Stardust Five - Stardust Five. A 2005 album of surf rock and rock ‘n’ roll that I got in some bargain bin recently. It escaped my attention at the time of its release, which makes me wonder if it didn’t get much of a push. It should have, given the band is Paul Kelly, Dan Kelly, Dan Luscombe, Peter Luscombe and Bill McDonald and the album was mixed by Tchad Blake. Not a lost classic by any stretch, but definitely a lost and interesting Paul Kelly and Australian rock curio. | ||

Don & Francoiz - Cover Songs in Inferno I'm not a great fan of cover versions except in the extremely rare event somebody totally reinvents the songs. But I have a great weakness for Francoiz Breut and about half of the songs on here are interesting choices. She's often tossed a cover onto her albums anyway. The backing is built up by Don Nińo while the songs were chosen by Francoiz. I didn't need a cover of "Morning Dew" or "Season of the Witch" and while I think "White Rabbit" suits Francoiz' typically understated delivery, a more interesting choice would have better suited the listener in me. But I love her cover of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan"--say what?--and the overlooked Felt song "My Face is on Fire" and Shocking Blue's "Demon Lover" are delights that fit her perfectly. Her surprising choice of Ray Davies' "Shangri-la" almost entirely works. If only she and Nińo hadn't retained the terrible second bridge "oh Shangri-la, Shangri-la la la la la, la la la la laaa, etc" from the original. It was always bad and it still is, detracting from the mood of the song. The lyrics of this song were about the British version of what the U.S. media dubbed "The Greatest Generation" but over a half century on they fit my own baby boom generation every bit as well. | ||

Bob Dylan - Masterpieces, a triple album that was released only in Australia, New Zealande and Japan in 1978. It goes for fairly big bucks these days, but I got it for a reasonable price in Real Groovy in Auckland recently. I saw on their website that they had it and I went from the airport to my hotel, dropped my bags off and went straight down to Real Groovy to get it. I was going to NZ anyway, btw, I didn’t fly there just to buy Masterpieces. The Chills - Brave Words (expanded and remastered). The remaster we’ve been waiting decades for. There is still some occasional harshness, most noticeable on the ch sounds in Wet Blanket and the sh sounds on Creep, but mostly it sounds great, so much better than it ever has. The garage elements sound more garagey, the baroque parts sound more baroquey. The remastering is sensitive to the source material and never makes it sound sterile or neutered. This is almost certainly as good as it’s ever going to sound. | ||

No Mono - Islands Part 1. This is an incredible album by Tom Iansek (Big Scary, # 1 Dads) and the extraordinary voice that is Tom Snowdon. It came out in 2018, but I only bought it yesterday and I’m on the first play right now. Their Bandcamp description just says alternative, Melbourne. The geographic location is correct, but alternative makes it sound like they’re some three chord indie guitar band. They’re nothing of the sort. Looking forward to that, Hugh. Meanwhile I'm listening to . . . The Silent Boys - Tilt-a-Whirl This unusual band hails from Virginia. Some of you probably know that I don't champion U.S. artists very often. The Silent Boys' influences are U.K. based rather than the perhaps more expected U.S. folk or country-esque sound you'd anticipate from someone from Virginia. The constant is Wallace Dietz who started making recordings in the 1980s. Some individual tracks were individually released here and there on compilations. He then revived the band in 1999 and they've been ongoing since then. I'm still digesting their catalog. This is their second-to-newest album, dating from 2020. Sounds Like Sunset - Saturdays. I have no idea where this came from, but it’s a promo copy. I put it into the CD player and, making the mistake of judging the CD by the cover, expected to hear some kind of electronica. So the wall of sound guitars, a cross between Neil Young and My Bloody Valentine, was a bit of a shock. A quick google reveals it’s a Sydney band, the album was released in 2001 and the singer/guitarist/co-founder dropped dead while out for a run last January. I must have got it in a second hand or charity shop at some point. Further into the album, it’s much more MBV than Crazy Horse, and it’s very good. | ||

Maybe Randy you know a lot more about them. Sounds like Gene singing on wonderful song Dangerous Games. Also the songs My Marie & Washington Square are striking & sound like Gene singing. David! I haven't heard of that CD! I have "Under the Silvery Moon" which includes songs like "Dangerous Games" and "My Marie" but NOT "Washington Square." As Hugh's link explains, Gene worked with Pat Robinson at the time. The entertaining thing is that John York--in one of the later lineups of the Byrds--and Rick Danko show up on some of the recordings along with the ubiquitous Nicky Hopkins. One of the things I like about some of the Pat Robinson era recordings is the fact Robinson himself obviously loved the big Gene Clark opuses, like "Echoes" and "From a Silver Phial," so he tried to create big elaborate poetic productions using synths where he might have employed fancier expensive musicians if the money had been available. It takes one to know one. I've always had a special love for the gigantic poetic Gene Clark productions so I picked up on Robinson's tilt right away. Much of Clark's work at the time was geared more toward traditional country. Your post reminds me that there was at least one other Gene Clark compilation released that included some other CRY tracks, possibly including "Washington Square." My brother has it and I distinctly remember there being some good tracks that I don't have. Perhaps it was a more honestly badged version of your same collection. Some of the weird unofficial releases of late Gene Clark material would just pop up in a store's rack somewhere and then you'd never see another one. I should hunt for my brother's oddity and for your "Byrds" set. | ||

