The Clean - Beatnik. I have always loved this song and the corresponding video. RIP Hamish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol3JHWlS Rzc |

Thanks for that Fred. Like with so many things I was late to the Flying Nun discovery. If I'm not mistaken the first thing I got by The Clean was the 2002 Anthology collection when it was a new release. What amazed me was how they could make the simplest things totally fresh. In this respect they were like the Velvets at their best moments except The Clean were even better at this alchemistry than the Velvets. While I hated the Velvets' paunchy "Sweet Jane" from first listen, I loved most of the three-chord wonders by The Clean. Such as this . . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhnPiSgD 4T0&list=OLAK5uy_kZiLV1NxJ83VG-TX8yDIJEV r_RYv8qGvE&index=27 It was a Clean thing and also a Bats thing but then of course the Bats were an outgrowth of The Clean. Hamish' Mo Tuckeresque drums were a crucial element to this concoction. He must have worked out that Mo was in fact the best musician in the Velvets. He always did exactly the right thing, again usually with less than would seem possible. He was a drum machine that no drum machine could match. And The Clean's influence extended far and wide continuing to this day. One of the reasons I've fallen so hard for many Argentine and Spanish records of our current century is because of their frank and enthusiastic debt to The Clean. |

Excellent stuff, Mr Kerr. The French Fabrique de Chanteuses still working well, it seems. Maybe at some point you could howl out at DomA something like, "Play Rome, you bald coot! Or at least Milan!" in your best Angry Scot accent? Have a great evening! |

Cheers Stuart ! I've grown to like the last Dominque A album, and suspect tonight will not be too "rockist" For a start it's in an all seated hall, half the size of where he plays normally in Bordeaux with his band. And yes where do they all come from, these young talented chanteuses ? |

Went on a bit of a Lonny binge on Utube. Great voice, splendid intensity, nice cat. No CD though, as far as I can see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69Io1kmE MpQ |

Cheers Randy ! Ordered too. What was quite interesting on Friday evening was that Lonny's last song was in English. And it was like hearing another singer ! Her voice seemed much deeper. I take the mickey out of my 23 (year old) daughter saying she sounds like a wee girl when she speaks in English, but maybe there is something in it ? Another personality with another langauge ? |

Certainly another tonality, Andrew! I've noticed it a lot over the years with students - in my own case, my Italian is a higher pitch than my English. I don't know what it depends on, though. |

First Aid Kit's cover version of the Hounds of Love. Sublime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FW3Zu9I YfM I've got a thing recently for cover versions, both good cover versions and those that are that much better than the originals, such as Bette Davis Eyes... |

Gosh my Lonny CD turned up in just 2 days. And with a lovely card, handwritten "Belle Ecoute" with a little heart, signed Lonny. And 2 little stickers. That's what I call attention to detail. Song of the Day has to be another of her's "Le goût de l'orge" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNGlymE- meU |

After Hamish Kilgour's unexpected passing I wrote something about one of the things that attracted me to some of the Argentine musicians was their debt to The Clean. Today my iPod tossed up this fine exhibit by Los Subterraneos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmuHv_vC n98 |
