As I almost hi-jacked the what are we listening to thread with football, I thought it might be a good idea to have one out of the way...so here it is. And just to get things started. What was the 1st match you went to? What was the most recent match you went to? What's your favourate match (even if you didn't go)? My 1st Match was Liverpool v Altrincham in the FA Cup (probably 1979ish). I was enchanted by the kop (and I still am). My most recent match was Liverpool v Inter, last night 2-0 to the redmen. My favourate match, I suppose, must be Liverpool v AC Milan in Istanbul (2005) or Liverpool v West Ham (2006) in the FA Cup final. Over to you! Cheers Jon |

First match was in 1970. Man Utd Vs Man City. It was Bill Foulkes testimonial, a night match with about 70,000 in Old Trafford. City won ! Recent match was Bristol Rovers Vs Bury last season. As a Shakers fan exiled in the West Country I see them more away than home. My favourite match was when we beat Bolton 3-0 away in 1990. David Lee ripped Bolton to shreds, pity we sold him to them the following season ! I recall him scaring Liverpool one night at Anfield with his pace down the right wing when he was playing for Bolton ? I think the last time we played Liverpool was about 1979 or 1980. It was a FA Cup 4th or fifth round game, we lst 1-0 but Jimmy "Jimmy Mac Whoa Jimmy Mac" McIlwraith hit the bar. |

First match was QPR at home against Ipswich in 1979, I think it was a draw. A fair result since they were Uefa cup holders & we were relegation fodder at the time. Most recent was a 2-1 win vs Colchester. Highlight was the opportunity to boo Sheringham. For so much diving down the years & general uselessness in an England shirt. He should have been sent off but the crafty git got away with it, yet again. Favourites would be Good Friday 1986 (6-0 against the bourgouisie) I didn't stop grinning 'til Christmas! The 4-1 win at Man U helping to scupper their championship chances. Also some fleeting moments Wegerle's goal against Leeds, Sinclair against Barnsley, all the more special moments because they happen so infrequently for us. |

Liverpoll v Wolverhampton Wanderers. I lived near Wolves ground Molinuex, however was a BIG Liverpool fan. I think it was 1980. Kenny was there, Jimmy Case I think scored a corker form 30 yards. It was 1-0, I was the only young face to cheer amongst 5,000 people standing up in the Wolves end!!!! Most recent match I was Aston Villa, against West Ham about 3 or 4 years ago. It was shit. My fave match to watch, I think its a toss up between the following:, 1. Scotland 1978 World cup, the Archie Gemmell goal game, also 2. the Peru match of the same tournament when the goalkeeper ran with the ball the whole length of the pitch, I can't remember if he scored. 3. Would be Liverpool vs Bruge Euro Championship final, was it '79? The Kenny goal and jumpover the ad hoarding. 4, England's thrashing of Germany a couple of years ago, I have never felt so elated, even though I am a Scotland supporter. |

My first match was Dundee United versus Hamilton Academicals in a freezing Tayside drizzle... I was nine or so I guess. After United scored their seventh goal on the mudchurned pit of a field, my old man removed his pipe and asked me, "Are you enjoying this, son?" I could feel the icy water streaming down my spine. "No, dad," I said with heartfelt honesty. "Then bugger this for a lark, let's go home." And that was also the last football match I ever attended. |

1st match: Limerick versus Waterford at The Market's Field in probably 1977. I can't remember the score. Most recent match: Sydney vs Queensland on 25 January. 0-0. A very frustrating match, but not a bad one. Favourate match: I'm going to pick three, all of which I was at. 1 Ireland v Holland in Lansdowne Road, Dublin, September 2001. Ireland won 1-0 and went on to play in the World Cup at Holland's expense. 2 Australia v Uruguay in the Olympic Stadium, Sydney, November 2005. Australia won 1-0, thus sending the match to extra time as Uruguay had won 1-0 in the first leg. Still tied after the extra 30 minutes. It went to penalties. Australia won. An incredibly tense, dramatic evening. I had a couple of drinks afterwards and then had to go and write a report on it for The Irish Times. I had predicted before the game that it would go to penalties. 3 Korea v Togo in Frankfurt, June 2006. It was my first ever World Cup game and a childhood dream come true. Korea won 2-1 and their fans were colourful and magnificent. There were not many Togo fans there. I was extraordinarily hungover after watching Australia beat Japan on television in Dublin the previous day. I caught up with friends and drank all afternoon and most of the night. How I survived the flight to Frankfurt at 6am the next morning without being sick is a miracle of sorts. I met some other Irish guys in Frankfurt and we had a ball. My World Cup adventure was underway. |