David, thank you for providing the title of the compilation. It turns out that it was released in Europe and Discogs has a bunch of available copies. I've ordered one. On the other hand, the compilation that my brother has is not listed on Discogs. I'm going to have to remember to take my ancient laptop up to his place next time I visit and upload the music (if any of it is additional to what is here or on "Under the Silvery Moon"). "Mary Sue" is a Gene Clark song and is probably sung by him on your disc. Clark sings on the version on "Under the Silvery Moon." David / Randy, I managed to source a very cheap copy of 'Most Famous Hits' from an Ebay seller. Cardboard box a bit battered and torn but the discs themselves are in pristine condition. My box consists of two jewel cases containing Discs One and Two. No booklet and no information regarding the musicians / recordings on the single sheet inserts. Disc One tracklist :- 1. Mr. Tambourine Man 2. Home Again 3. All I Really Want To Do 4. Do You Remember 5. Turn Turn Turn 6. Tell Sarah Jane 7. He Was A Friend Of Mine 8. Out Of Sight 9. Eight Miles High 10. Time And Place 11. You Ain't Going Nowhere 12. Quit This 13. It Won't Be Wrong 14. Quicksand 15. Tell It Like It Is 16. As If We Didn't Know 17. The Panther 18. Dragons Eye Track 7 is listed as 'He Was A Friend Of Mine.' The song that plays is 'Chestnut Mare.'!!! According to one reviewer on Discogs the Byrds songs on Disc One were recorded by a covers band. If true this may explain this comment from the earlier article :- 'I don’t have enough information to understand why some CRY tracks are transcendental and other take-or-leave. Something to do with differences between recording sessions/leadership?' | ||

If some of the recordings are by a totally unrelated band it sounds like things will be a bit of a mess. Still, there will be things worth having. Randy, I found a list of CRY recordings on the following forum ( scroll down ) https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/g ene-clark-sacd-of-unreleased-recordings. 429086/page-37 All of the above tracks feature on CD1 ( seven songs ) and CD2 ( 18 songs ) of 'Most Famous Hits.' It is possible CRY re-recorded the songs by The Byrds on CD1 but I am not convinced. See what you think when it arrives. I have fired off an e-mail to Wallace as his Bandcamp page is offering to ship the Steam Train Hearts CD to me for Ł3.23. Seems very cheap but the disc comes in a cardboard sleeve so perhaps he can send it via letter mail. | ||

Hugh, I assumed that you already have Steam Train Hearts and the first Grain Hoppers album. I received them as bonus surprises when I ordered the back catalog by The Silent Boys. I might have been the beneficiary of cheaper domestic shipping with a weight limit safely above what I had ordered. They both come in simple sleeves that can undoubtedly fit in a letter envelope. If 25 of the songs on the "Byrds" comp are by CRY I won't be unhappy. Thank you for the information. | ||

Randy, I was unaware of Steam Train Hearts until you posted and only learned of The Grain Hoppers when Wallace replied to my e-mail. I am currently in the process of purchasing all three titles from him. The running order of the Cry recordings on Disc 1 is disappointing ( Tracks 8, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18.) They really should have kept all the songs together. I don't think all 25 recordings will fit on one CDR so I will probably split them across two. Rob Reiner’s Who Killed JFK podcast. He was murdered 60 years ago today. I’ve been fascinated with JFK since I was very young and have read a lot and watched a lot about his life and his assassination over many decades. This podcast - it’s up to the third episode - has told me things I’ve either never heard before, or had long forgotten. Probably a mix of both. My fascination has been rekindled. | ||

I’ve read and listened to various reviews picking faults with what Giles Martin has done with his remastering and, more controversially, remixing. But it sounds great to me. Beirut - Hadsel Some albums just sound as if they’ve been made personally for us, so the idea of an anguished songwriter “at a time of great personal difficulty” fleeing to take refuge in an icy wooden church on a Norwegian island, whose organ becomes the “foundational instrument” (Uncut) for his next sequence of songs, is, well, irresistible, at least to me. Pitchfork goes on to say that “This is an intimate, unflinching album that draws its power from the hostile beauty and long nights of a Norwegian winter and from Condon’s voice, frequently multi-tracked into giant choirs, like a lonely man who has invited his imaginary friends to a party”. Oh, yes please! Only had a quick listen so far, but it might even live up to this enticing prose. I wonder if he’s ever bumped into Colin MacIntyre? Be - There. Very hard to find online due to the anonymity of their name and album title. I came across a review randomly and (eventually) found the album on a streaming service. It’s superb. Definitely one of my favourite albums of the year. It’s heavily influenced by mid to late 60s Beach Boys, Velvet Underground and George Harrison’s Indian-style songs. | ||

A couple days ago I took delivery of the following compilation of an amazing band I'd never heard of: Hangman's Beautiful Daughters - Smashed Full of Wonder They come from the same new psych scene in 80s London that gave us Television Personalities.
