Exsonvaldes - Party People. A new (to me, anyway) French indie pop band, with a cute video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rMbY4N8 XbQ&t=208s

Have any of you Francophiles come across them before?

The House Of Love - I Don't Know Why I Love You (Atlas 7 Inch Drip of Rockman mix). A remix done for the 1999 film Spender, which shortens the original and adds a breakbeat and some extra guitar on the outro. It didn't need a remix, or a breakbeat, or any extra guitar lines, but this is still great.

I can't any video for this version, so you'll have to make do with the original. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpBr24xW 2Q8

Bombay Bicycle Club - Feel. I came across this song just recently. For whatever reason, I dismissed them at the time, but this is great. I will have to investigate more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etmFT1OQ Snc

Pádraig, that song is off the "So Long, See You Tomorrow" album I have on CD. I was only listening to it recently. I bought that album and "A Different Kind Of Fix" and also "Everything Else Has Gone Wrong" in the giant CD sale. I haven't listened to the latter 2 yet but I like So Long, See You Tomorrow album.

While my brother and nephew visited me over the weekend, I rented a larger vehicle than my Fiat 500 to shuttle them around. I plugged in one of my iPods loaded up with a selection of approximately 5,600 songs that come from my larger iPod library. Each meets one of the following standards:
1) It has been added to the library within the past 24 months, OR
2) It has been played only once before, OR
3) It has not been played by any device using the library for at least 8 years.

I then set the iPod to pull from the tracks randomly.

Something about the interface between the rental Nissan and this ancient iPod screwed up the iPod's application of its parameters so as to play ONLY things which hadn't played for 8 years. As we drove around I kept exclaiming "how is it that this stupid thing is only playing ancient music?" Finally, I kept hitting the "next" button nearly screaming "play me something from this fucking century, goddammit!"

This experience certainly served to make me aware of which music has held its charm for me notwithstanding the years. It played me three different songs by the Triffids from their infant years of recording on the McComb family Revox reel to reel and, well, all of them still had the charm of amazingly clever, creative kids making the most of being isolated from the rest of the world in suburban Perth, Western Australia. My song of the day is . . .

Triffids - Careless City

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIjhriZa uSM

It's sung by Alsy MacDonald and I think also written by him.

Even when returned to its normal perch in the Fiat the iPod was still locked into this strange insistence upon playing the oldest songs eligible within its library. Proper function was finally restored after I resynched it with the library's host computer. But the Triffids songs were worth it.

That’s a great story, Randy. I can just picture the scene, with you getting increasingly aggressive with the technology and your brother and nephew wondering what the hell was happening.

Cat Clyde - Everywhere I Go.

It looks as though the video is largely shot on a train from Glasgow Central (aptly) to Euston.

It wasn't quite as bad as that Pádraig. While they were present I just kept saying things like "it's hilarious how this thing seems to be playing anything except what I've added in the past few years." I got quietly annoyed and simply unplugged the thing for the last couple drives I took with them including the ride to the airport. It was finally the next day when I returned the rental car and plugged the iPod into my normal car and it kept doing the same thing that I started pounding the "next" button. The Triffids songs that it deigned to play were "Out of Tune" which is one of the earliest of their recordings from when they were definitely kids, "Careless City" and "Pileup": "there's a six car pileup on Memory Lane . . . ."

My brother and nephew are used to my odd music. They were probably wondering where all the Spanish language stuff had gone.

I always keeps an ear on Burgers' recommendations. If I'm not mistaken he's how I learned about Tompaulin. Ms. Clyde is a bit too much hipster Esperanto for me. I encounter her facsimiles when I walk down the street here.

And I just realised that I posted the wrong link for the United Future Organization - Stolen Moments clip above, instead posting a link to their song My Foolish Dream by mistake. The correct link is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ7MUdLL SNU

Niagara – Pendant que les champs brűlent

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTVvmCAE g3A

Intoxicating French pop hit from 1990 (its “burning fields” lyrics were apparently associated with the Gulf war): a little VU riff, strings, oo-oo back ups and ladled thickly over the whole shebang a languorously diva vocal.

Mitski – Heaven

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zSHu-fY -yM

Already seven albums into a career and apparently world famous with that screaming portion of fan youth who find Lana, Lorde and Phoebe a bit too upbeat. I don’t think I’d ever heard of her till this came on the radio a few days back. Her live performances are wide-ranging, from punky acne-bared solo fury to sophisticated indie angst to flamboyantly choreographed stadium brashness, but I like her most when the poised, lovely voice is pitched against imaginative and unpredictable instrumentation.

Stuart, that's beautifully put. I only came across her (or at least only took notice) with her previous album. I was astonished to see that she'd been around for so long.

Mitski – Geyser

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zdFZJf- B90

In a bit of a Mitski moment these days, and especially absorbed in this very fine song, packing so much into a mere 2 mins 28. The way she modulates her voice through “You're the one I want” (x1) to “You're the one I want” (x2) then suddenly with marvellous glee into “Cause you're the one I got, You're the one I got…”, that gets me every time. This album version doesn’t quite have the punch of her KEXP appearance, but it’s an enjoyably scrappy little video.