Well once again my team (Liverpool) has come up with a brilliant victory, but does Rafa receive paise - does he hell as like! * Torres has been 'rotated' too much this season * They only won because Inter had someone sent off * Carra shouldn't be playing right back I thought he was going to get a question upon how Liverpool staying in Eurpoe is increasing global warming due to the extra flights! Sorry for the [slight] rant, but if your not interested in football maybe this thread isn't for you. New Question - Any favourate overseas clubs. I quite like St Pauli of Hamberg due to their anti-racism stance. Cheers Jon |

1 First match was Chelsea v Man City, August 1971. Stood on the Shed with my dad... Chelsea went 2-0 up kicking towards the other end and I didn't see a thing. City scored two in the second half and I didn't see a thing. A metaphor for most of my supporting life. Incidentally, that was the third game after we won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1971; the next 'proper' trophy was May 1997. You could say I saw that whole barren period. 2 Most recent match: Champions League Final, Moscow, 21 May. 3 Difficult question, but I'll plump for Chelsea 4, Liverpool 2, FA Cup fourth round 1997: 0-2 down at half time, and it could have been three or four; Gullit juggles the team, brings on Sparky and, bang, it's 4-2 in no time. We won the cup, then the cup winners cup and it quite probably kick-started the whole recent run of success. I like Stuart's entry. I've felt like that many times. I also once saw Watford beat Sunderland 8-0 - Ally McCoist was playing for the Black Cats. Luther Blissett scored four. Bizarre. |

Just wondering if there's any interest in a Go-B's Euro fantasy league. If so go here: http://eurofantasyfootball.metro.co.uk/ It closes 5PM on Friday. David Gagen ran away with the 2007/08 season title like a strident Liverpool in the '80's. |

Jerry I'm not sure I'll bother.....I loose interest very quickly and then it becomes a bit of a pain. But, while the threads here who do we think's going to take home the silverware. I think its wide open with the usual suspects of Italy, Germany and France, with the usual 2nd suspects of Spain and Portugal. My money would probably be on Germany though, and as a Liverpool fan I'll have to cheer on Spain. Here's to another three weeks of football. Cheers Jon |

I was lucky enough to get Germany in the sweep, so I think I'm at least going to get my money back (for 3rd or 4th). Poland aren't too bad a team, but I wouldn't expect them to be around when the Semi's start. Cheers Jon |

They've been third in world cups twice, Poland, as I recall, but they're not strong enough this time. Mind you, the tourney is effectively divided into two halves and they're in the weaker half, so you never know. |

1st Match Chelsea 1-2 Leeds 1973/4. Sat in the Benches and when Osgood scored I did not realise I was meant to stand up, much to my brother's digust. Most recent match Moscow. Favourite Match maybe Man City away in 1983/4. Division 2, Dixon/Speedie/Nevin in their prime, Friday night live on BBC and about 5000 travelling supporters creating a great atmosphere. Mind you finally beating our supposed bogey side in the semis this year was pretty good. |

Hey, I was there at Man City, Gully. Top night. Paul Canoville played well, and Pat scored a cracker. Saw him in Moscow. He has two metal hips now, and needed a stick because the second one has only just gone in. Top man all round. |

Spain are the best team I have watched so far in Euro 2008. Pace, movement, creativity and teamwork = potential winners for me. I know its hypothetical, but if England were involved (and lets face it McLaren would still be manager) I think they would do well to come 2nd bottom in whatever group they were in. European teams dont stick to rigid formations and adapt to how the game is going, England didnt under McLaren and so would have been found out. If Spain dont win, hopefully Portugal, or Holland do. |

