The Bathers -- Summer Lightning

If I understand this correctly, Chris Thomson re-recorded the bulk of the first Bathers album and included a handful of additional songs written during the same general period. While it's lovely to hear Thomson revisit the old songs, for me the highlight is the title song.

Hugh, musically they sound like a Spanish answer to the Soft-Hearted Scientists. Purchased, plus the 9 CD package.

Randy, Be sure to check out Caballero Reynaldo which is the pseudonym of Luis Miguel Gonzalez Martinez who was a member of Los Visionarios. Spanish composer, musician, producer and the head of Hall Of Fame Records who released the Los Visionarios titles. He has released 12 albums of original songs plus another 24 albums of cover versions by artists such as The Beatles, Depeche Mode, King Crimson, Malcolm Scarpa, Motorhead, Prince, Yes and Frank Zappa. Some of his cover versions are fabulous.

Hugh, I can't see myself piling up 24 collections of cover versions even if they are clever. For other readers, Hugh's links in the post above correspond to covers of King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Beatles and Yes respectively. So maybe something in there for Stuart and Pádraig?

Randy, I've only ever heard one Zappa album, some best of. It wasn't enough to make me get any more of his, though it was OK. King Crimson are a band I somehow managed to hear little, possibly nothing, of until a few years ago. I liked what I heard and will eventually get some more. There's an awful lot of it, though. With The Beatles and Yes, I'm pretty sure any covers aren't going to be a patch on the originals. Might have a listen though, out of curiosity.

When the writer of a favourite classic pop ditty like “Faron Young” was reported as experimenting with 20 minute electronic suites incorporating spoken word phrases recorded from the internet and a hotel room commentary provided by a commodities broker, I admit my attention wandered, not helped by the album title, “I trawl the megahertz”. But the radio yesterday provided a rewarding focus on the work, with thoughtful, interesting reflections from Paddy McAloon himself and a selection of music which turned out to be intriguingly lovely. Reviews at the time were, of course, almost overwhelmingly positive, with terms like “powerful” and “masterpiece” being thrown around (later on, “lost masterpiece”). So, time to engage my attention, finally.

Stuart, I’m one of those who bought that album on release 19 years and four days ago. I loved it straight away. It’s astonishing.

Good for you, Pádraig. I am always a Johnny come lately to these things. Didn’t Pete Astor go down a similar path? But when you’ve done Almost Prayed and Faron Young, I guess that’s the box I want to keep you in. Of course, had it been said that Vangelis, god bless him, was going to do something of the sort, I wouldn’t have thought twice. Anyway, Megahertz is winging its way towards me, I’ll be interested to hear it all.

Cheers for that link Stuart ! Great to find out a little more about "I Trawl The Megahertz". I've always loved that record. It's one to sit and listen to, from beginning to end. To immerse oneself in. Like a good film.
