So many great records. So many great shows. The unlikeliest pop star ever became the greatest songwriter ever. And still doing great work right up to the end unlike so many others who peter out. Further, longer, higher, older. Oh, Grant, you weren't supposed to leave us yet. |

When all the laughter dies in sorrow And the tears have risen to a flood When all the wars have found a cause In human wisdom and in blood Do you think they´ll cry in sadness Do you think the eye will blink Do you think they´ll curse the madness Do you even think they´ll think When all the great galactic systems Sigh to a frozen halt in space Do you think there will be some remnant Of beauty of the human race Do you think there will be a vestige Or a sniffle or a cosmic tear Do you think a greater thinking thing Will give a damn that man was here (Kendrew Lascelles) Grant, thank you! Thank you for the music, thank you for being a wonderful friend. Andreas |

I always hoped we'd work togther again. I went from a fan to a friend of Grant and Robert while making The Friends of Rachel Worth. Last US tour Robert and I discussed their dates and how I was unable to see them. I always figured I would see them play again. I'll especially miss the little christmas cards with the enthusiastic notes on what was happening in his life. And I'll always remember doing Karaoke with Grant and seeing him sit on a stool and sing "Daydream Believer" without even looking at the prompter. He shall be missed. -Larry Crane |

I'm still in shock. I've been a big fan of Grant's music for over 15 years and have seen The Go-Betweens live many times. Cattle and cane was the first ever song I played my son when he was born last year. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends, Rich |

It's just a terrible thing to think that a life can end with such finality, such abruptness. He is a very funny man and a fine songwriter from a country and a part of a country not renowned for its artists. I can't imagine how hard this will be for his family but mostly I think about Robert and it's to him that my heart goes and to all of you who love him so. |

I posted this at the teenage fanclub board earlier Francis called me earlier, and I'm still trying to take it in. It's terrible news. I am absolutely shocked. Grant was a wonderful person. Fantastic songwriter. Some of you may know that we were friendly with the Go Betweens, having played a number of shows with them over the years. They were fantastic. Great music, lovely people. On the last night of the last tour that we did with them, only last year, Grant prepared us the legendary "go between" cocktail, basically taking whatever alcohol was near to hand, and mixing it together (that's how it appeared to me anyway) He was a sweetheart, a lovely, lovely guy. Always bright and engaging. Absolutely the life and soul of the party. I'll be playing his music tonight, and thinking fondly of him and his beautiful smile. He will be sadly missed. One of my heroes. Love you Grant. |

I've only just found out. To say I'm shocked is the worst understatement of all time - how can someone die so young? Useless thing to say, but I've just been watching a drama documentary about Bobby Moore, England's World Cup winning captain who died of cancer in 1993, far too young as well, and that brought a lot of tears to my eyes. I really cannot believe we'll never seen Grant with Robert on stage again. This is incredibly sad. May he rest in peace. |

I'm at such a loss for proper words. Everytime I ever spoke to him ,he was such pleasant ,kind and decent person. It was like running into someone who you went to school with. That even though you weren't ever such close friends and hadn't seen each other for years , you shared so much in common experiences that it was like years hadn't passed and you felt such a deep, warm comraderie. I often caution people not make too much effort to meet your heroes as you are often let down. Grant such a true exception to that. I have been lucky enough to have had my love of music become my hobby and my hobby to have become my life . Grant's songs have held me steady through both good and bad times. I would never be able express the gratitude properly for what his music has meant to me. I can truly say, without any hesitation, the greatest joy and professional privliage I have ever had,or will ever have, was spooling-up the masters for 16 Lovers Lane and pressing "play". It was a honor to be able to work on it. My suggestion for everyone is to pick your favorite one of Grant's songs and tonight put it on ( LOUD or soft) and pour a glass , light a candle and toast to one of the best. I will miss most the songs we had yet to and will now never hear. Bill |

i first met Grant in Los Angeles on their first trip out here in 85...instantly charmed, we became fast friends, along with Robert and the rest of the group. He told me he was dying to try REAL mexican food for the first time, so he and Lindy hopped in my car and we headed for the best i could find. of course we had to stop for beer first and although i mentioned a certain law against opening and driving, we cracked a few and headed to santa monica. at the table, he spied some EXTEMELY HOT peppers that they set out for the daring. i warned him against eating any. he ignored my warning and bit into one whole pepper, chewed for a while, and the sweat started pouring off his face...he went RED!!...smiled, guzzled some beer and then DID IT AGAIN...3 more times!! "we dont have anything like that down in australia" he said...! He was a bounder of adventure...a true inspiration to me and my music and my thoughts through the 20+ years of our friendship. a gentleman and scholar, wise sage and jokerman. a beautiful man. my thoughts and love to your family and friends... i will miss you forever my friend. -Geoff, Elisa and baby Ella |

