The Chills - Halo Fading. Some days this is my favourite Chills song. Today is one of those days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6aiAua4 lFI

That was meant to go in a new song of the day thread.

Anyway, I’m now listening to The Indestructible Beat Of Soweto, a 1987 compilation of South African township music. I remember it getting rave reviews at the time, particularly in the NME, which at the time was all about expanding its readers’ musical tastes and consciousness, even to the point of sacrificing expanding its readership. I was definitely interested in hearing it at the time, but never bought it. This was probably mainly due to lack of money, but I also don’t think I ever came across it. Well, 34 years on I did come across it and bought it without hesitation. I’m listening now and am about halfway through the first play. And it’s fantastic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Indest ructible_Beat_of_Soweto

Looks like it originally came out in 1985 on a British label, which must be when I read about it. My copy is the US release on the Shanachie label.

Pádraig, I should pull out my copy of the anthology. I haven't heard in it years. I remember it being quite good.

My song of the day comes from Montevideo, Uruguay which, sadly, currently scores as one of the places on earth with the highest per-capita new cases of Covid in the world. The particularly alarming part of this little fact is that Uruguay has the second-highest vaccination rate in South America at 50 shots per 100 people. This is a higher vaccination score than in the EU countries. Perhaps they've used the Sinovac jab that the Brazilians have reported to have a low efficacy.

For the song put on your trashiest (not thrash) punk hat:

The Albino Eyes - The Albino Eyes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDgrLgBZ mcM

The band hail from Brisbane, Australia, and this, their debut album, was released in 2013. Since then they have released a further three albums. I can only find mention of their second album ( Buchowski Kiss ) on Bandcamp and Discogs.

Myriam Gendron - Not So Deep As A Well. This is the most astonishing bargain bin find I’ve had in quite a while. She is a French-Canadian folk singer who has put music to short stories by Dorothy Parker. She got permission from the NAACP to do so, as it owns the rights to Parker’s work. Parker left to rights to Martin Luther King in her will, to then pass to the NAACP upon his death. He was murdered leas than 10 months after Parker died. How about that for a backstory to a record?

Fascinating, Pádraig, though her poems in this case, I think, not stories, neither of which I know very much about, to be honest. Hell of a woman, even if she did come down a bit too hard on poor Winnie the Pooh. Damn, another biography to add to my list.

Night Trains - Lovesick 1987-2017. Sometimes a bargain bin buy turns out to be an absolute gem. So it is with this soul/funk/jazz goodness.

The Chills - Scatterbrain. This may be the best album of their late career resurgence. If this damn plague ever ends I look forward to seeing them play these songs live.

Randy, I ordered CD copies of the album and their new ep via Bandcamp. The band sent me both along with the 12" vinyl version of the album, a T-Shirt and a Postcard. :-)

Hugh, it's a good thing you posted because I somehow missed the album! I'd only ordered the EP. I just went back on and corrected that oversight. Hopefully they haven't already prepared the package with the EP.

You cost me so much money Hugh! I'd checked them out before but had been holding out for the CD versions of their albums. I can't seem to find any so I just ordered both albums on vinyl from one seller in Spain.

Randy, I purchased digital downloads from Bandcamp. A CD version of 'El Resto del Mundo' can be purchased from the following link. I would have purchased CDs if both releases had been available from the site.

Lots of radio stuff selected by Phoebe Bridgers, which is maybe telling me something about why I’ve never listened to a lot of Phoebe Bridgers. She loves the long whinge song, which often sound like they go on a lot longer than they actually do. While’s she’s a hot name, she’s not much of a presenter. “Oh yeah, I really like this. It really resonates with me. She’s just such a great songwriter and this is a really resonant song. I love it.” Blah blah. She’s told one funnyish story so far, about someone she was making out with asking her to “please put on some music that doesn’t make me feel like I’m drowning”. One can only sympathise. Still, points for Song-Ohia’s magnificent Farewell transmission, Big thief and the Felice Brothers. Someone said in an interview recently that Ian Felice is one of the best songwriters out there at the moment, maybe I should check in on them again.

You made me laugh about Phoebe Bridgers Stuart !

I've been listening to her for quite a while but early on made the mistake of watching an interview with her. What can I say that is not too rude ? Her songs give an impression of someone with a little more "depth" ?!

Whilst on the same subject I discovered that people are paying crazy money for her first single ("Killer" released on Ryan Adams' label). Hundreds of dollars ? Maybe I should have an early Xmas ?

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - When God Was Great. This is their best album in almost a quarter century. They’ve expanded their musical repertoire beyond ska and hardcore to include country, rocksteady and straight ahead rock. Also, Dicky Barrett continues to chronicle the life of the working class Irish-American Catholics he grew up with in Boston with the observance of an author.

Smokescreens - A Strange Dream. Thank you Randy for the recommendation. The album opens with a lick previously known as Spring Rain by The Go-Betweens. These guys are Los Angelenos. Maybe they live near Randy and heard him blasting out Go-Betweens and Flying Nun records. https://smokescreensla.bandcamp.com/albu m/a-strange-dream

Hugh, the $40 shipping for purchases from Anoa Records via Bandcamp is crippling. Even the tiny 3 inch minidisc costs $40 to ship to me! But I managed to buy two TheMilo releases--not including the second album or "Lazy"--along with another Indonesian album from a Discogs seller with a shipping total of $30.

Randy, I have digital downloads of their three releases ( Photograph; Let Me Begin; Wasted Parts.) Two of the albums were and still are available on CD from Indonesian Sellers on Discogs but only one will ship to the U.K. and he / she wants £30.00.
