One of my favourite lines in a song, "It took me four days to hitch-hike from Saginaw", probably because of that stupendous melodic lift it gets. I thought the town was maybe chosen just to scan, but no, Paul was actually there to play before hitching off to meet Kathy and perform the rest of the song. Finally got around to googling the place, I was curious to see that Theodore Roethke was born there, a poet I’ve never particularly liked, but his song describing his hometown is funny, detailed and vulgar. “In Saginaw, in Saginaw, The wind blows up your feet, When the ladies' guild puts on a feed, There's beans on every plate, And if you eat more than you should, Destruction is complete.