I just logged into go-betweens.net, expecting to enjoy the latest chat on the board. I'm in shock and in tears now. I feel like I've lost a very good friend, and my heart goes out to Grant's family, girlfriend, many other fans, bandmates past and present, and especially his longtime partner/co-conspirator/friend Robert. He was so young--robbed of so many years of experiencing life and creating his timeless art. There's so much I want to say right now, but all I can type out is "ride on, Black Mule." R.I.P. Grant McLennan. You will be missed. |

I am truly gutted at hearing the terrible news. Grant was without a doubt one of the most unsung singer-songwriters out there (especially here in the US), and I will always remember most fondly the 1st time I played the "Horsebreaker Star" CD (my first experience with either Grant or the Go-Betweens) and realizing that this was a life-changing event...I had never heard anything so melodic, warm, and just plain GOOD. My deepest sympathies to all of his close friends and family. |

Shocking and terrible news, this. I had the pleasure of promoting one of their Seattle gigs in the '80s, and had rediscovered my love of the band (as I do every few years) when they played a gorgeous set at The Triple Door last June. I've spent considerable time over the past year pouring over all things Go-Betweens and being blown away time and time again by the beauty of this band's work, in every incarnation. Cheers, dear Grant, for all that you added to my life. Best wishes to all family, friends and fans who are sharing this mighty, mighty loss. |

I've now being making my own records for 20 years with my band BMX Bandits. The first record that bonded me with my best friend and ex-fellow Bandit, Norman Blake (now of Teenage Fanclub), was by The Go-Betweens. We weren't the only Bandits who loved The Go-Betweens...Sushil, Francis, Jim, John and Finlay all big fans. Sushil (with his Future Pilot aka) had a dream come true when he got to make a record with The Go-Betweens. Norman and I needed a record to bond to and BMX Bandits needed The Go-Betweens. Thank you Grant for songs that touched us and inspired us... and for the magic you made with Robert. Our thoughts are with all who loved Grant. |

I feel like I've lost a good friend and brother. I don't say this lightly, but Grant's music changed my life and was the embodiment of grace... Indeed everything about the man bespoke grace, from his beautiful melodies, to his angelic voice to his perpetually smiling eyes... Over a quarter of a century of quality. There is a Go Betweens song that goes hand in hand with many great times in my life and others that have helped me through some very dark times. You and Robert are my Lennon and McCartney and I will miss the partnership so much. The last time I saw you was at a half empty Theatre Royal in Hobart, you both tore the house down. I've been deeply sad all day at the news of this. This was definitely the *last* thing I expected to hear when waking up today. Grant has had such a profoundly enormous impact on my life and my own music, that it's quite obvious I'd be a different person writing different music without his inspiration. There were times in my life when I probably couldn't have even gotten out of bed were it not for his voice and his songs. All those hours spent alone at home with his records, with his gorgeous melodies creating a continuous wave of chills tingling up and down my spine, are among the happiest moments of my life. Those moments will take on even greater meaning for me now. I feel horribly sad for those who had the privaledge of knowing him, as they have surely lost a great friend. And the music world will forever be a lesser place now that it has been robbed of his passionate genius. It's doubly tragic that he clearly had so much more left to offer and to say, artistically. I suppose there's comfort in knowing that people will continue to find solace and that goose-bumps enducing experience in Grant's music. My thoughts and sympathies go out to his friends, family, and of course, to Robert. |