Well its a new season, and I thought I'd bring this bang up to date. A couple of wins for England, including an amazing victory 4-1 in Croatia. A couple of wins for my beloved Liverpool, including an amazing 2-1 victory against Manchester United (any victory against Manchester United is amazing due to the long, long time between them). Huge Money investment in Manchester City. And the Champions League really starts tonight following qualifications (which Liverpool only just managed). Cheers Jon |

Liverpool to win the league for the first time since 1990! Celtic to win again in Scotland! And Sydney to win in Australia (going to see them play Adelaide today - Adelaide should be well tired after their fine away draw in Japan in the Asian CL quarter final). |

Ah, footie! My first match was Bath City vs Waterlooville at Twerton Park c1973 ("Fortress Twerton" as it was fondly known when Bristol Rovers moved in later). I don't get to see many matches though. When Bristol Rovers were tenants I did see a fair few midweek matches but used to play football on Saturday so couldn't make many games. I was going to say that my last match was Ferencváros vs Feyenoord in the 2004 UEFA Cup (I was on holiday in Budapest) and then I remembered watching Rennes vs Nice (I think) last year on holiday. My favourite match was Slavia Prague vs forgotten opposition in Prague. First off we went to the wrong stadium! They'd moved in the previous few months, which meant a 15km taxi journey across Prague with a German couple who'd done the same thing. Why was it so memorable? It was about 60p to get in to a top division match, you could take (equally cheap but excellent) beer and sausages back to your seats. Brilliant. I support Tottenham, for my sins. And though not a gambler, at the last World Cup put a fiver on Argentina (the best team) and the same on Italy. Result! Though Italy let me down badly at Euro 2008. And though it's early days, I thought England's performance against Croatia was one of the best I'd seen from them. They held the ball up and - shockingly - didn't concede possession all the time. With Hargreaves to come back in I'm actually quite hopeful. I also reckon Joe Cole is England's best player, by quite a margin at the moment. Now nack to work, |

I suppose you have, but for the wrong reasons! It's early days though.... Merseyside derby on Saturday, so here's to an early start. Cheers Jon |

Good win for my boys in the derby, 2-0 to Liverpool. Not the greatest game, but they rarely are, and nice to see Torres get a couple. I still think we're a fair bit behind Arsenal, never mind United & Chelsea, but its the best start to a premiership season for years. Champions League up on Wednesday. Cheers Jon |

Another couple of good wins for Liverpool this week (Chelsea away and Portsmouth at home). Don't know when the bubble will burst this season, but enjoying it while it lasts. Probably get beat at Spurs on the weekend, but couldn't be happier at the moment. Not 100% football related, but in the UK a couple of radio presenters have been banned by the BBC, and the BBC get Kelvin MacKenzie to talk about morals......the same man who was editor for The S*n's 'The Truth' article following Hillsborough. Makes me sick! Cheers Jon |

Just saw my first game of Premier League. Last Sunday saw Man City lose at home to Fullham. We don't have a fraction of the atmosphere back home in OZ. The continual singing of abuse, call and response type of barracking. Although City fans went home disappointed, the atmosphere was amazing. Then on Wednesday, was among the 30000 crowd or so at Anfield to remember the tragic events that occurred at Hillsborough 20 yrs ago. As a Liverpool fan from childhood growing up on a farm in Queensland Australia, I never would have imagined that I would one day be singing You'll Never Walk Alone at Anfield. But the feeling was one of immense grief and sadness as the day belonged to the families of those who lost loved ones, and to the city of Liverpool who came together in solidarity with thesae families. A very emotional day. Am in UK for 3 more months. Will try and get to a gig soon. |

David Anfield was a real picture that day, as you said it was really emotional. Hopefully the Government received the kick up the backside to re-open the files and allow Trevor Hicks and Anne Williams to get the justice/peace they should have had so many years back. Let me know what gigs you have planned (if in the North West) and I'll see if its possible for a few drinks. Cheers Jon |

