I've kinda lost the run of myself with the Roman numerals, so I'm making this new one November 2020. I hope no one minds.

Ups And Downs - Another Country. A five song covers EP. All very good (Outdoor Miner) to great (Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime).

The Men - Tomorrow’s Hits. The track Settle Me Down sounds like The Go-Betweens, I’ve just noticed.

AC/DC. I need some heads down, no nonsense hard rock to get me through the next 30 or so hours. Fey pop just isn’t going to cut it for the moment.

I paused too long after saying Alexa (I was about to ask her to play NPR) and she said “Here’s an album you might like, Soft Bomb by The Chills.” Seeing as it’s my favourite ever album, I have to applaud the machine learning inherent in that. I’ll switch to NPR soon, though.

There was some Republican prick on NPR, so I switched it off. I then turned on ABC News on TV, but they they also had some lying Republican prick on. So now I’m listening to Kraftwerk’s Tour De France. Ah, that’s better for my blood pressure and sanity.

Thanks, Trou. Your post helped me feel the serenity.

Silver Jews - American Water. I recently rediscovered a cassette copy of this in my garage while, as usual, looking for something else. What an album. I must have played it a lot back in the day as I remembered all the songs. Maybe I have a CD copy of it somewhere too.

Miracle Legion and Amy Rigby. You're on a roll of my faves, Padraig. Play a little Sonic Youth and you'll reach nirvana (the state, not the band).

Maybe later, Rob. Right now Leonard Cohen’s I’m Your Man album is tickling my fancy. Something just made me think I needed to play it right now, and I am. Oh, the first song is First We Take Manhattan, so maybe I was getting a subliminal message related to the US election.

“Everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that it’s moving fast.”

Yeah, the US election was definitely calling on me subliminally to listen to I’m Your Man.

Being a C86 kind of guy, I think of Close Lobsters songs. Like "Foxheads Stalk This Land." Or "Too Bloody Stupid." Or I just think of McCarthy.

An Amazon Music playlist just pitched up a track I’d never heard before and I liked it. To my astonishment, it’s Counting Crows, a song called Mr Jones. I’ve hated Counting Crows’ music since I ever heard of them. Now I’m wondering if I ever actually previously heard a single song by them. My dislike was probably based on a bad review in Melody Maker.

Really you've never heard Counting Crows before, Pádraig? They made one good album, which has Mr Jones on it, their first possibly, and I know it fairly well because it's one of my wife's favourites! And it does feature a bunch of highly listenable songs. They were never able to replicate its quality or success, as far as I know, though continue to pump stuff out.

Gemma Hayes - Night On My Side. It had been a very long time since I'd played this album in full, and I did so just now after being inspired by a discussion on another thread.

I'd forgotten the country influence on the first half of the album and the huge My Bloody Valentine influence in the second half, before ending with a return to country and pastoral folk music.

I've never seen this album in any "greatest ever Irish albums" list, but it should be. It's so perfect, it makes me think she must have been thinking "I may only get to do one album, I'm giving this everything."

Cinderella - Rocked, Wired & Bluesed, The Greatest Hits. They were lumped in with the 80s hair metal bands (not helped by their hair metal hair), but Cinderella were always closer in sound to AC/DC and The Rolling Stones than Motley Crue-style crap.

It’s A Shame About Ray is a perfect album provided you don’t have the reissue with Mrs Robinson tagged on.

I feel much the same about reissues of High Land, Hard Rain and Boat to Bolivia.

Pylon: "Gyrate" and "Chomp." Finally re-released and two peaks of early 80s American indie rock. If you don't know, they're an Athens, GA band, contemporaries of the B-52s and REM. They've also released a pricy boxed set that includes both albums and demos and live stuff. I'm not that much of a fan boys; these do just fine.

Rob, I bought their compilation Hits on tape twice within a week in 1989. I first got it in Wuxtry Records in their hometown of Athens (which made me feel very cool). And then, having played it and loved it, it promptly disappeared from my overstuffed bag on a flight from LA to Boston. I blamed an indie-loving baggage handler. A couple of days after that I was in Tower Records in Greenwich Village in New York and bought it again. Mercifully, it was the only time I've ever had to replace an album so quickly. I still overstuff my bags with new music purchases though, to the point of having had to buy two new bags in Heathrow a few years back.

Haha! That's terrific. I think "Hits," which I also have, has all of "Gyrate" and half of "Chomp" but I like having them separate. Plus, nicely remastered. They were a great band.

Rob, it’s got almost all of Gyrate, a big chunk of Chomp and both sides of their first single Cool/Dub. I only knew about them because REM had covered Crazy. A fine cover of a brilliant original.

How could they leave "Cool" off "Gyrate"? One of their best tunes. Seems perverse.

I suspect it was the punk aesthetic of singles sometimes being stand alone releases. The Jam and The Clash, in particular, were proponents of this.