It was a night of pure musical bliss - the two bands that, if it comes to it, make me happy and make me realise the value of music and life. Only weeks before had we seen robert and grant play the ferry and avalanche records in edinburgh (http://www.flickr.com/photos/hz/sets/342814/) - i'm not normally an autograph hunter, but both robert and grant signed my copy of Lovers Lane. Grant was his usual shy, modest self, and wrote 'sydney in 88 was great', which for me summed up part of their legacy nicely: the gbs were a product of the 80s and brought antipodean sunshine to lots of lives. However, there's no denying it: Grant was one of the greatest word and song smiths of the last 50 years and I can't believe he won't be writing any more songs... He wrote some of the most haunting songs and lyrics ever and I can't think of anyone that could turn melancholy into such a life-affirming force. I'd always thought that 'Devil's eye' would be my wedding song, and always imagined that Grant would be singing it for me and my girl. It's not to be though.... Sweet dreams Grant. I already miss you... |

The first time i saw the G.Bs was when they just got back from the U.K.. Watching Robert & Grant work together on stage was magic.. I'll miss seeing him hang out at ric's. Sometimes don't you wish you could go back a day and make everything different. |

Grant worked in my record shop in the late 1970's in Toowong, He came in late one night after closing with a flagon of wine in his hand and said to me that he and Robert were thinking of recording two songs for a single. I said "Gee, do you you think that will work?" My heart goes out to Grant's family and friends and of course to Robert Forster. Can we ever forget those cricket matches on the tennis court? We will never forget you Grant. Damian |

I am shocked and saddened. My sympathies go out to Grant's loved ones, friends and family. Grant will be missed by all who loved his music, and came to know him by way of his music. He was a unique musical expressionist, and his character lives one with all of us. Daniel |

My heart goes out to his family, especially to his son Nathan. What a beautiful, beautiful man. I only saw him last week, playing records, talking to me about François Truffaut films and telling me how excited he was about recording the next Go-Betweens record. He'll be greatly missed by everyone who was touched by his music and friendship alike. It's a very sad day in Brisbane. |

As for everyone here, this comes as a great shock. I'm sitting here in Japan, and got the news as an ABC email bulletin. A sad day for all, most particularly Grant's family and friends, but also for the people who were touched by the music he produced with Robert and the band, as well as through his individual recordings. I'm just glad that I had the chance to listen and be moved and inspired, and to see him live, albeit on only two occasions. I'll be listening to you today, Grant, and for a long time to come. |

I took this chance to write a message - it's just to say that I'll miss you. Over half my life has been spent with the Go-Betweens as my soundtrack, through good times and bad. Their gig here in Brooklyn last year was a transcendent experience as always - I am so sorry it was the last. This is an incalculable loss. My heart goes out to his family, to Robert, and to my fellow fans. |

Awful news. A few weeks ago I gave a lecture on fashion in Australian rock and pop at a conference in New Zealand, and some choice quotes from Grant featured heavily thanks to his incisive views and sly sense humour. A wonderful songwriter who will live on through his music, and in our memories of his performances. |

RIP GW - you provided great inspiration for Queensland boys who didn't fit the usual Brisbane mould and offered an example of what you could do if you put your mind to it. Lee Remick forever! I have just been in Brisbane visiting family and travelling on the trains and listening to Oceans Apart. It seemed to fit that role so well. It is one of my current favourite travelling albums. Like all gb albums it was a gem and there are too many to list here. We will miss you. |

Just now heard the news on RRR and all I can keep saying is, 'you're fucking joking me.' But no, it's no joke. I remember seeing Grant play a solo show at the Grosvenor in WA and it remains one of the great shows of all time. He played almost an exclusive set of new songs that became 'Horsebreaker Star' (if I remember rightly) and it was truly memsmerising. No one, but no one left that pub without a huge smile on their face, even if they weren't a fan. they certainly were after that show. The Go Betweens have been my go to band for years now and I feel truly priviliged to have seen them before and after their haitus. RIP Grant. Sympathies to his family and to Robert. |

It didn't take long for Grant to worm his way into my heart and my life. I can remember being a snotty little kid dancing around the lounge-room floor to my big sister's GBs albums. I fell out of favour with them with the on-set of puberty and "coolness". But it was only a fleeting visit as the GBs pulled me back in with their infectious but poignant slices of life. Grant - you are a beautiful human being and one that made the world so much richer just with your existence and your willingness to share your thoughts and voice. Somehow a little light went off in my heart today. Peace mate. |

