Gene Pitney - House without windows

Gene scaling operatic heights in just under two and a half minutes. A favourite song of Leonard Cohen's, apparently.

The Throwing Muses - Bright Yellow Gun

Live version from this year's tour. I may have posted this before, but, well, it's fantastic!

They're still capable of giving me goose-bumps :-) And Lenker is such a productive song-writer !

REM - I'll take the rain

A favourite summer album. And, yes, I really would take some.

Major Stars - Blackout

What's this then? Indie prog with a slightly flat & buried folky vocal? Around since '97, apparently, but this is the first I've heard of them.

That Major Stars song is excellent. They have vanishingly few Spotify listens. I wonder if they’re a bit of a hobby band. The vocalist Noell Dorsey works in the wine industry.

Morrissey – I Have Forgiven Jesus

From 2004, in the days when the band played under and around his voice rather than the bulldozers he seems to prefer nowadays. I like the way he muffs the lyric, repeating “condescension”, then throws in a third repetition with a sly smirk. And a very good lyric it is.

Mainly Spaniards - That's What Your Friends Are For

"We'll go out and get drunk together
and get depressed together.
That's what your friends are for."

Flying Nun 1982

Seems really timely nowadays.

Thanks for the Brel, Simon. Timeless, as his songs often are. And especially now when an astonishing number of people around the world seem to have forgotten the life and world lessons of their own recent ancestors.

Uli B, hooray for Magazine! As is so common for me I discovered them right after they disbanded but once I did I was all Magazine all the time for quite a while.