My take on Chelsea V Barcelona. Over the 2 legs only one team tried to actually play football, I mean purposeful attacking possession passing football. The other team put men behind the ball and tried to defend first 0-0 at Barc then hold on to 1-0 at home. Chelsea left em selvs wide open to what actually happened. To not even try to achieve a result in the 1st leg was a big mistake from Hiddink. Defense can become all consuming and it is accompanied by a mindset that ultimately is self defeating. The final deserves to be played by 2 teams prepared to play attractive football. |

It all went horribly wrong, Kev. Just watched a rerun of the Chelsea flower show. Chelsea v Barcelona. A lot of lilies, pansies & the occasional weeping willow. Aside from the diving & rucking it was everything the European cup should be about. It's something you only get in the later rounds now. The league basis just doesn't work. Every game should have the same level of importance & not designed to channel as much lolly out of/back into the same 12 clubs. The Uefa cup is relegated to a similar dullness until the 1/4 finals. Though even ambitious clubs put out weakened teams in this because it is considered so inferior. Looking forward to the final, could be a classic. |

Was at Celtic Park for last game against Hearts Padraig. Disappointing final outcome etc but was just glad to get in as I didnt have a ticket until I rocked up and they had a couple left just before kickoff. Crowd was amazing to start with but became increasingly frustrated aa team couldnt find back of net and scores relayed thru from Dundee that Rangers had scored early goal (followed by 2 more!!) Could have been joyous unique occassion but wasnt to be. Went to Brazen Head to drink away the sorrows and sing irish music all night. Now for tonights blockbuster. My prediction 2-1 to Barcelona |

Well New season on the cards (in europe), what are people's expectations? As a Liverpool fan I'm gutted we've lost Xabi, he controls the play so well, but we're getting an Italian in who I don't know a huge amount about. Lost a couple more players in Sami and Arbeloa so it might be difficult for us. I think probably 2nd or 3rd again, and maybe a decent cup run. League winners probably United again, but without Carlos & Ronaldo it will be interesting for them. Cheers Jon |

great result (2-0) for celtic in moscow this evening in the champions league qualifier. 1-0 down from the first leg at home it was looking grim but now that they are up to speed (technically still in pre season) celtics class against what are really a mediocre russian team ultimately saw them through. predictions. celtic for the spl, chelsea for the epl,man utd for the european cup and, shock horror, england for the world cup |

i do padraig. i just think that england finally have the manager to guide them to the ultimate prize again. they will never have been so well prepared for a tournament. as for the competition, germany, holland, france and italy are at best on a par, or inferior to england, Spain will never win a world cup and you can discount the rest of the european competition. brazil and argentina will be dangerous as always but these countries have more chance if the tournament takes place in latin america. with all that in mind, added to the fact that terry and ferdinand are the best defensive pairing in world football, gerrard, joe cole, rooney and lampard will be at their career peaks, and a revitalised michael owen up front, I think it could be englands year. the rest of the squad are at worst decent players, some like gareth barry and ashley cole are excellent.the only provisos i would have are that the important players i listed must all be fit, if even 2 of that lot are missing that could put paid to their chances. goalkeeper might be a worry mind you :-) |

Thought I'd bring this back to life - even though Liverpool's performances make me wonder if its a real good idea. I'll start with the United / Chelsea game, another loss and another moan about refs. I wonder if United will ever lose a game fair and square while Slur Alex is manager. Gives Chelsea a decent 5 point lead over United, though I think they'll miss 4 players for the African Nations early next year...could be interesting. Liverpool have just battered Birmingham 2-2, I think we had 25-30 chances compared with about 7-8 for Birmingham, and we only got the point after an awful dive from Ngog, which is a shame because he played well and all we'll have is the press on a witch hunt. Having said that the whole season at Liverpool's been like a witch hunt. Anyway, that's all for now - International break this weekend - I wonder which Liverpool player will break. Cheers Jon |

Padraig - How very 'English' of me...I forgot, for a minute, that it wasn't just friendlies..a huge couple of games for Ireland. I'd really love to go to Croke Park one day, it seems an iconic stadium, which I'm sure will give great support this weekend. Is it an early start for you Sunday morning? Cheers Jon |