A life cut terribly short. So many memories are tied in with their songs.....lying down on a verandah on a sweltering Christmas Day with my brother and sisters listening to to Spring Hill Fair over and over again, a crowded and smokey Blue Gum Hotel (the first gig I ever saw), catching the train to town to get 16 Lover's Lane the day it was released, photographing them for my HSC major art work, dancing at the Tivoli, wild times trying to get into gigs to see them underage, Sydney summers, my most played walkman tapes in Toyko winters, always listening to the Go-Betweens. I didn't know Grant personally but the music he and Robert made over so many years has been so important ot me. My heart has broken a little bit today. Condolences to his family, friends and Robert. |

I took a punt on a hip looking black and white album back in 1986 at Phantom records in Sydney as a 15 year old - 18 yrs later bought that same album again as a CD at your show at the Metro. It still sounds great, timeless and Australian - Liberty Bell & the Black Diamond Express for me was a lifelong introduction to the Go Betweens - "the light always shines the brightest in the core of a flame". In 1988, my friend Vaughn put Tallulah and 16 Lovers Lane on two sides of a C-90, filled out the rest of the tape with some other choice songs (Cattle & Cane among them), and handed it to me. I fell in love instantly, and proceeded to grab all their records over the next year or two. I stupidly passed up a couple chances to see them live back then, thinking I'd get around to it next time. It was good seeing them finally on the 2000 reunion tour, but even better seeing them in really top form last year. Grant, you had a lot of great music left in you. You will be missed. |

I was an almost direct contemporary of Grant - we were born in the same city (Rockhampton) 10 months apart, both grew up on cattle properties, both attended University of Queensland at the same time, and met in passing along the way. I have long admired Grant's stellar career and have felt enormously proud of his and Robert's talent and achievements. Grant's passing has saddened me deeply, and I would like to pass on to Grant's family and girlfriend, and to Robert & his family, and to the band, my deepest condolences at this sad and tragic time. May Grant's gifts of song continue to live and grow among us all. Ian Dearden |

One of the last real romantic bohemians. No watch, wallet or drivers licence, he seemed to live life at a different speed. He always had a view of things that was insightful and which I invariably went away thinking about. I've been thinking about a few of them since hearing the sad news of his death yesterday. I recall late one night in 1981 Grant standing at the bar of the Queensland Institute of Technology (now QUT) Campus Club, one of the many live venues in Brisbane at that very lively time. My band had just played a not very memorable gig, but Grant strained to offer a compliment "I liked that Wire song (Outdoor Miner) you played". A more recent memory is of driving down Moray Street in New Farm and seeing Grant walking along the footpath. I slowed the car and offered him a ride. Grant jumped in and before I could establish where he was going we got to talking about the Bob Dylan concert that I'd seen a few nights before down on the beach at Ballina. Grant hadn't seen the show but he wanted to know what I thought. I recall him expressing disappointment that Dylan had stopped singing or even trying to sing. I remember saying "yes, you're right, but it didn't really trouble me because he looked just so into playing with his band". Grant then said "Could you see if he was shaking his leg, that's the real indicator you know ?" Before I could answer (and indeed I had seen the famous Dylan leg-shake), Grant indicated that we had travelled as far as he was going, thanked me for the lift, and was on his way again. Bon voyage. |

I heard the news this morning but it's taken all day to contemplate the sad truth. As editor of Brisbane street press Time Off for the past decade, I had the privilege of interviewing Grant on countless occasions. He was a delight every time and could always be relied on to say something witty and insightful. His music and songs say so much about Queensland, Brisbane and the man himself. He will be sorely missed by all. Our thoughts are with his family and friends, particularly Robert. May he rest in peace. |

We became mates in the Valley, all night Long Island Ice Teas at the bar I worked, great fun, great insight, great kindness. We lived together for four years, you, Jackie, Jamie and I. Oh what a splendid house on the river, the music the cricket, Buffy, the food and the drink and the conversation. You wrote us a song, "magic in here", and played it at our wedding. We had a daughter on your birthday and named her Tallulah. And now so unbelievably you pass away in the same house I rented when first arriving from the coast, and where, with my first guitar I learnt my first song, a Go-Betweens cover. This just can't be happening, we are so sad. Always close, forever missed Russell and Jackie Orme Ward |

