Roger Daltrey – Giving It All Away

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWAsHoDI lGk

Not sure where this chestnut popped out from. A well-crafted song, anyway, not a bad lyric for a young songwriter hustling for work, though I’ve never read anything about what inspired it. A strange, weirdly prescient lyric, in retrospect, since Leo Sayer, in his early 20s, was indeed a young boy and, through the (apparently) inept investments of his manager Adam Faith (who grew up in the same street as Daltrey), also “giving it all away”, as his vast earnings from a number of hit singles and albums vanished into the financial void. “Worked hard and failed…” indeed. Then married an Italian, headed off to Australia and “toured his way back to financial security”.

The Cat's Miaow - "Not Like I Was Doing Anything"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2r4nN9v g-I

Not a huge fan of all that C86 scene and this Australian 90s band were clearly influenced by that. But it has a little something more ? In this technological age my son bought me a present. I had a mail saying I had an album to download on Bandcamp.Nothing to unwrap :-( but still kind of him !

Andrew, The majority of the band's output was released on two albums ( A Kiss And A Cuddle; Songs For Girls To Sing ) by Library Records, Brunswick, Australia, in 2003 ( 78 tracks in total.) The label was owned by Bart Cummings who was a member of the band along with Andrew Withycombe, Cameron Smith and Kerrie Bolton. The four of them were also members of Hydroplane.

The Go-Betweens - I Just Get Caught Out

The version on the Sounds Showcase EP, which I bought in London about a million years ago. It's one of my favourite GBs' songs and I love this version.

The Rosenbergs - Leech

Can't find a link for it. You'll just have to trust me that it's a great song.

Annual Leaf - Fade to Zomp

This band is now in Melbourne but they've apparently been a lot of other places as far flung as London and Seoul after starting in Christchurch, NZ. I've raved about them before and here I am again.

Money Mark – Tomorrow will be like today

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM7HD0Kd f-E

Bit of a rip-roaring homage to early Elvis C or Graham P, perhaps, with some thrilling throat-grabbing keyboard work. Highly stimulating.

Robbie Robertson - Testimony (Unity Mix). RIP to a man who played a huge part in my musical education in the 1980s.

The Band - "It Makes No Difference" from "The Last Waltz"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfBqWNFO Vo8

Robertson's lyrics and the voice of an angel in Danko's.

The film was shown on release in Glasgow at a late night showing in '79. It finished too late to get back to the suburbs with public transport, so I persuaded my mum to drive us. She developed a huge crush on Robertson :-)

PALATINE – La Sentinelle Amadouée

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKf3OaP8 r3E

They had some nice songs out a few years back, now there’s a new album, as melodic and listenable as before.

Thank you Stuart! Copy of the CD ordered via Bandcamp. The previous Palatine album and "Baton Rouge" EP have worn very well for me.

More rampaging Hammond in this Billie Childish project, here roping in James Taylor.

Wow, but where did this leap out from? And who does her voice remind me of? Great sharp, poetic lyrics. Immediately convincing.

Hoyt Axton – Kingswood Manor

Not the yee-haw country I was expecting, rather a slightly eerie & psychedelic anti-drug song.

Teenage Fanclub – Foreign Land

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikCMuSHs qOU

I’m not a big TF fan really, but this is a rich listen. And videod in Hamilton Mausoleum, in Lanark, not so far from the home of my old man’s mud-begotten Hamilton ancestors…! (bit of bastardy involved there, but, as the kindly custodian in the Scottish Records Office once informed me, “Ohhh, but it was all quite common back then, y’ken…”)
