Just starting the thread "Gigs 2024" and it's already April ! No-one going to see live music anymore ? Last night I went to see "En Attendant Ana" in Bordeaux, who were most enjoyable. A small venue (the iBoat and yes it's really a boat) but well attended. They wear their influences on their sleeves (or in the case of one of the guitarists on his chest with his "Sterolab" t-shirt) but there's something original there which lifts them out of being copyists. I confess to being a sucker for their little trumpet and saxophone flourishes. That sounds great Andrew! And it reminds me to give En Attendant Ana's third album another listen. It arrived at a time when I was inundated with other releases. I tried to find a suitable gig to see during my 8 days in Paris this past week and a half but maybe because of my anglophonic handicap (or because of my continuing refusal to touch Facebook or Instagram) I couldn't get any closer to what I hoped for than a gig by Chester Remington at place on the Quai de Valmy in the 10th. I tried to convince myself to go so I could soak up the scene, and I'd have attended if their new album sounded like their earlier EP but honestly I knew it would just be a night of ear plugs and dull grungy stuff. In my fever dreams there would have been a show by Francoiz Breut or by one of Michaël Korchia's bands or one of the new bands like Special Friend, the EggS or . . . En Attendant Ana! Lucky man. | ||

There is a show by Françoiz Breut next week, at a festival in Bruxelles. As the new album is just released, some other dates should emerge. Not to be missed. | ||

Bonnie Prince Billy Finally managed to get myself to a gig, in a beautifully rebuilt & deconsecrated church just down the hill from Perugia’s main square – BPB commenting, as he gazed around the interior, “You really can see how marvellous these buildings are once they’ve got rid of all the original iconography…” Wasn’t quite sure what to expect & avoided playing the couple of albums I have, but he leant into his more melodic, country-style vein with himself on acoustic guitar plus a guitarist/oboist and saxophonist/flautist and it all worked very well indeed. He even sang a perfectly enunciated version of Mina’s L’ultima occasione, much appreciated by the home crowd, as was the whole event. I don’t think he’ll ever match the Cash-stamped classic I see a darkness in songwriting terms but on the whole this was a fine sequence of tunes with a few real stand outs, and he was in excellent voice, every word clear as a bell. Hope to see some more concerts here in the future, would be a perfect venue for Robert! | ||

Quivers - Permanent Records Roadhouse, Los Angeles All credit to Hugh for (1) introducing me to Quivers and (2) making me aware of this show. I would not have known otherwise. The venue is not far from me, just on the other side of a small range of hills to my southeast. Quivers hail from Australia, originally Hobart but I think they may be working out of Melbourne with its big music scene nowadays. They consist of four players, two men on guitar and women on drums and bass. All four sing, sometimes in rather wonderful call and response fashion. All instruments are deployed in a simple no-nonsense fashion intended to serve the songs rather than impress the audience. They were tight as a band. I was occasionally reminded of the sound of Ocean Party though that band never had any female members as far as I can remember. It's been a good couple of weeks: The always entertaining Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain - if you ever get the chance do go to see them. They're unbelievably good and fantastically talented. Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian playing a few songs at a book event. And the Long Ryders two days ago in Bristol. Great songs and a super-energetic performance. And this gig featured two drummers. I'm not normally a fan but it led to a bigger, fuller sound rather than a barrage of noise. Though I am looking to get custom noise-reducing earplugs made for future gigs. More a result of Hawkwind than the Long Ryders... | ||

Marc Almond's concert in Cologne was no surprise. The star's voice is still as identifiable as at the beginning of his career. Lots of covers, Bowie, Brel, Bolan, etc. In a small village ten minutes from my home Dominique A gave a concert with musicians under the name of Memento. This side project pays tribute to the Nobel Prize-winning writer Patrick Modiano. The Undertones last night at the Cheese and Grain in Frome, supported by Pete Wylie and the Mighty Wah. A great gig - the Undertones powering through 33 songs in about an hour and 40 minutes. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-under tones/2024/cheese-and-grain-frome-englan d-2b5198e6.html And there was some good stuff from Mr Wylie too, including the excellent The Day That Margaret Thatcher Dies! It was still too loud for me, even at the very back of the hall (with earplugs) and outside the back doors of the hall itself without plugs. I really do wish most bands would knock the overall sound down a notch or two (technical term!) and the drum and bass down a couple of notches! |