Sad sad news...I've been a fan for over 20 years...the Go-Betweens have always been a guiding light--their songs have helped me understand so much about life and value art that is personal-- the complexity of the emotions described, the the filmic dreamlike poetry of the lyrics, the beautiful chord changes, the perfection of the song structures, the visual imagery, the deliberate creation of an iconography that referenced 60's dylan/ warhol/ godard as well as the romantic poets of the 19th century, the different eras of excellence, skipping the 90's entirely only to return with vigor and bold brave brilliance. what stellar performance. what commitment, command and perserverence. every music scene i have ever been a part of has been full of songwriters taking their cues from these guys-olympia,dc, eugene, san francisco, london, brighton etc. seeing their influence in cities i've visited all over the world-from brisbaine to barcelona to bordeaux. I first read about them in Distant Violins and first heard them on Calvin Johnson's radio show. I didn't see them perform, but I did see Grant and Robert twice in 1999--once in London with the Bitter Springs and then again a few months later in Seattle at the Crocodile. I took my mom to the Seattle show, she enjoyed it immensely. Tonight I am thinking of all the songs that have been inspired by the Go-Betweens and am comforted in the understanding that this chain of influence will continue. Respect and love to Grant. Strength and comfort to all friends and family. I will treasure the songs forever. Tobi-Spider and the Webs/Olympia, WA USA |

Just woke up to the terrible news. Missed the band in London this year and presumed that I would see them next time they passed through. Selfishly I'm annoyed that I never got to see the Go Betweens play live and that I won't get to hear any new material (they just kept getting better!)but in a moment like this it doesn't mean shit. I'm extrememly sorry for the loss to those who knew him and loved him and for those of us who loved his music. His legacy will live on. |

I was lucky enough to see the Go-Betweens play a number of times between 1987-1989(?) and even once interviewed Grant. He was a complex individual, but I have never ever changed my opinion about the songs that he and Robert wrote, which is that they are equal to any of the greats of modern songwriting and in some ways far exceeded the comparisons they elicited. He was one hell of a songwriter. I was fortunate to arrive in Sydney while they were still playing around town and as such remain one of my favourite bands of that formative time in my musical life. When my friend Craig called me at 10am this morning and pulled me out of my hungover bed to tell me about GW, well, I did the best I could and hauled out my Go-Be's vinyl and played a handful of tracks - Bye Bye Pride, Cattle and Cane among them, to salute one of the best songwriters this country has produced. Marvellous stuff. What a heartbreaking loss. Love to Robert, former Go-Betweens Amanda, Lindy, Robert, John, Glenn and Adele at this time, his girlfriend and family members. Rest in peace. |

I used to follow the GoBs everywhere around Sydney in the eighties and even remember a strange gig at Sweethearts in Cabrammatta (far from their traditional turf). I rememember when they played at smaller venues, talking to them after gigs as they packed up. Grant was always so friendly and approachable. 16 Lovers Lane is one of the best albums ever written...and it was so good to have the GoBs back producing great music again. This is devastating news. My thoughts go to all those close to him and to all those that loved his music and lyrics. |

Feelings go out to Grant's family and loved ones, and of course Robert. I was lucky to see pre and post 'split' Go-Betweens. To think that both Grant and Robert McComb are both no more is beyond sad and hard to comprehend. Again, thoughts go out to Grant's family and friends. |

It´s been a shock in the early Sunday morning! We are fans since the eighties and love the music of the Go-Betweens. We remember wonderful gigs: Robert and Grant at the Volksbühne in Berlin, Grant solo in the Knaack Club Berlin, several concerts of the band after the reunion… Grant was with us in some way all the time since the release of Tallulah… The last time we saw him on stage was one year ago. It was a great gig of a great band. After the show Grant signed CDs. A friendly man... We´ll remember you, Grant, thanks for all. Tatjana and Anselm Kipp |

