Abba - Voyage. It's still Thursday in much of the world, but it's Friday in Australia so the album is out and I'm streaming it right now in hi-def.

The Chills - Soft Bomb. It sounds as fresh now as it did on its release 29 years ago.

Broken Chanter - Catastrophe Hits

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHkTl5WO djY

Broken Chanter is David McGregor and friends. McGregor is also a member of Kid Canaveral who appear to be on hiatus. The band's debut album ( Broken Chanter ) was released in 2019.

Barbara Carlotti - Corse Île D'Amour

The first song is the only one written by Carlotti. I wonder why. It's the most interesting. The rest of the album is pleasant but the lack of more Carlotti songs really matters. Her cover of "A Strada Di L'Omu"--a 1978 Italian rewrite of Merle Travis' "Dark As a Dungeon"--is undoubtedly the most interesting of the rest of the songs. Bizarrely, Travis is not credited as writer of the music. For me the album is a disappointment.

Correction. "A Strada Di L'Omu" is in Corsican, not Italian! Sorry Stuart. I suppose the title of the album should have been the tip-off. All the words ending in "u" made me look again.

David McComb - Love Of Will. There is now a hi-def version of it on Amazon streaming. It sounds fantastic. I have a pretty good set up for streaming, but I think it would sound very good on a basic set up too. I’m hearing details I’d never noticed so clearly before, or at all in some cases. And I have the album on CD. I can only hope there is a remastered CD version some day.

I notice, Randy, that elsewhere credit for the tune is given to a Corsican composer, JP.Poletti, which seems a bit cheeky! There is some retouching of the original melody, but overall it's the same, isn't it? I don't know Corsican at all, I lived in northern Sardinia for a year and stupidly never found the time to make the short trip across to the other island. Listening to the song, though, it's pretty comprehensible to an Italian. Corsica was under Genoan rule for about 600 years, until they got sick of rebellions and sold it on to the French, just a year before the birth of its most famous citizen! I wonder where he would have ended up had the island remained "Italian"? The Risorgimento might have been brought forward by about 50 years!

Stuart, the original Corsican language version properly credits the song to Poletti and Travis. Here it is, from 1978:

It's rather pretty.

Considering the consequences if Buonaparte had been born into a Genoan Corsica makes the head explode.

Mi Pequeña Muerte - Cazador

After a somewhat tentative first album ("Hospital"), in 2007 Mi Pequeña Muerte blossomed on "Cazador." Think of a Spanish language marriage of "Seance" era Church, Flying Nun and 60s British aesthetics. A band with two brothers, the two others filling out the ranks include talented Argentine producer Norman Mac Loughlin. Singer and songwriter Julián Perla has assisted on the records of other like-minded Argentinians and partnered with 90s art-rocker Rosario Blefari on the elegiac "Los Mundo Posibles," her last record released before she died from leukemia.

Stars of Heaven - Speak slowly

All these years, I heedlessly thought SoH only released one album! So this was a sweet discovery a few days ago. Some typically beautiful songs, especially towards the end, and lean, lucid guitar playing.

So we are back online! I went into withdrawal seizures. Stuart, if you haven't check my link to the "original" 1978 version of "A Strada Di L'Omu." The beautiful vocals seem very much your thing.

Stuart, how apposite. My mate Paul has just made a podcast about The Stars Of Heaven's albums and interviewed Stan Erraught (the lead guitarist and a top bloke) on it. https://www.paulmcdermott.ie/podcast

Randy,

I cracked in the end and sent a message to Jonathan (admin) who replied

"OK, it looks like things are working again with the message board. The hosting company had updated some of the software at their end, which meant that some of the older code used for the message board would no longer work. Fixed now!

Thanks again for getting in touch about it."

Currently listening to another new Big Thief track. What a very strange and wonderful group they are.

Godawful weather here over the weekend, so a lot of radio listening. Fortunately, France’s radio FIP seems to shift up a gear for Saturday afternoons and rolls out its best stuff until that chilling 7.00 pm moment when what I think is a Kerouac quote introduces “jazz hour”. Brrrrr. Anyway, a bit of random cherry picking:

Big Thief - Sparrow
Andrew’s favourite group of the moment, with Lenker on a roll these days and a double album in the offing! This is an insidious ouroboros of a song, compelling, slightly irritating.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBc-yGE7 IkU

Nick Cave – Vortex
Who’s this? Oh, Nick! Powerful as ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY54Svcs 1og

Palatine – Jane Jane
Wait, I know this voice…oh, it’s them again! Impressive.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9p4fyzd 1m4

Gigolo Aunts - Where I Find My Heaven
Like the Plimsolls fronted by CS & N. Exhilarating.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXchhEOB JXo

T. Rex - Mambo Sun
Classic MB. Nostalgia for a time I loathed, when I should of course have loved, the slithery blighter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ft-1lQVS x-Y

Juniore - Ah bah d'accord
More retro fun.
