In my occasionally borderline random exploration of the backstreets of the music of what I call "the other Australia" (Argentina) I've come upon the punk folk band Piquillin y los Compadres. They hail from Rosario, I believe. It sure is amazing just how far a songwriter's work can penetrate. Randy, Well travelled but too similar to the well known versions by The Dubliners and The Pogues. The following is, for me, the best ever version of the song and probably closest to what the original writer intended. Not the 'folkie version' that most people are familiar with. The Easy Club were noted for adding 'jazz, rhythm and swing' to traditional folk music. I never paid much attention to the Sumner/Marr/Bartos collaboration, but it sounded brilliant today, so I had to turn up the volume and put the mutt walk on hold to listen to it all, only to have it followed by the newbie Beabadoobee and then the mighty JC. Beabadoobee turns out to be a Filipino-West London lass influenced by a rich stew of Elliott Smith, The Moldy Peaches, Pavement, Mazzy Star, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and Daniel Johnston. A couple weeks ago the owner of a tiny label named Market Square Records posted a request on discogs for advice about how to sell older left-over stocks. I leapt over to Bandcamp to see what these might include. Market Square turns out to be the project of Paul Massis, with an address in Sussex but physical presence in Gijon, Asturias. The products are 7 inch vinyls, mostly 45rpm singles with an occasional 33 1/3 rpm EP. The artists appear to be an odd assortment of American and British indie pop and related genre sorts. A postcard advertises Market Square Records as ". . . the sound of no-where!!!" Surely a subtle jab at Theresa May. Randy, I am sorry but I just don't get companies like Market Square Records. Why would you want to dictate to music lovers what formats they can purchase music on? Vinyl only as far as I can tell. I quite like both song on the Talbot Adams single but to get a digital copy I have to purchase the vinyl which costs considerably more for shipping than the record itself. The label is straight onto my 'ignore' list. If the owner wants advice then tell him / her not to try to dictate to people how they should listen to music. I honestly don't understand why some people still believe that vinyl is somehow superior to digital. Different perhaps but 'better'? I don't think so. In this day and age, vinyl is a cult market and sales will always be extremely limited. I honestly don't know what the people running these labels hope to achieve. I wish them well but the reality is that they will sell very few records and the vast majority will cease to exist in a very short period of time. Surely the whole idea of promoting music is to get it out there and most of these companies fail miserably in that respect. | ||

Sorry about that, Hugh. I didn't even notice that quirk. It is odd to insist that somebody buy a physical copy as a condition for download. I recommend that you check some of the other releases by some of the Market Square artists as many of them only released one or two records on Market Square and others elsewhere. On the basis of five songs on a Market Square EP, I've ordered a CD compilation of recordings by Skooshny. In the meantime, this is the wrong thread but I'm very much enjoying the second album by Restless Leg. I seem to have gotten the last--or near last--copy of the vinyl version from their bandcamp site. | ||

Well said, Hugh. For my tuppenceworth, I can understand the label wanting to sell the records first, but when even their sold out records are not available to buy digitally, it is doing a disservice to the bands and hastening the label’s demise. | ||

Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine - Je t'en remets au vent Youtube in its wisdom sent me back to HFT, and this beautiful early song of his. I ended up watching a lot of his live stuff, which I enjoy more when he’s working in the modified chanson style rather than trying to rock out, although it’s always fun to see the ubiquitous Yan Péchin and his hair in rock god guitarist mode. But one particularly strange pleasure is to see the crowds of people, of all ages, singing along with his often dense and convoluted lyrics, from the grey-haired bespectacled middle-aged like myself to snappy young girls cutting sharp dance moves, and to see an artist wholly imbedded in his culture, from those who grew up with his first albums to those who are just getting to know him now. I probably didn’t have much of him in my little album collection, if anything, before buying Blood on the Tracks when it came out, on the basis of a full page NME review, Nick Kent?, and being just overwhelmed by Tangled up in blue and Idiot wind. Perhaps it was Bob’s capacity for rage that impressed me then: rage wasn’t such a common element in music, was it? And perhaps still isn’t?
