Abba - When You Danced With Me. There's a real Irish/Scottish feel to this. Maybe more Scottish than Irish. A Celtic vibe, if you will.

Ghostly kisses - J'ai demande a la lune

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsc-XsSV qWY

The first, and best song, on this live set, and the only one unfortunately sung in French. Written, a bit to my surprise, by Mickaël Furnon of the excellent Mickey 3D. Margaux Sauvé has a lush, low voice that is a pleasure to listen to.

Bran Van 3000 - Drinking in L.A.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQsQZvsR _QI

Ha, I thought this was brand new, that’s what comes of not listening to the radio for about 30 years, a big hit in the late 90s it seems. A rich stew – is the guitar riff a sample or original? That and the beat really suck you in and the lazy, sad chorus seals the deal.

Stuart, I’ve loved that since it came out. Hard to believe it’s almost a quarter century old.

SOTD is Weightless And Wild by Jack Frost. It popped up when I asked my smart speaker to play music by Grant McLennan. Weightless And Wild is, of course, sung by Steve Kilbey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E_yks1U -50

McCoy Tyner – View From The Hill

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsZ26V1y YTQ

It was probably Andrew here who posted the thrilling live version of African Village some years back that introduced me to Tyner. I don’t listen to a lot of jazz and anything that features scat singing can induce a form of violent apoplexy but this is just beautiful, lyrical piano playing whatever the genre.

Stuart,

"African Village" doesn't ring any bells, but I'll have to take a look.

The Go! Team – The Wrath of Marcie

Reading up on the Kitchen Sink movement for a lesson (and discovering to my surprise that Nell Dunn was born into the aristocracy), what better accompaniment than some kitchen sink music?

Glenn Mercer - Days to Come

Not a bad solo album (2007) from The Feelies co-leader. Something about their sound (the double guitars and extra percussion) that I have always loved.

Dean Jones & Susan Browning – Barcelona

RIP, the great Mr Sondheim. Probably I’d heard Send in the clowns a zillion times previously thanks to Judy Collins, but it was this funny and beautiful little mini-drama that got me buying his original soundtracks. This version taken from a fascinating documentary, not so much “putting on a show” as “getting the damn recording done” but with that same sense of wonderful theatrical tension.

Nice one, Fred! To paraphrase a critic on Fleming’s Dr No, “[It] appealed to all my jangliest instincts and appealed to them successfully.” Sounds like one to buy.

Bertrand Belin – Sous les lilas

Stupendously minimalist track from the deepest voice in European music.
