The Wannadies - You & Me Song. This just came on BBC 6 music, and increased my happiness greatly. It's so long since I last heard it, and for it to pop up on a radio station is just wonderful. I've loved this song for a quarter century. I bought the single and used to play it every day when I got home from university. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_e_45Sz prk

Teenage Fanclub - Home.

After some listens, I prefer the new album to the one before. It has the Man Made's class!

Today's song for me is one I haven't heard in years. It was a favorite long ago and was very nice to hear unexpectedly today:

The Church - Anaesthesia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKMpluy7 yR0

Simon, I got a big kick out of that Undertones performance.

Just heard that yesterday, Trou! Not really got to grips with JG yet, but that's certainly a song I need to hear again.

Weezer - In the garage

Possibly encapsulates about 90% of everything I love about indie music.

Little Nemo -- Overprose

When the post-punk burlesque of this started I'd have sworn I was listening to something by The Stranglers.

Rare Bird - Sympathy. I knew it first through the 1992 Marillion cover, but this is the 1969 original https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vN6-1Ze g2w

Does that make me a youngster? At a mere 58 (and a third)?

I'm used to being the oldest these days. Before I was made redundant last year I worked in a large, open-plan office with maybe 70 or so people – and I was the oldest.

I mentioned this to the receptionist and she said no, I wasn't. And then when she thought about it, she agreed I probably was the oldest.

Anyway, the Beatles are great, and nearly as influential as the Fall!!

Hi Randy

For me it will take one more year than I will get 64 as well.
Best-ager :-)

Simon, I hope your freelance work is going strong. I'm guessing you and Pádraig are fairly close in age.

Robert Forster turned 64 on June 29. Though a little late, perhaps that was the inspiration for fsh' July 9 song of the day.

Andreas, the nicest thing for me about entering my 60s was finally recognizing that every single day is a new gift. I have a long list of friends who didn't get this far. So, happy 63 my musical brother!

Youngster!

It shouldn't be allowed. We should have a minimum age limit here...

(I still play 5- and 6-a-side football [soccer] and there really should be a minimum age for that; I'm literally old enough to be the grandfather of one or two of them...)

Meanwhile, back to Song of the Day:

I blundered onto the obscure dream pop genius of Rhys Griffiths when I picked up a CD by Mooncreatures issued on the now-defunct French label Beko. After Mooncreatures Griffiths moved on to Ski Saigon. The physical package completes his unique vision. Everything he does is worth pursuit.

The Left Banke - Goodbye Holly

From a distance, I thought it was a Beatles track I’d never heard before, but closer inspection revealed it to be a beautiful Brit-invasion pastiche by the New York band.

Stuart, "Goodbye Holly" was the kickoff song to Left Banke Too, the band's commercially unsuccessful second album. They were unable to repeat the success of "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina" both found on their first album. Back in the days of vinyl "Left Banke Too" was a massive collectible for the lover of independent 1960s pop music. Having failed commercially it was pressed in a much smaller quantity than the first album. I remember the great feeling of achievement when I finally found a good copy I could afford after searching for years. Of course later I stupidly gave it away after obtaining the excellent CD anthology "There's Gonna Be a Storm" that compiles the material from both of their albums.

Left Banke were early progenitors of chamber pop, their music inspired by the Zombies with the keyboard of Michael Brown nee Lookofsky laying the foundation in much the same way as Rod Argent's keyboard for the British band. Thanks to Michael's producer father's background with orchestras, a string quartet was often featured in the Left Banke arrangements.

The band fractured after Michael Brown--the band's primary (but not exclusive) songwriter--unwisely concluded that the other members of the band were expendable and produced a single "Ivy Ivy/And Suddenly" with a different singer and nondescript session musicians. Brown failed to appreciate that the Left Banke's Spanish-born singer Steve Martin (Caro) was an immediately recognizable and essential part of the band's chemistry as were the other singing members whose voices made up Left Banke's harmonies. Even the band's drummer George Cameron was part of that vocal harmony sound! And the other band members often contributed to the band's original material as well. The forgettable "Ivy Ivy" was a deserved flop. This misstep perhaps fatally broke the band's commercial momentum with the result that the ambitious "Desiree" featuring the proper Left Banke also flopped. Brown left shortly afterwards and "Goodbye Holly" was the next single offered by the band. "Goodbye Holly" (and its b-side "Sing Little Bird Sing") was written by Tom Feher, Michael Brown's collaborator on some of the band's earlier songs. "Left Banke Too" is a flawed but much better album than could be expected of a band that shed its original primary songwriter and keyboardist. It continued the chamber pop sound and added a measured dose of psychedelia.

Left Banke themselves proved to be an influence on other artists. Linda Thompson herself covered "I've Got Something on My Mind" after splitting from Richard and in my opinion Tasmanian chamber pop band Paradise Motel borrowed and updated elements from the classic Left Banke records. I've even noticed echoes of the tones of Left Banke's guitarist Rick Brand on some of their recordings. Dial up their song "Daniel" for the general idea if curious. I've posted it on this board before.

Here's Left Banke's version of "She May Call You Up Tonight" written by Brown and Steve Martin:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZSlF2Ak rS4

And here's the delicate b-side to "Goodbye Holly" that might have been just as likely a choice for promotion:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KluG57DM zAs

Michael Brown's notion that lead vocalist Steve Martin was expendable is incomprehensible.

And for good measure, here is the most overtly psychedelic song from "Left Banke Too" written by the band's bassist Tom Finn:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7SsdYza JPg

All they needed was the sophistication of the staff and machines at Abbey Road.

As you might have guessed, there was a time when I loved Left Banke passionately.

Stuart, thank you for reminding me of Goodbye Holly. I'm listening now.

Randy, thank you for your precise, potted history of the band. You've explained more in a few paragraphs than anything I've previously read about the band.

Yes, well, looking back today I see there was a senior moment. I meant to write that Linda Thompson covered "She May Call You Up Tonight," NOT "I've Got Something on my Mind"! (That is another LB song.) There's always something!

My song of the day is contemporary to "Goodbye Holly."

Scott Walker - Plastic Palace People

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3CEo_Ig xtY

This song opened up Side Two of Walker's second solo album. It was the first of his solo albums I was able to find in central California after hearing--and being totally floored by--an import copy of his first album. Scott Walker records were very thin on the ground in the early 1970s.

Pip Blom – Keep it together

Ah, just when you need a really great pop record! What’s this, Courtney Barnett fronting the Sundays? No, an Amsterdam lass and her band. Harmonies on the chorus are a straightforward rush of pleasure. Whew.
