A whole bunch of weather worn, growly men seem to be choking up over this last one. |

A good friend (and former colleague) of mine has accepted an offer for a new job. It is a wonderful opportunity for her with better pay and much better retirement benefits. Naturally she felt a little sad when giving her notice at her current employer from whom she'd learnt so much of her craft and where she has many friends. I sent her this link which is now my song of the day: Herman's Hermits - This Door Swings Both Ways https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87tU5xWZ bTA It was just a cute pop tune when I was 9 or 10 years old. Nowadays it has a little more heft. |

Lindsey Buckingham – Down on Rodeo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwdH-XOt f64 Beautiful song, apparently written for Anne Heche many years before her absurd and untimely death. This rendition has a warm, burnished, acoustic glow lacking in the album version. |

The Lemonheads - Fear Of Living https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1Xi2Cw1 DqY The best Lemonheads song in 27 years. And it's done and dusted in 132 seconds. Perfect. |

Yes, it's got that old Dando skip to it, though his voice has sunk a few notches. Shouldn't it be called "Fear the living" though? Sad to see the co-writer died this year. |

Stuart, I think he’s just singing this one in a lower register. I don’t think it’s a permanent, crack pipe-induced deepening of his voice. At least I hope not, for his sake. I like your description of it having “that old Dando skip to it”. I was thinking something similar, though not those exact words. And yes, it was tragic to read about the co-writer. I’d never heard of him or his band QTY. Another musician to check out, another rabbit hole to go down. |

The Weather Prophets – Almost prayed Always cool when you switch on the radio first thing and it’s one of your all-time favourites. A song that I love all over again every time I hear it and very high up in my top ten “melancholy person being contemplative near a body of water” songs, the only other one so far being Dive for your memory, but I’m sure others will come to mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps6Eiahb LQA&t=25s |

(And I know I'm going for two in one day here, but I failed to post the previous one 40 minutes ago...) On Sunday I went to see the 1961 horror film The Innocents for the first time, and when it finished I thought that Kate Bush's song The Infant Kiss had very strong echoes of it, and I clearly wasn't the only one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUTkdw4C 0XA And I hadn't realised Kate did a French language version of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnR-ifjq n_E I really can't believe I didn't know that existed. Always good to discover new things... |

King Creosote – Walter de la Nightmare More very fine King C, winning the award for best titular use of a neglected Georgian poet. Is he also referenced in the lyrics? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9r1PhRR 0Fw |
