Restless Leg - The World's A Room https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGjSw0kX IoA The band hail from Sydney, Australia, and this song will be on their third album ( Dream Buffet ) to be released in June, 2021. It should appeal to fans of The Bats. |

Song of the Day, but maybe not performance of the day. In my occasionally borderline random exploration of the backstreets of the music of what I call "the other Australia" (Argentina) I've come upon the punk folk band Piquillin y los Compadres. They hail from Rosario, I believe. It sure is amazing just how far a songwriter's work can penetrate. The one comment the video has attracted is perfect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s2pzRzi Cgk |

Another lovely offering Hugh! I've just ordered one of the last copies of the vinyl of the second album. Not only the Bats, the sawing violin reminds me of another band . . . . |

Randy, Well travelled but too similar to the well known versions by The Dubliners and The Pogues. The following is, for me, the best ever version of the song and probably closest to what the original writer intended. Not the 'folkie version' that most people are familiar with. The Easy Club were noted for adding 'jazz, rhythm and swing' to traditional folk music. One of the best bands that Scotland ever produced. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=su7gJNzU R00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxX0oxIf R6Q |

You'll get no argument from me Hugh. The Easy Club version is the version of the song that I consider definitive, thanks to you. But I still found it amazing the song made its way as one of two outside songs on this obscure hamfisted slap-dash punky folk album It reminds me of another similar surprise I found on a lengthy 2 CD album by psych folkers Prietto Viaja al Cosmos con Mariano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j-7l06H 4Dk&list=OLAK5uy_m0d0F1Y0I9kyS2FgeYlCjKk ENoSoNU4Y8&index=2 |

REM - Radio Free Europe Athens, Georgia's finest on their first TV appearance. I love the noise, the chiming guitars, the obscure lyrics buried in the mix, Mike Mills' bass playing. Fantastic! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQo0cR1o nRM |

Electronic - For You Beabadoobee - Last Day On Earth Julian Cope - Head Hang Low (Radio 1 Session, 5 Feb 1983) Such an exhilarating radio threesome this morning, seemed a shame to break them up. I never paid much attention to the Sumner/Marr/Bartos collaboration, but it sounded brilliant today, so I had to turn up the volume and put the mutt walk on hold to listen to it all, only to have it followed by the newbie Beabadoobee and then the mighty JC. Beabadoobee turns out to be a Filipino-West London lass influenced by a rich stew of Elliott Smith, The Moldy Peaches, Pavement, Mazzy Star, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and Daniel Johnston. Whatever, it’s an excellent noise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwpVNq1F eEk |

A couple weeks ago the owner of a tiny label named Market Square Records posted a request on discogs for advice about how to sell older left-over stocks. I leapt over to Bandcamp to see what these might include. Market Square turns out to be the project of Paul Massis, with an address in Sussex but physical presence in Gijon, Asturias. The products are 7 inch vinyls, mostly 45rpm singles with an occasional 33 1/3 rpm EP. The artists appear to be an odd assortment of American and British indie pop and related genre sorts. A postcard advertises Market Square Records as ". . . the sound of no-where!!!" Surely a subtle jab at Theresa May. From the package of 8 small vinyls that I received yesterday my song of the day is . . . Talbot Adams -- Green Girl https://marketsquarerecordings.bandcamp. com/album/talbot-adams-green-girl-b-w-i- love-you-so |

Randy, I am sorry but I just don't get companies like Market Square Records. Why would you want to dictate to music lovers what formats they can purchase music on? Vinyl only as far as I can tell. I quite like both song on the Talbot Adams single but to get a digital copy I have to purchase the vinyl which costs considerably more for shipping than the record itself. The label is straight onto my 'ignore' list. If the owner wants advice then tell him / her not to try to dictate to people how they should listen to music. I honestly don't understand why some people still believe that vinyl is somehow superior to digital. Different perhaps but 'better'? I don't think so. In this day and age, vinyl is a cult market and sales will always be extremely limited. I honestly don't know what the people running these labels hope to achieve. I wish them well but the reality is that they will sell very few records and the vast majority will cease to exist in a very short period of time. Surely the whole idea of promoting music is to get it out there and most of these companies fail miserably in that respect. |

Sorry about that, Hugh. I didn't even notice that quirk. It is odd to insist that somebody buy a physical copy as a condition for download. I recommend that you check some of the other releases by some of the Market Square artists as many of them only released one or two records on Market Square and others elsewhere. On the basis of five songs on a Market Square EP, I've ordered a CD compilation of recordings by Skooshny. In the meantime, this is the wrong thread but I'm very much enjoying the second album by Restless Leg. I seem to have gotten the last--or near last--copy of the vinyl version from their bandcamp site. |

Well said, Hugh. For my tuppenceworth, I can understand the label wanting to sell the records first, but when even their sold out records are not available to buy digitally, it is doing a disservice to the bands and hastening the label’s demise. |

Skooshny - Flawed They didn't come from Los Angeles but that's where they did most of their work. They really came from Rob Brookman's environs. But, Pádraig, this was one of those trees in the desert. |

Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine - Je t'en remets au vent Youtube in its wisdom sent me back to HFT, and this beautiful early song of his. I ended up watching a lot of his live stuff, which I enjoy more when he’s working in the modified chanson style rather than trying to rock out, although it’s always fun to see the ubiquitous Yan Péchin and his hair in rock god guitarist mode. But one particularly strange pleasure is to see the crowds of people, of all ages, singing along with his often dense and convoluted lyrics, from the grey-haired bespectacled middle-aged like myself to snappy young girls cutting sharp dance moves, and to see an artist wholly imbedded in his culture, from those who grew up with his first albums to those who are just getting to know him now. It’s very moving, like when a Battisti track comes on the radio here and my wife immediately bursts into tears. It makes me feel very jealous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-ozZp5S BOU |

Pop Wallpaper - The Great Adventure https://youtu.be/pMtxTaJ3TME An Edinburgh band from '83 that I saw live quite a few times and I interviewed them for the excellent "Alternatives to Valium" fanzine. From a free flexi disc...who remembers those then ? The singer Audrey Redpath later recorded with Paul Haig, but I don't think anything ever came out. |

Big Brother - David Bowie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EOlZyD2 6T4 One good thing about having such a sketchy idea about DB’s work is being wrongfooted by great songs like this. I still hate the mannered way he pronounces stuff: roses/noses/capers, argh, which was always a barrier in the past, and a real brass section would have been good to have, but it still packs an undeniable punch. |

Bob Dylan - Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcWRJYFv V4w 80 years and still going strong, the great spookiness of the mighty Bob, a worthy Nobel winner if ever there was one. I probably didn’t have much of him in my little album collection, if anything, before buying Blood on the Tracks when it came out, on the basis of a full page NME review, Nick Kent?, and being just overwhelmed by Tangled up in blue and Idiot wind. Perhaps it was Bob’s capacity for rage that impressed me then: rage wasn’t such a common element in music, was it? And perhaps still isn’t? But it seemed to generate a passion in some of his songs that almost nobody else could reach; still can’t. |

Given the day that's in it, I'm gonna opt for a cover version of Bob Dylan's 'Blind Willy McTell' by G W McLennan which was broadcast on JJJ radio in Australia on 02 June 1991 which is almost 30 years ago now. |