I wish I had the channel it's on Jon, but I don't. I suppose I could get up and go to an Irish bar to watch it, but I'll probably just listen to the RTE radio commentary on the internet. So yes, an early start anyway! |

Jonathon after this year there won't be any more soccer or rugby in Croke Park as Lansdowne Road will be re-built. Anyway you'd be much better off going to see an All-Ireland final there. I'd recommend an All-Ireland Hurling final... Anyway back to this Saturday's crunch first leg. I can't see any other winner than France and for the neutrals France would be a much better prospect than Ireland in SA....but hopefully we can do something. Sincerely doubt it but we're best when we're underdogs.. |

US style football: My local local high school having won their district final last Friday is now onto their regional Division 1 football match this Friday night. The Clarkston Wolves are undefeated at 11-0 this year. If they win two more games they will be at the Division 1 final at Ford Field (were the woefull Detroit Lions play) Thanksgiving weekend. |

Feel sorry for our Irish messageboard users. Played really well over the 2 legs against the French, and only a bit of Henry cheating got them home. I know being a Liverpool fan, we haven't got too much of a case of the moral high ground after Ngog's dive a week back. Feel for you, and its a shame you won't have the World Cup next year. the french were a disgrace tonight, and i'm not talking about the circumstances of the winner. apart from the excellent goalkeeper and the ever willing anelka the french played like a sunday pub team who couldnt string two passes together. if ireland had torres up front they would have won the game 3-0 in 90 mins, they dont unfortunately and passed up some great chances to win the game |

uefa are piloting a scheme in this years europa league competition where they have used 2 extra referees assistants, each strategically placed in the vicinity of the two goal areas. the way they are placed one of them would have been less than a few feet away from henry when he handled,he would definetely have spotted it. i reckon this will now be fast tracked through and it will be used in south africa next year |

Absolutely gutted after last night's fiasco. Ireland have nobody to blame but themselves really, should have easily won in the 90 minutes. Doyle, Duff and O'Shea all had great chances which they fluffed. Their keeper was great though, Man United should snap him up ASAP. France were awful and I can't really blame Henry, if it was an Irish player we'd probably gladly take it. It's the Referee's I blame. Woeful decision. Anyway FIFA got what they wanted, they rigged the play-offs so that Portugal and France would get easier passages. Then they needed the help of the Ref to get France through. Sickening. |

"Henry admitted the ball had struck his arm and claimed he told the referee what had happened. The Barcelona forward said: "The ball hit my hand, I will be honest. It was a handball, you can clearly see it. (Sebastien) Squillaci went to jump with two Irish players, I was behind him and the next thing I know the ball hit my hand." "It was a handball, but I'm not the ref. I told (the referee) but he said to me the same: 'You are not the ref." |

Bollix to Henry. He didn't mention that to the Ref until he'd spent a few minutes celebrating with his team mates. And he handled it at least twice before he passed it to Gallas. And as the free kick was taken there was a French player clearly off-side. Bollix and double bollix. |

US style football: Update on my Clarkston Wolves football team, they beat two time Division 1 champs (2005 and 2006) Macomb Dakota last Friday night. They are now 12-0 and take on 12-0 Sterling Heights Stevenson (where my niece Lauren graduated from in 2001) at a neutral field this Saturday. Clarkston got this far in 1999 and 2000, but lost both of those semi-final games. Living here in Detroit Lion country, the old decent football we see at Ford Field is Thanksgiving weekend when all 8 divisions play their final games. |

Algerian war, bombing of the Rainbow warrior, giving the world Johnny Halliday...there are worse things Pádraig As I live in staunch rugby country, nobody seems very interested locally. I get the impression that the French are not that interested in football and only get worked up about the national team when they are doing well (social commentators made that point in '98 I seem to recall). Certainly Président Sarkozy constantly looked on the point of falling asleep when the camera panned on to him. Or maybe Carla is just wearing him out ? The French friend that I watched the match with shrugged it off with gallic indifference: "the Irish would have done the same thing in the same circumstances" But it was my teenage son (who always supports the opposition in matches against France), who reacted with real indignant anger. I think it was a reaction to the principles with which he has been bought up; "show respect and play fair". The fact that a player at that level could so blatantly cheat AND get away with it stunned him. Apparently a French teachers' union has condemmed Henry, issuing a statement "The France team will go to South Africa courtesy of unquestionable cheating which highlights the downward spiral affecting football today." It made me sad in the sense that you question everything that you belive in. Do we acknowlege the reality of the world (dog eat dog and money talks louder than anything else) or still strive for something better and fairer? |

