Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88sARuFu -tc

Watched the 2017 film "120 battements par minute", which focuses on a group of activists for Act Up-Paris in the 1980s. Excellent film and this song features.

Another contender for geatest ever Scottish song, instead of the bloomin' awful "Dignity" ?

Л.Федо&#10 88;ов+Кру& #1079;еншт&#1077 ;рн и парох&#108 6;д. ДЕНЬ

Leonid Fedorov, ex-frontman of Auktyon, and some Russian indie music, which in this case at least sounds like you might expect it to sound. The song is called “Day”, apparently, and that’s all I know.

Ah, interesting, now we know what Russian looks like when transferred to this site!

Stuart, Are you familiar with Auktyon?

I purchased their entire back catalogue last year from a Discogs Seller in the Russian Federation. Their multi disc ( CD & DVD ) sets are beautifully put together and some of their music is stunning. You can view images of the box sets on the following link. Click on 'More Images' below the box set cover. Everything you see along the bottom of the screen is contained in the box.

Thanks, Hugh! Good to see Russia had their own homemade version of Johnny Rotten. I think the band name has come up before, here and elsewhere. I'll do a bit more Utube browsing!

Drive-By Truckers - The Unraveling (not their last album, but a track from their soon to be released new album).

Post number 9999. I wonder if the next one will be 10,000 or like the millennium bug, reset to 1. We'll see.

Bright Eyes - Shell Games

The last track on this lockdown big-desk at-home concert, it’s from their 10th album or something, critics seemed to be getting a bit restless and grumpy with the prolific wunderkind and were fairly sniffy about it, but nothing much wrong with this song, I think. I love the way CO transforms from soft-voiced, Hobbit-eyed folksy “Hi everyone, so cool to see y’all, mighty fine to be here, love y’all” etc then picks up an instrument and appears to be possessed with the twitching, spitting soulchild of Loudon Dylan O’Newman.

Valentin y Los Volcanos -- Películas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tAjqwyn CvE

This is Sneaky Feelings from an alternative (Argentine) universe. This group has made two albums, the first in 2012 and the second, for which this great song is the closer, in 2016. The first album is very hard to source in physical form but the second one can be ordered directly from Plastilina Records. If Valentin y Los Volcanos are still going it's time for a new album.

Randolph's Leap - Up In Smoke

Oddly gleeful new song from this “Scottish folk-pop collective”, with the two grizzled distinctive Scottish landscapes of Adam’s face and the place itself.

Stuart, I was unaware of a coming album so thank you! It's nice to see that Covid hasn't stopped everybody from recording new songs even if it's perhaps required solo video performances with impressive backdrops. It looks like the new one will be on Fikasound. Grrr. Don't ask.

Ah! Thank you for the clarification Hugh. And the link. Pre-ordered! I did think it odd that a Spanish label had taken to issuing the albums of Scottish indie bands such as the Just Joans.

Bear with me, I'm Californian. I've never heard it before:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/d ec/14/coronation-street-theme-tune

The one linked to the article is better, but I have to say that the top comment posted to this youtube example kept me laughing for well over a minute:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNV_Hh5Z WaE

"When I was a kid this song meant it was time to go to bed because the living room is about to get a whole lot shitter."

Daniel Darc - Nijinsky

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3kCNrcb tJ8

Watched a very good documentary on him recently ("Pieces of My Life"). It's a shame that this clip on YouTube is such bad quality as it features in the film in perfect quality.

I had only heard of him before in relation to Bill Pritchard, whom is not even mentioned in the documentary. Pritchard lived with him for a while in Paris and they made an album together ("Parce que")

Thanks for that Andrew. I remember when you posted something from the album he did with Bill Pritchard which I liked. I ended up getting an early Pritchard collection. But the random search gremlins worked against me back then when I chose youtube samples for Daniel Darc. I never hit on anything a tenth as good as "Nijinsky." I see I can secure a "near mint" copy of the CD version of the "Nijinsky" album on discogs for a mere €180.

Laura Cantrell- Push the Swing

A truly massive talent who has been away for a long time and has crowd-funded her new release. I wonder how many fans know she is doing this.

Low - Just Like Christmas

A song that captures my own bittersweet feelings around this time of year better than most sleighbell-jangling anthems, as well as evoking long coach rides through Swedish winters – overheated, drowsy coaches, supplied with coathanger room for your heavy jackets and shoespace so you could leave your boots and slip into something more comfortable. Winter as a mere fact of life, not an always-unexpected tumult to bring civilisation to a grinding halt.

Bob Dylan - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere

Bob’s anticipatory lockdown sex song has fun switching up the lyrics and throws in a dig at Roger McGuinn for getting the words wrong first time round.

Swansea Sound - Corporate Indie Band

I heard this on Dandelion Radio’s Festive 50. I try to catch this every year to see if I’ve missed anything I really like. There’s usually 2 or 3 songs.

A few observations:

1 Where there used to be too many Fall songs they now have far too many by IDLES

2 The Beths are about half way up the chart with what I’d say is about the fourth best song on their album

3 There’s more songs that I own or know for many years

This song is by Amelia Fletcher and Hue Williams. The Pooh Sticks’ album The Great White Wonder is a masterpiece and here they are together 30 years on.

I went on bandcamp to buy it and saw that the previous purchaser was Beth Arzy of Jetstream Pony et al. I had a look at her collection and noticed a newish Even As We Speak album

Yves Simon - Au Pays Des Merveilles De Juliet

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFl-1cYQ Wa4

Sort of mid-period Battisti, music-wise, not the vocal.

If it wasn’t just the New Year lunch talking, Radio Fip hit a great groove this afternoon, including the above, but also:

Nancy Sinatra – You only live twice

which just stood out head & shoulders above the rest of the stuff, however good. That’s one of my “wish I’d been there” songs, you know, when the producers say, “Ok, John, so… have you maybe got something for us for the new Bond movie?”

“Well…”
