RIP Irene Papas. First heard, rather inevitably, on her famous track “Infinity” on 666, as terrifying a performance as any shy virginal Scots boy would rather not have borne witness too, and, since our record player was in the living room, something that required a bit of fleet-footedness to whip up the needle if any family were around. Then, arriving here, I was delighted to discover that my local record store owner was a soundtrack collector who had everything Vangelis had ever done, including his two discs with Irene, at that time almost impossible to find. She seems to have made only 3 actual albums, a waste of a remarkable voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckgVnp4M 94k |

David Westlake - My Beautiful England I am happy that there is a new David Westlake release, but I am not too sure about the lyrical content of the new album, which is an updating of the Village Green Preservation Society. I always saw irony in the lyrics of that Kinks album anyway. |

Interesting news, Fred. I was kind of underwhelmed by his album "Play Dusty For Me." I hope this one is better. I will go visit bandcamp and investigate. Westlake could do worse than trace Mr. Davies' footsteps. Considering lyrics to some of his old songs like "The Word Around Town" the absence of irony is a bit surprising. Stuart, I have the Kiwis album but like nearly everything I get nowadays I listen to it 2 or 3 times and then upload it and after that mostly only hear a song here and there as it comes up on the iPod in shuffle play mode. I knew that the Kiwis--as tipped by their name--drew inspiration from the NZ classics but I had totally forgotten that there was anything like "Un salto en el corazon." It popped up when I was in the car driving somewhere and I could not for the life of me guess who is was. |

The Beths - When You Know You Know https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNncQO5h KXA One of a multitude of bangers on the band's terrific new album Expert in Dying Field. Liz Stokes is a one-person earworm factory. |

An Iranian girl sings “Bella Ciao”. Always a rousing song but here, in this powerful, crystal clear voice, absolutely heartbreaking. https://www.ilpost.it/flashes/iran-prote ste-bella-ciao/?utm_medium=social&utm_so urce=facebook&utm_campaign=lancio&fbclid =IwAR3NoXn5FZvVHBS4QtKAut0_Oa4RWmWKGw--i s5GiqVVmuOdZorJFjsC6Hk |
