Volcanoes - Heavy Hands. I came across them through a song from this album, Oil Rainbow, being used in the Mr Mercedes TV show. https://hugevolcanoes.bandcamp.com/album /heavy-hands |

The Shop Assistants - Will Anything Happen (deluxe edition). One of those legendary 80s band I know nothing about other than their status as legends. Until I clicked play, I didn’t even know that their singer is a woman. Three tracks in and so far, so legendary. |

Ye Banished Privateers – Hostis Humani Generis. Almost certainly the best Irish folk/pirate music concept album ever made by a Swedish band. |

Protistas - Las Cruces This is probably the polar opposite of Pádraig's entry above. It's the second album by the Chilean band, very hard to obtain even in South America and thus cost me US$50 for a secondhand copy from an owner in Mexico City. And you don't want to know what I paid for shipping to get it through the gantlet of U.S. customs hassles. All entirely worth it. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_q uery=protistas+las+cruces |

Hot Face - Automated Response. A new to me band who sound a lot like the earlier, punkier Jam. I like this a lot. https://hotface.bandcamp.com/album/autom ated-response |

Pottery - Welcome To Bobby's Motel. A Canadian band who do a very good job of sounding like early Talking Heads. I have the CD, but you can stream it here https://pottery.bandcamp.com/album/welco me-to-bobbys-motel |

Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse (10th anniversary edition). With 23 tracks on one disc it’s 83.43 long. I’m pretty sure that makes it the longest CD I have. |

Beach House - Thank Your Lucky Stars. A beautiful album, though not one you’d want to play a lot of. |

Stereolab - Instant Holograms On Metal Film. It’s up there with almost anything in their extensive back catalogue. And that is serious praise. |

Praise indeed - I've had it sitting gathering dust on my "To get round to" shelf for far too long, I'd better do that soon. |

Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band - Artorius Revisited EP. I could have sworn this came out five or six years years ago. It's actually from 2013. https://michaelhead.bandcamp.com/album/a rtorius-revisited-ep |

Salif Keita – The Mansa Of Mali... A Retrospective. A brilliant compilation that I got for $3 in a charity shop a couple of days ago. (I also bought three others for the same price each. Two of the four came from the same guy, which I know because his name and address are stickered on the covers. I wish I’d been there when they were donated as I presume there were more, and the guy had good taste.) I googled the album to see how it was reviewed and the first to show up was by Robert Christgau. He gave it an A-, but his words read mostly like a diss. I just didn’t understand it. Christgau seems to be a very pretentious man who takes his job far too seriously. I recall some poster here saying something similar about Christgau in the past, having encountered him while he was reviewing some gig. Here’s my review: If you have any interest whatsoever in Malian and broader northwest African music, this is a great introduction. |

Thanks, Simon. If you ever come across it in a charity shop, don’t hesitate to get it. It’s unlikely to be available elsewhere, except maybe a second hand record shop, as I’m sure it’s long out of print. It came out in 1994. |

Robert Forster – Strawberries Lonny – ex-voto Leaning across my desk CD player, I accidentally pressed a rib against “on”, and was pleasantly surprised by a shimmery guitar intro. Took a second to realise who it was and that I hadn’t played it, or indeed anything, for a while. Taking this as a sign, I slumped back into my chair and let it run through, this time focusing on the really evocative instrumental codas to some of the songs. Right next on the pile was Lonny, so, what the hell, that went on too. Also a beautiful listen, her distinctive voice is one of my favourites. That was from 2022, isn’t it about time something else was coming out? Googled a bit and found out she did a gig in Rome a few years ago, dammit. |