Well, Henry showed some nice rugby ball handling skills on Wednesday night Andrew... Good on your son for being outraged and you and your wife for raising him like that. I told my daughter she can't play with her Swedish friend anymore (the ref was Swedish). She thinks I was kidding! |

Let's not forget the nuclear testing on the Mururoa Atolls Andrew The game is over and we should just let it go at this stage. The Irish govenrment are now embarrisingly getting in on the act, purely and solely to deflect from their own criminal (and I mean criminal literally) handling of the Irish economy. They're as much a bunch of fraudsters as FIFA. |

Not impressed with the owners, who basically gave Rafa no money to spend in the summer (after outgoings and incomings). Aqualani, who replaced Alonso, hasn't really played due to injury. Torres & Gerrard have both been injured (as well as others like Reira, Benny, Carra, Agger and so on). Rafa has to take his share of blame also. Not good days, but when you walk through a storm... Rafa's position is safe if the fans have anything to do with it, the vast majority remain very loyal. The owners might be a different issue! Alonso is a great player, and its always sad to see quality leave Liverpool, but he's gone, we got good money - which if invested in new players would have allowed you to better compete this season. It's funny how shit unfolds. Liverpool & Man U are 2 of the clubs in the deepest debt. At least they're still top flight & not exactly struggling with desperate relegation. Which one's going to do a Leeds first? I'd be happy to see Rangers get a coach that can last a season. |

Jerry - I think Portsmouth will do a Leeds before Liverpool or United. The debt issue affects more clubs, with Chelsea and Manchester City just being Russian/Middle East play-things. Big game for Liverpool on Wednesday, against Spurs, the battle for 4th...you don't know how depressing it is for a Liverpool fan to say coming 4th is a big achievement! Cheers Jon |

The nearby Pontiac Silverdome recently fielded a football match between AC Milan and Panathinaikos FC. The Detroit area has a lot of folks with Greek heritage, so Panathinaikos was a smart pick. Since the Detroit Lions NFL franchise relocated to Ford Field close to downtown Detroit, the Silverdome has been pretty much vacant. It would be great to get more football matches into the Silverdome, as it (and downtown Pontiac) really hopped when they had four first round World Cup games there in 1994. |

Not exactly the type of football being discussed here, but the Detroit Lions have made the NFL playoffs for the first time since 1999. The Lions were one of the three dominate NFL teams back in the 1950's, winning three championships during the 50's. They traded star quarterback Bobby Layne in 1958 and he was reported to have stated after the trade that he hoped the Lions wouldn't win for 50 years. 53 years later the Lions have only won only 1 playoff game win way back in 1991. The curse might finally be lifted however, as the Lions 3rd year quarterback Matt Stafford went to the same Dallas high school as Bobby Layne did, and even lived on the same street! |

The New Engalnd Patriots are a great offensive team. They have enough firepower to overcome their realtively mediocre defense to beat Baltimore and Pittsburgh and reach the Super Bowl. It would be a great match between Green Bay and New England. New Orleans and New England would be pretty decent as well. I'll be happy if the Detroit Lions can win 1 playoff game. If they can win this weekend at Green Bay (who will rest a lot of their starters no doubt), then they should have an relative easy first playoff game against an inferior New York Giants or Dallas Cowboys team. Even though it will be a road, the Lions will probably be favored. |

I'm prepared to discuss both forms of football, my 'American' Football team is Denver - so we've had the Tebow sideshow this season, but at least we've made the play offs - though Pittsburgh will be far too strong. I'm hoping to get over to Denver in the next year or two after seeing them at Wembley. Cheers Jon |
