Ah, that's good, innit? Great way to start an autumnal Sunday morning! Very Robert phrasing! Oh wait, that's track 2! No wonder I couldn't pick out Karen. So:

Although, before Pádraig led me astray, my choice was going to be:

Midlake - Roscoe

Fantastic to hear that great song again. Trials was an exceptional album, did they ever get to that level again? I think I bought their following disc, listened, sighed, and tucked it gently away forever.

One of the reasons I've happily diversified to a lot of non-English language music is because the lyrics in the majority of songs simply aren't worth knowing. You won't very often find something on the level of "I Pity the Poor Immigrant" or "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" nor even the dinner party wit of "Inferno." Most pop music people have seldom, if ever, opened a book. And if your lyrics aren't any good, for f--k's sake don't print them out on your video.

Happy U.S. election day, everyone.

I was a bit slow getting up this morning. I came out of the shower to the sound of my neighbors banging pots and cheering. I went to the computer and saw the news that Biden has won the election. That cacophony by my neighbors is the best song I've heard in a very long time.

I live a few very short blocks from where Sunset Boulevard and Hollywood Boulevard come together. I'm hearing a lovely continual peal of car horns on parade. Another lovely song this morning!

OMG, Austin! If you yielded to that temptation every day, you've be in Forest Lawn by now!! I have a friend who loves the Ti and we'll go there whenever he drops by for a visit. (He lives in the northern San Fernando Valley). It's a fun classic old Angeleno haunt. I'm a lightweight as a drinker--literally as well as figuratively--so I only go there on those occasions when Sam wants to go. But, like all bars in Los Angeles, the Tiki's been closed during Covid. I'm hoping they own the premises. It's likely that they do as they've been there for so long.

Randy, I think you are right that I wouldn't be long for this world if I went there daily. I too hope Tiki-Ti opens after COVID. The most striking thing about that bar (apart from the Tiki drinks that hit like a steamroller) is that you can smoke in the bar (or at least you could last time that I was there) because of a strange LA law that allows owner-operated bars to permit smoking. It was like I was back in the 1990s with all those people lighting up!

John Barry - Journey to Blofeld's Hideaway

I thought I’d turned on the radio to some music for Remembrance Sunday or maybe an elegiac accompaniment to Trump’s stately exit from the White House, but no, it’s Bond in a helicopter. Lovely piece of music though. Apparently the worst ever JB got the best ever JB soundtrack.

I get the idea you're not a great thriller reader, Randy, but the Fleming Bond books are excellent fun and completely different from the bombastic cinema sequence, enjoyable nonsense though they could be (and nostalgic if, like me, you saw most of the Connery films up at the Regal with dad). What Ian McEwan does with a balloon ride or a honeymoon dinner Fleming could do with a game of bridge. I remember when I eventually picked up Casino Royale to read how adult and sweaty and tough it seemed and the punch it packed.

Paul Simon - Getting Ready For Christmas Day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA_1GXjP SIw

From his best late period album, So Beautiful Or So What. I thought it was from maybe 2014, but it’s 2011. I was astonished. I can usually tie albums down to the exact year, and often the exact month.

Oh, and having just checked, I see that Getting Ready For Christmas Day was released as a single almost exactly 10 years ago.

Thanks for the Madness song, Pádraig: I have the feeling there are a lot of good Madness tunes out there I don't know at all. Very Beatlesy melody. I guess "She" is the wonderful Maggie T. I'm looking forward to seeing how Gillian Anderson tackles her on the Crown. I suppose I can't hold her wholly responsible for my years of unemployment back in the 80s, but I sort of do. In the end I followed charming Norman Tebbits's advice and got on my bike, all the way to Sweden and an unexpected life in teaching. It can hardly be called a career, but the amount of laughter it led to has been worth its weight in gold.

Stuart, Madness are, of course, best known for their fabulous singles, but there are also many gems to be found among their non-single album tracks. Victoria Gardens was co-written by Cathal Smyth, whose sole solo album, A Comfortable Man is brilliant and worth picking up if you come across it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Comforta ble_Man

Ah, Padraig, that Teenage Fanclub song has depressed me all week. It just isn't that good, to my ears. Gerry will be missed on the album, I'm sure.

Also, I hate to disagree, but Breaking Bad is better (so far) than Better Call Saul, although the show isn't over so I can't be definitive.

Any fans of "The Leftovers"? I just watched it and have to say that it has one of the best final episodes that I've ever seen. And it is not that big of a commitment - only 28 episodes over 3 seasons. Totally sticks the landing. (Although a show about 20% of the Earth's population disappearing may not be the best choice of a show to watch during these times....)

Hmmmm, lots of things to love with Saul, though it tends to be the surrounding characters that grab me more than Jimmy himself. A word for Patrick Fabian's Howard, a performance of wonderful comic poise. Breaking has that almost Shakespearean narrative for Walter which in the end carries the day. But, if we're talking Shakespeare, I'd vote for the Wire over both of them.

Austin, it will be interesting to see how Teenage Fanclub will split up the writing duties now that they are 33% writers down. Maybe Gerry's replacement will write. That new song does not augur brilliantly for what is to come (but I don't think it's terrible by any stretch, and it may be a grower).

Kacy + Clayton & Marlon Williams - I Wonder Why

Don’t often play stuff the old man would have enjoyed as well, but this would have fitted in ok with his Jim Reeves, Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash collection.

Bright Eyes - Persona Non Grata

Wow, bloody hell. Not just the bagpipes that put tears in my eyes when this came on this morning.

Mudhoney - Revolution & Spacemen 3 - When Tomorrow Hits. An unreleased split 7" in which the Seattle men and the Rugby men cover each other. Both covers are brilliant, though Spacemen 3 take the task a lot more seriously than Mudhoney.

Gillian Hills - Tut Tut Tut Tut

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sN21hNa eEA

Queen’s Gambit is maybe the first injection of sex into chess since the scene in Thomas Crown and Anya Taylor Joy is the most magnetically watchable screen presence in ages. And the soundtrack includes the Monkees, Kinks and this great 60s French beat girl song.

Cinderella - Shelter Me. A complete rip-off of not one, but two Rolling Stones songs from the same album (you'll have to watch the video to see what I'm talking about) and yet still great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgi5xdft OIA
