Neil Finn - Alone. Finn doesn’t usually show his Beatles influence so obviously as on this. It’s wonderful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6J0CJ85 N6A |

The Reds, Pinks & Purples -- I Hope I Never Fall in Love. The music of Glenn Donaldson and rotating cast of his band has been pleasing me for a couple years now. He combines something like the voice of Colin Blunstone with the emotional delicacy and complexity of Grant McLennan or Lloyd Cole and the attractive Byrds-inspired jangle of Tom Petty or REM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsK0BjqO H9Q |

Wildly late in life I am reading "Brave New World" for the first time. Yes, I read the usual Orwell tomes long ago when I was a youngun' but for no particular reason I never got around to Huxley's novel. So it is only now that I can appreciate the inspiration for my longtime absolute favorite Buzzcocks song, which is my Song of the Day: Everybody's Happy Nowadays https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvKMv6Sn N-k |

Ed Kuepper - Also Sprach the King of Euro Disco. A live version from a few months ago in Sydney, and I think that's the great Mark Dawson on drums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIH7dZ0C 2L4 I first saw Kuepper on a triple bill with Hunters and Collectors and Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls at the Hordern Pavilion in 1988. After which I saw him at the Kardomah Cafe in Sydney, Moles Club in Bath, UK, the Thekla (Bristol, UK, on the guest list), the Borderline Club (London, on the guest list), Camden... I like a bit of Ed. |

While I had some Saints records from back when they were new or near new releases--my favorite being "Prehistoric"--I didn't come to Ed Kuepper until I found this board. And then, boy did I find him. I started with "Sings His Greatest Hits" and then bought "Character Assassination" as my first proper album of his. And kept going, of course. I particularly enjoy his first two albums, even with the somewhat claustrophia-inducing compressed sound of the multi-tracked "Electrical Storm." Ed could be relied upon to toss off a new classic track again and again as his recorded output continued even on albums that I didn't consider to be among his better ones. So, yes, I like a bit of Ed too. Simon, there's another video from (I think) the same show that runs for 45 minutes, featuring five songs not including "Also Sprach." The uploader identifies the musicians and, yep, it's Mark Dawson on drums. The video includes a stage performance of one of my favorite of his songs, "All of these Things." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkQIxDXs F3Y |

Headless Heroes – The North Wind Blew South https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5mKvL6s x1c Written by the multi-pseudonymous “Philamore Lincoln” (aka Nottingham-born Robert Cromwell Anson/Philip Kinorra/Julian Covey) a rather nice Cocteautwinish thing, sung here by Alela Diane backed by a set of musicians put together by New York producer Eddie Bezalel. So, a lot of names I’ve never heard of, but a very pretty song. |

Simon, that's a coincidence as I was just this moment thinking of Tori Amos as my SOTD reminds me her, in lyrical content, not music style. Emily Wolfe - SIlence https://emilywolfemusic.bandcamp.com/alb um/the-blowback Happy Christmas, everyone. |

And a merry Christmas from a somewhat grey south of England. But this should cheer up anybody: Bob Dyian - Must Be Santa. One of the best Christmas songs... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8qE6WQm Nus |

Nothing about Xmas. Just what I heard tonight that I wanted to post here: Five Year Plan - Brand New Car It was on the band's first release in 1986. I gave up trying to find the song on youtube with the search phrases "Five Year Plan" and "Brand New Car" forever locking me in a doom loop of Soviet nostalgia and automobile ads. Adding "Bristol" got me the right band but the wrong songs as well more focused automotive links concerning the Bristol marque. So here's the bandcamp link from the compilation album: https://thefiveyearplan86.bandcamp.com/t rack/brand-new-car |

Pulp - Death Comes To Town. An obscure song that was recorded in 1989 but wasn’t released until the remastered edition of Separations in 2012. Even Dylan rarely waits that long before finally releasing a hidden gem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLm4fym5 m7s |

The Triffids - Raining Pleasure (introduced by Grant McLennan) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6hPJZah uAI I saw the Triffids at the Paddington RSL on July 1, 1988 and it was quite a quirky setlist, including Into the Groove by Madonna. But with a 25-song set we got our money's worth. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-triff ids/1988/paddington-rsl-sydney-australia -7bcfde48.html On the way home my friend and I stopped at a coffee shop - my friend drank coffee, I had a milkshake - and we put a couple of songs on the juke box. But they had to be okayed first by the 'queen of the juke box', who I guess was a regular there. I chose a couple of my favourites by the Cure - Why Can't I be You? and Let's Go to Bed - which seem quite flirty/disturbing in retrospect and out of context. But it was all very innocent. It was a great night, and a very late one, and oh to be 25 again!! |

The Styrenes - All The Wrong People Are Dying https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_lk9GOb zsI I dedicate this song to an old friend Tony who passed away this year. We bonded in high school over Rock & Roll; his favorite bands at the time were the Kinks and the Ramones and I have fond memories of attending many concerts together (the Ramones, the Replacements, R.E.M, Echo & the Bunnyman, Television, and Bob Dylan). We drifted apart over the years, but it still hurts. I also dedicate it to all the greats who died this year: Tom Verlaine, Mark Stewart, Robbie Robinson, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sinéad, and Shane. To Cormac McCarthy, Milan Kundera, Terence Davies, and all the Jazz legends like Wayne Shorter, Kidd Jordan, Peter Brötzmann, Mars Williams, and Carla Bley. |

Final SOTD for 2023, Olivia Rodrigo - Bad Idea Right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj9qJsJT sjQ This is the first time I’ve ever heard a song by her, as far as I know, but I went looking for it as so many end of year polls have mentioned her. The song is great and the video is very funny. |
