Chet Baker - September Song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0ymGIwd D4A

I could probably try this for every month of the year but I'd end up with some real shockers!

But I like a bit of Chet, who's also one of the few jazz singers I listen to. I appreciate his totally pared-down vocal technique, there's no showing off for Chet!

Pádraig, you've presumably seen this, but there's an interview with David Crosby on the Guardian's website.

Bleach Lab - Real Thing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb7jfY_f PtY

More Sundays-influenced pleasantness, perhaps not quite strong enough as a song. I think I read somewhere that Reading Writing and Arithmetic was Prince’s favourite album, not something that I’d have guesse

Beirut - Nantes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCkT4K-h ppE

Ok, let’s take this one instead. I wouldn’t mind going to Nantes one day, the DomA connection perhaps. Maybe there’s a tour. And Limoges, home to Anorak records and a very cool looking bookshop. Everything seems so far away these days.

Stuart,

If you make it to Nantes one day, go to the old fishing community of Trentemoult. Today it is a wee haven for artists and our friends from Nantes have seen DomA there on several occasions. The last time they shouted a greeting from a café terrace and he almost fell off his bicycle :-)

I can imagine the headlines in Le Monde…

MUSICIAN DIES IN CYCLING ACCIDENT.

Witnesses say “elderly foreigner screamed at him in atrocious French.”

"I didn’t mean it to sound like a threat," explains tearful fan, "it’s just my Scottish accent."

Brilliant ! I think we've got a sound base for a play for next year's Edinburgh fringe :-)

Maybe DomA could play himself ?

Speaking of Scottish accent, I'm in the midst of "Shuggie Bain" right now. I honestly didn't know so many of the words I was exposed to from my childhood reading--presumably from 19th Century novels--would come in so handy.

Maybe it's not the done thing to shout out to pop stars in France?

Re : "Shuggie Bain"

There's an interview with Douglas Stuart on YouTube where he says that when discussing the American release of the book he was prepared that the editor might suggest some language changes. But apparently the editor said to him "The readers can use just Google if there is something that they don't understand" !

He also says how he was stunned that he got so many messages from people from all over the States saying "That is my life in your book". A dreadful tale in so many ways but sadly one with universal themes.

Big Thief - Certainty

It's them again. Looking at recent live videos from the States there's a big country vibe going on. Just hope they make it to Europe next year as planned.

Hey Rob, That is awesome that you are going to Pitchfork! I'm trying to see if I can make it to Shaky Knees next month. Are you going to Pitchfork for multiple days?

If you happen to see Phoebe Bridgers or Black Midi, could you post your thoughts on them? I'm really curious (particularly about Black Midi.)

Radiohead - If You Say The Word https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj2nX2BD TYY A fairly lovely rock/pop song with a touch of electronic treatment. It's an outtake from either Kid A or Amnesiac. I can see why it was left off whichever album, though.

Hey, Austin: I did go all three days. Black Midi was terrific - they tore it up pretty good and the crowd really dug it. But Phoebe Bridgers was something else. I didn't really expect much - she seemed a bit on the mild side for a headliner. But she was delightful and seemed to have a blast. It's weird to see someone whose songs can be a bit morose and moody smile through her entire set. She was helped out, no doubt, by the Beatles-like screaming her performance elicited from the young women in the audience. I really enjoyed that set. Although, being an old punk, no one surpassed Kim Gordon, who was fierce and cool as hell and seemed to mystify many in the audience.

Weird story: On Friday, I wore my t-shirt that simply reads (cryptically) "Robert/Grant/Lindy/Robert/Amanda." Backstage, I run into this guy who has on the same "Hammer the Hammer" t-shirt I bought long ago from the Go-Betweens online story. What?? I stopped him, of course, we compared t-shirts, and we talked for about 20 minutes. Super nice guy and a big GBs fan, obviously. It was a highlight of my weekend.

Hi Rob, Thanks so much for the Pitchfork report, and the Phoebe show description. I was on the fence about going to see her tomorrow in Detroit, but I think I'll go now. Always fun to see a (relative) newcomer basking in the glow of an hyper-enthusiastic crowd. (Hopefully the same Beatles-esque thing happens in Detroit, and I think it will, based on the social media that I dipped my toe in.) Great story about your GB's shirt. I think my "People Say" T-shirt might be lost on tomorrow night's Phoebe crowd, so I'll leave it at home....

It sounds good Hugh. This band sure seems to be a very promising one. It's interesting that they chose such a barren looking backdrop for the film. I wouldn't expect much of that in Canada. Maybe Austin or Rob can tell us? Otherwise perhaps it's a subtle nod to Oz which seems to me to be their source of musical inspiration.

Youtube pitched up this live-in-studio performance next:

Randy, The band are signed to Carpark Records who are based in Washington D.C. and the Director of the latest video is Ambar Navarro who as far as I can tell resides in Los Angeles so I am guessing it was perhaps filmed outside Canada. They are booked to play the Broadcast, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, on Monday 28th February, 2022.

The Bats - North By North

Live performance in Auckland Town Hall in July, 2021, at the 40th Anniversary of Flying Nun Records. I have had the pleasure of seeing this band play live in Glasgow twice. Once in the 1980s and again a few years ago and they were superb on both occasions.

The Moon Festival - Acid Tongue. The guitar line is so close to North By North by The Bats that the former must have been aware of the latter. I can't find it online, so you'll just have to imagine it.

Stuart, the Palatine track appealed. They make me think of a French Antony & the Johnstons which (for me) means a better Antony & the Johnstons even if I still will only have a limited appetite for falsetto. I just ordered a copy of a 2016 EP.

The Palatine guitars and harmonies jumped fresh & bright out of the radio at me, Randy They’re French Canadian, I think, and it has something of that McGarrigles sound, the folk round or rondel or whatever it might be. Nice, anyway.
