Mainly because it's fantastic!

All the best for 2024, fellow Go-Betweens fans.

The planet may be going to hell in to a handcart, but we'll always have the Go-Betweens!

Talking Heads - Girlfriend is Better from Stop Making Sense.

I went to see the remastered film yesterday, and it's as good as it ever was.

I got a girlfriend with bows in her hair
And nothing is better than that (is it?)

Sherry Rich & The Grievous Angels - Wild Dogs

Any song that opens with 'Darling please listen 'cause I've got a gun and I plan to use it before the night is done" has to surely be worth a few minutes of your time ? A friend had put this song on a mix CD he made many years ago, but I never knew that the singer is Australian !

Richard Hawley - Some Candy Talking. This fantastic cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain song was recorded for a CD that came with Q magazine in 2006. I would have included it in Hawley's best of that I mentioned in another thread, but I didn't get to pick the track list.

Five Year Plan - Martin Bramah

By Tim Rippington's youthful band from the 1980s. My current degenerate method of listening to music in a huge random shuffle of over 5,000 songs that meet one of several criteria in my iPod means that I keep finding new favorites on releases I bought several years ago.

Back in the 80s I had no idea of the existence of clever bands like the Go-Betweens, much less the uber obscure ones like Five Year Plan. My personal hierarchy of important bands from the era is totally different than it was back then.

This is found on their newish (October 2023) first album Soft Serve. Yet another lovely, understated Melbourne band.

Divine Comedy - Absent friends

Hannon gets several mentions in the Linehan memoir mentioned elsewhere. I sometimes briefly forget what a great songwriter he is. I wonder why this particular selection of friends? Woodbine Willie is a bit of an outlier, worth research.

I like some of Neil Hannon's story telling in song. 'A lady of a certain age'...
