Adwaith – Eto

Stand-out Sunday morning radio song: had me scratching my head over the language till I realised the programme was coming from Cardiff…

Ok, Stuart, that one is right up my alley. Welsh language indie pop! It sounds vaguely like something I'd expect from one of the Baltic countries. It's lovely. Copy ordered from Libertino Records' website who have a simple and functional Paypal link. There're a lot of other Welsh or Gaelic titles in their catalog. They don't bother with bandcamp and the one copy available from a seller on Discogs is overpriced.

Yeah, it's a good sound. Hope to get the album.

meanwhile,

Celest – Andar

My favourite tune from this Mexican bunch that’s not included in the session posted in the Watching thread.

Let Me Go – Erik Truffaz & Sophie Hunger

This is the kind of intro that will always perk me up, a neat drum pattern and some soft organ chords. All you need really. Sophie’s lyrics sound like they were made up on the spot but her cool voice is a good fit on top there. Something very Mike Scott about her phrasing.

We Have Met Before - The Gutter Twins. It took me a couple of listens to realize what this song was really about, which is obvious now.

I read in the interview recently that Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli first bonded (among other interests) over their shared Catholic childhoods.

Celest – Hasta Que El Tiempo No Nos Separe

The song I keep coming back to these days from this gleeful young Mexican band. The three-part chorus harmonies are stuck firmly in my head.

Laurent Bardainne & Tigre d'Eau Douce & Bertrand Belin – Oiseau

A “bel hommage à Bashung et Manset en même temps” says one commentator, who I’m happy to believe, with Belin providing his best Bashung impersonation, including the “cui-cui-cui-cui-cui-cui” bits which echo an AB song I can’t quite put my finger on.

The Roches – Losing true

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MtQscjl ciI

That quirky side to the sisters put me off back when I used to hear them on the radio, so I missed out on radiantly soul-stripping stuff like this. With the Hammond Song, Pretty and high etc, enough to promptly order the compilation of Maggie Roche songs issued after her death in 2017.

Produced by Robert Fripp. Stuart, a good friend of mine was a big Roches fan back in those days though I don't think I ever heard this so maybe it was all before this album. I heard the more typically "quirky" stuff done by them which I slagged off as novelty music and tuned them out. It does make sense that they would move beyond the early approach.

All three sisters wrote but Margaret ( Maggie ) was the strongest songwriter in my humble opinion.

The quirky side of their output certainly put people off but there is a lot to like in their back catalogue. 'Can We Go Home Now' and 'Winter Coat' from one of their later albums are absolutely gorgeous. The harmonies are exquisite.

"The fit is generous and loose
The coat is filled with down of goose
Should I feel guilty about that?
I wouldn't wear the fur of a cat."

The harmonies are killer, Hugh. I think Bach would have been proud of some of their stuff! What I used to hear as off-key is probably just some chord I wasn't used to; either that, or serendipity. So the quirky stuff and the more heart-wrenching material actually went hand-in-hand, it turns out, with Maggie, as you say, more responsible for the latter. Fripp, according to my Italian dictionaries of rock & pop, produced their two finest albums. I look forward to further exploration.

Well, that’s rich, after months of deviously proposing great RF solo stuff for a radio sort-of competition, it’s this Roches track that actually gets me on air… so, instead of mature, considered reflection on one of my favourite songwriters, it’s all a bit of babble about a band I know hardly anything about. Sorry, Robert. I’ll try again in about a year.

Not quite sure everything is fine at the moment, but it's a great song.

Thanks for that Simon! That's a big arrangement for a live show.

No, everything's not really fine right now but somehow music people get on. It was probably not the smartest thing I've done but I ordered a new CD from a Russian label in St. Petersburg as Russian tanks were busily creating their own traffic jam on a highway in Ukraine. It was duly dispatched and I received email confirmation of the same. But seriously, I didn't expect to ever see it. Yesterday it arrived at my house. It took over a month to thread its way through the obstacles and maybe my name is now on a U.S. Government list of uncooperative sorts, but here it is.

I'm as horrified and depressed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine as anyone else here in the U.S. but somehow I can't quite believe that music people are part of it. I can't believe that a little weedy indie band in St. Petersburg who do their songs in English are in favor of their country's invasion or share Putin's persecution complex. I look at music as a sort of esperanto that weaves a parallel universe, a continual reminder that there are human beings on both sides of any fence.

Rewind ( Translation ) - Super Mario ( Translation )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN-Pbi-O B-w

Opening track from the band's third album ( translates as The Beginning Of A Wonderful Friendship ) which was released late last year.

The board is not set up for the Russian language hence the translation.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You into the Dark

Italian radio seems to be playing this song a lot these days, a weird choice unless it’s been on some TV thing (quick check: yes, most recently the Gervais death series, but several others, plus innumerable covers. Also DCFC’s biggest selling single). But my wife had never heard it before and had to pull the car over to listen to it through. “What a lovely song.” We sat a bit and looked at the fields around us riotous with wild flowers. Maybe not so weird then, considering these pressing times. Checking the lyrics, I was a bit disappointed to see it was “Calgary” and not “Calvary” as I’d always heard it.

The Chesterfields - Ask Johnny Dee

Three minutes (bar three seconds) of pure pop perfection from a band I saw on a number of occasions back in the 1980s, when all was well in the world. (Or at least in my world.)

I love this song, and though I hope to live forever, this is the song I want played at my funeral.
