Ohtis and Stef Chura – Schatze

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud5eYbdI 9mA

Love this, recalling some punky Lee-Nancy type duet back in those days, which probably did exist, though nothing comes to mind right at the moment.

I think there must be a radio version of Schatze. It sounded like “thank you” the few times I’ve heard it. I haven’t been able to find it to buy, though.

I only know Stef Chura from a joint cassette release she had with the brilliant Anna Burch a few years ago. I’ll have to check out more of her stuff.

Randy, Unlike their first three albums the new one is not receiving a CD / Vinyl release for the time being at least. Available as a digital download from Bandcamp.

Track from their third album ( Blaze On A Plain.)

Oh, a lovely late evening Easter gift from Tanya – I lost touch with her work after some so-so stuff following on from Belly’s brilliant Star album, but she’s on beautiful form here.

Stuart, Ohtis is an interesting band I had never heard of before. I like this track from their album 'Curve Of Earth.'

The Go-Betweens - Darlinghurst Nights. How have I never previously noticed the strong jazz influence on it? I love it when a song is still revealing itself so many years after it came out.

REM - Exhuming McCarthy

A flinty, angry REM with a lyric where you can actually see what Stipe’s on about. I have a suspicion I never actually bought Document, maybe thinking it was a compilation, for some reason.

Francoiz Breut - Le fantôme du lac

Francoiz is back with a new album, Flux Flou de la Foule, and this song, although I thought, with that very delicately precise pronunciation, it was Jane Birkin at first. A welcome return, anyway. While the music reminds me a little of a young Vangelis in his halcyon experimental years, playing happily around with his set of tweaked keyboards.

Always good to be reminded of how stunningly good the Delgados were, and of Emma Pollock’s swooningly perfect voice.

Bess Atwell - Co-op

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzmI51Fc Ie8

I’ll dedicate this to Edinburgh’s old St Cuthberts chain, founded in 1859 “with the aim of providing decent food at affordable prices in a shop controlled by its customers as a co-operative” and where I nearly always did my messages in the 70s and 80s.

Hey, MES sounds reasonably enthusiastic about Edinburgh. I didn’t know he also wrote songs about things he actually liked. Obligatory swipe at the Festival, but there you go. I always thought a moment when even your gran’s garden shed hosted an amateur theatre group from Truro doing one of Beckett’s lesser known works twice daily was a pretty fun time. If the Royals will insist (not for much longer, one hopes) on dishing out geographical place names to its members, then they should at least be forced to spend half their lives there, but in typical local accommodation rather than one of the draughty old palaces. So old Phil could have had a wee flat in Pilton or something. Snarling out there on the balcony, pumping out bullets at the seagulls, excellent.

"Keep me away from the festival"

Except The Fall appeared in the (real) Festival, not the Fringe with "I Am Curious Orange". A bizarre experience at the King's Theatre with some Morningside ladies in the audience. I'm sure I've told the story before, but "God Save the Queen" blasted out over the tannoy system at the end as in the old days and all these ladies stood up. It cut after 5 seconds so they sat down again. And then it started again. Much confusion and mirth was had by all.

I did also have to discourage my mum going to ask Mark E for his autograph in a Chinese restaurant on Leith Walk. "Oh look it's that funny singer that your brother likes..."

Stuart and Andrew, you’ve both given me a laugh. Thank you.

Edinburgh Man is definitely the sweetest Fall song I’ve ever heard, and it’s also one of the best. Admittedly there are hundreds of Fall songs I’ve never heard, so there may be sweeter tunes in the archives.

I met MES on a train going to Edinburgh in August 1999. The Fall played one of the fringe music festivals the following day. He was in the vestibule end (as they call it in British trainspeak) smoking and somewhat the worse for wear. I was on my way back from a 3-0 home defeat to Hartlepool and marginally grumpier than him.

La Luz - "Cicada"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVaZuX5F RDA

A neo-psychedelia “surf noir” style with layered doo wop vocal harmonies, it says here, more or less. Certainly a lot of fun stuff going on anyway.

Grandaddy - So you'll aim toward the sky

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEF0Ksb1 ACE

This jumped out at me from a Ray Donovan episode last night, a moment of repose in between wall-spattering baseball bat beatings and massive whisky consumption. I’m not a big Scotch fan, but by the end of every episode it’s all I can do not to crack open a bottle of Macallan. Occasionally I like to imagine Jon Voight’s face as the first scripts rolled through his letter box. How he must have howled.

Everything But The Girl - The Only Living Boy in New York City

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgA6cpPN XEk

Currently reading Tracy Thorn's "Bedsit Disco Queen" (a very enjoyable read) and she mentions contacting Hal Hartley to direct a video for their cover of the Paul Simon song.

"He said that he could not in all conscience film a lip-synched vocal performance"

She says that it was the first video that they had liked since 1985. Certainly very identifiable as Hartley's work.

Thank you for that Andrew. I was never a EBTG fan but that's a very nice cover. And I love them using the mikes but not using them.

My song of the day is Tangled Shoelaces -- Rain Clouds

Put on your I Scream Brothers/Blue Orchids/Martin Bramah-era Fall hat for this one. It's what you get when a trio of precocious Brisbane siblings plus their equally young drummer neighbor sign to a scrappy independent label like M-Squared Records in the early 1980s: a possible Bee Gees of the post punk world:

The Lemonheads – Being around

Watched an ED open-air concert on YouTube with Evan in pretty good form, looking lucid and healthy and playing his songs with the respect they deserve to some happy Norwegians. I’d like to have been there, wandering around with a beer. Accompanied by Devon Ashley and Vess Ruhtenberg. I enjoyed the drumming, which kicks the songs up where they need to be. Good to hear things like Black gown and No backbone from the 2006 album.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGvnVdUu 6vU

That led me to Courtney Barnett’s delicate version of Being around, with those excellent lines: “If I was the carpet would you wipe your feet/In time to save me from mud off the street?/If you like me, if you love me/Why don't you get down on your knees/And scrub me?/I'm a little grubby/From being around.”

Well, he maybe never captured the zeitgeist, but at least the LebensGeist, if that’s a thing.

i actually really like Everything but the girl - i like Traceys voice in particular. Lots of good tracks all over their catalogue. Driving and the night i heard Caruso sing both spring to mind.

My current favourite is the troubled but brilliant John Murry's new track Ones and twos. A very nice guy i met in Glasgow years back who's problems are well documented. he was stick thin then - not so much now but sounding as good as ever.

i wish him peace first and then success,
