorded it in Paris in the 1970s. The mix of eastern music with rock is sublime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jNbJuRh uYc

Daria Huber – John my beloved

This is the kind of thing I love Italian X-factor for, a slightly tremulous 17 year old lass giving a sweet, crystalline performance of a Sufjan Stevens song. Proud dad looks on. There’s a bit of Italian talk over, inevitably, but the judges are suitably & forthrightly impressed.
