Flopa - Emoción Homicida In the parallel universe that is "the other Australia"--I mean Argentina--I keep finding new layers. So, of course, among all the indie-poppers and the neo-psychedelics and the Flying Nun fans and the death metal freaks (!) there would also be a few singer/songwriter types. Flopa--Florencia Listani--looks so far to be one of the best. Were she singing in English she could easily be a Roseanne Cash acolyte and she may be anyway. The difference is that she came up in the scrappy Argentine university music scene. My anglophone handicap leaves me hopelessly short of information so I must extrapolate from the sound itself. "Emoción Homicida" was her second solo album after she'd first come on the scene in a collaboration with two male folk & rock figures each of whom would also leave their marks on the Argentine music scene on each side of Flopa's own musical epicenter. This album is very much of a piece from start to end, a quality work with measured arrangements and delivery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2Zd0Ggs XaM&list=OLAK5uy_kcd7Qo_AVdtn52r4MJ7ARpz w6PRScnSRE&index=2 |

I played this blind to the wife, Randy, just to check… “It’s Carmen Consoli!” she said immediately, “but… singing in Spanish?” Very similar, I must admit, in phrasing, though Carmen has the more mannered voice. I suspect María Florencia might be a fan! Two of my favourites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuJjOzGI sv0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXLZL8p3 fzk |

Stuart, the vocal timbre is strikingly similar with perhaps Signora Consoli a slight bit more warbly. I could only listen to your second example as the first was declared inaccessible in my territory. Music style is completely different so I wonder about the fandom. Surely a person cannot successfully imitate another singer's timbre? The Argentines are definitely aware of sounds in other places though. Much like Oz, they're so far away and their market is so modest in size that they must create their own music rather than forever wait in vain for overseas heroes to visit. And my next exhibit to prove that very point comes from today's entry for this thread. It dropped through the mail slot yesterday, the middle album by an Argentino so besotted with contemporary French chanson that even his Spanish language records sound French. With the glorious immigrant name of Pablo Krantz, he records in French on some albums and in Spanish on others. On the strength of my youtube sampling I'm trying to gather together his entire recorded output. This first full-album listen reinforces my enthusiasm.
