In the past few days I’ve been having a very odd problem with iTunes. On longish songs that I’ve ripped from my own CDs or downloaded from non-iTunes sources such as Bandcamp, the songs stop playing at exactly 5.37 and move to the next song. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I found a suggested fix online - ticking a box in the track info tab - which worked once, then didn’t the next time. The problem also happens when burning a mix to CD, long songs are only burned up to 5.37.

I use a Mac, not a PC, if that makes any difference to possible solutions.

Padraig, An unusual problem to say the least. What programme(s) do you use to rip and burn non iTunes sources to CDR. I am a PC user and have no experience of the Apple Mac or iTunes.

Hugh, I use iTunes to rip CDs, but I suppose files from other services will have been made using different software. It started when I retrieved files from an external hard drive. In internet searches I can see I’m not alone (no one else seems to have the specific 5.37 stop time, but some others have different specific stop times), but have yet to find a proper explanation or fix.

Well, I whole heartedly approve! A song should never be longer than five and a half minutes (says the guy who's done at least of handful of offenders).

Pádraig, it sounds like there's a corruption in the files on your external hard drive. Have you tried listening to the songs while they are played BY the external hard drive? The first thing you want to know is that the entire song is there. Perhaps Andrew will have an idea.

It IS a way to get rid of half of the pointless part of "Hey Jude."

Padraig, My first suggestion would be to try ripping and burning with a different programme. If that works okay then the issue is likely to be with iTunes.

If, as you say, it is a recent problem then I am wondering if the following may be the cause of the issue.

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/06/tech/ apple-explains-itunes-changes-trnd/index .html

Recent Windows 10 updates have played havoc with programmes on some PCs.

Randy, my love of prog rock and 80s 12 inches (New Order, Kraftwerk, M/A/R/R/S etc) means a whole lot of my music goes well beyond five and a half minutes. In fact, it was after burning a New Order mix that I realised there was a problem.

Hugh, thank you for the link. I did update Word on my computer recently. Bloody Bill Gates, it's not enough that he's spreading Covid around the world through 5G networks, he's also ruining my iTunes.*

*Just in case anyone thought I was serious with the previous sentence, let me assure you, I was not. I am making a comment on moronavirus conspiracy nut jobs.

Padraig, You may already have tried this but, if not, check the stop time showing for one of the longer songs that stop playing / burning at 5 minutes 37 seconds.

https://www.idownloadblog.com/2019/04/10 /details-song-info-itunes-apple-music/

It will be shown under 'Options.'

I gave up, nothing worked more than once. I've downloaded a different music playing app and that works fine.

Hugh, it's called Omni-Player and it only plays files. It can't be used to burn discs, and it's not user friendly. You get what you pay for, in this case I paid nothing.

In the meantime, though, iTunes has started behaving itself, probably due to an operating system upgrade I downloaded the other day.

Thank you for your help will this. I hope I never have to return to this thread with further problems, but I suspect I will.

That problem started happening again in iTunes, which is most annoying. I discovered, however, that deleting the song from iTunes (but not from the computer) and then playing it again from wherever it's stored, works. Very tedious, but at least it's a workaround.
