Pulp - Spike Island https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-27a1ugJ X8U Can't say that I was ever a massive fan, but this new single is frankly pretty fab |

Teenage Fanclub - Secret Heart, which was the b-side to their 2010 single Baby Lee. It's up there with their greatest songs. Sometimes I'm mystified as to why bands relegate their best songs to b-sides... but I also kind of like it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HH6fpFH BNA |

When I order a disc from a private seller in Australia I usually try to find some other things he or she has to add to my original choice and justify the shipping cost for me and the post office nuisance for him or her. On a recent order I discovered an album by the Woollen Kits that was more exciting than my original selection. Oz was a great source of garage rock back in the 60s and, unlike the U.S., is still able to produce an authentic updated take on the same thing. The Woollen Kits were like a restart of the Clean in the first decade of this century. They made two studio albums, both in 2012, and a smattering of random smaller releases from 2007 until 2014. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT_eHzKy hxI |

Pere Ubu - Waiting For Mary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0Ov-rJG ey8 RIP David Thomas. I'm so glad I saw Pere Ubu live, in the Mean Fiddler in Dublin in 1998. I don't think a band as wonderfully weird as Pere Ubu would ever get a major label record contract now. |

Pádraig, that's a great song and video. Pere Ubu is a name I've known - with my musical tastes from the 1980s I'd have to know the name - but they're not a band I've listened to, but having seen that I think I should give them a go. |

A small coincidence after Waiting for Mary, but the song I was going to post was Mary Jo by Belle and Sebastian. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzZ76Aw3 HSY As with a lot of their songs, it's an apparently jaunty song with a dark undertone to the lyrics. B&S have to be one of my favourite bands of the last few decades. |

Pádraig, just saw your second post on this thread - whoops! Perhaps the name of the band was poorly chosen?! |

Simon, I was hoping I’d get away with that poorly timed post. But your eagle eyes offered me no respite. I saw them in Austin, Texas in March 2021 and have been a fan ever since (different drummer back then, I hasten to add). I always thought their name was stupidly limiting, wilfully designed to ensure they’d never get mainstream radio play, especially given that back then radio play still mattered hugely to a band’s chance of success. Though, I suppose, given they’re still going a quarter century later, they have been successful. I thought the name might come back to haunt them some day, but I didn’t think it would take this long and certainly didn’t imagine it would happen as it did. I presume that’s the end of the band, or at the very least, their stupid name. |

March 2001, not 2021. Ray Davies guested with them on a cover of a Kinks song. It was a magical night. |

The New Pornographers? Clearly there's some news about them that I'm not aware of. I only know them as the band Neko Case came from. I never thought anything was wrong with their name. |

XTC - Mayor of Simpleton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bugeea9n kgY I met Andy Partridge at a book signing in Bath a few years ago (in 2016 apparently - where does the time go?!) He had a guitar with him, but didn't play anything. I'm listening to a lot of XTC and Squeeze at the moment. |

Yikes! Yes, I guess the band's name is an exceptionally unfortunate one at the moment. And perhaps Mr. Seiders took it a little too literally when scouting for a job. |

Charlie Haden & Alice Coltrane - For Turiya Exactly the sort of thing I'd think I wouldn't give the time of day to, but the scuttering harp against the big woody snap of the bass is very satisfying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9rMAYe0 VtE |

XTC - Senses Working Overtime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dPs8ePL IV8 A live version - the German TV show Rockpalast - from 1982, which is probably one of the band's last-ever performances. A shame, as they were fantastic! |