I found this horrible news last night, from a general music forum I'm a member of. What was noticeable was just how much Grant's music means to so many forum members. Unfortunately, The Go-Betweens never sold masses of records, but if you fell for the band, they left an indelible mark on you. I heard "Cattle And Cane" in 1982, and bought "Before Hollywood" - I immediately knew this was one of the bands I'd been looking for. And throughout their glorious run of LPs in the 80s, their music became vital to me. I'm still in shock. Grant's songs mean so much to me, and I can't get used to the fact he's no longer here. RIP - my thoughts are with Grant's family and friends. |

I am totally devastated, having only just discovered Grant and The Go-Betweens a couple of years ago by accident -- how could I ever have missed them the first time around? I was fortunate to hear Grant's "Lamp By Lamp" pouring out of my radio one day and practically ran my car off the road! I called the station and begged them to tell me who this was. The female DJ was actually the program director and, sensing my desperation and complete submission to the stark beauty of Grant's music, sent me her personal copy of "In Your Bright Ray" free of charge! I have never looked back since, and have wondered how I can possibly play 'catch-up ball' to all these amazing releases. "Cattle And Cane" was so amazing I couldn't get enough listens. I was so encouraged that the group had re-formed and that I might get to see them one day, and I've done my best to spread the word to so many others completely ignorant of this catalog of great work. Hearing this news tonight was like a blow to the back of the head without warning -- this old world can be so mean and cruel sometimes. Still, I will be forever grateful to Grant and the GB's for enriching my life even further with more wonderful music and songs -- the kind of magical exhilarating feeling I get from blasting "The Streets Of Your Town" at full vol is so rare anymore.....I am so glad I found out about it even at the eleventh hour. So sad that we will have to carry on without this wonderful man. Like all the rest of you, I am beyond words....glad we have this little space here to share this painful time together. I felt quite alone tonight with the news until I found this forum. Blessings to the family and everyone else hurting way more than me right now over this :'( |

I'm very sad. Grant had a profound effect on me. Not just in the way The Go-Betweens went about their career and the music they made but also as a passionate devourer of contemporary music. Music was his life whether he was making it or consuming it. I loved talking to him about that. I walked past Rics today. The mall won't be the same. My thoughts are with you Robert, Adele and Glenn. Wow.....what a life to celebrate. |

Imagine if just 48 hours ago you told Grant that this is what we'd be doing today - shattering. Those songs, that voice are just looping around my brain all day. I hate to think of "a hole in the ground throwing dirt at the sun" for him. Then Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death." And he said: You would know the secret of death. But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond; And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour. Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king? Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling? For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. -------------------------------------------- This is dreadful news, absolutely appauling. I cannot believe it, not one bit. |

Grant & Roberts GoBs have been one of the most cheerished parts of my life. Growing up in Brisso, I was truely inspired by the passionate, moody and poetic performances around town. When I first started at UQ, the first thing I did was go into the undergrad library, looking for girl with 'Eskimo blood' in her veins. And when I was living in London, Cattle & Cane & Bye Bye Pride helped me appreciate what I'd escaped. Now in Sydney, rare performances by Grant & Robert & the GoBs have been treasured highlights for me. My sadness cannot possibly be measured against the grief of those close to Grant, but I cannot express how great the feeling of loss that I feel. A thread has been torn out of the fabric of my life, and the streets of my town are for me, lonlier. Thank you for the great art and generous performances you gave. Long live Robert. Jeff |

This is so hard to believe. We are going to miss you so much Grant. One of the greatest song writers of all time but most people just never got it. Your lyrics were magic, the best - go and have a listen to What Went Wrong - "what about the stars if you want more they're just holes in heaven's floor". Listening to 'Won't find it again' at the mo. A gem of a track tucked away on the end of a 'Best Of' double album of 100 years ago it seems. Saw them so many times over the years and most recently at Hepburn, where I had the pleasure of drunkenly blabbering to him about, what else but music and love. I forgot to ask him about the song & if he ever played it but made a promise to do so if our paths crossed again. damn these terrible things. |

Late 70s, and I remember taking my nephew, who was visiting from the UK (age 13), to Toowong Music to get him a GoBetweens single to take home. There weren't any of Lee Remick left and People Say was there but no covers ready. Grant assembled a cover stuck it together, no trouble. Grant was always the gentleman. I've only just found out and find it hard to take in, for God's sake he's younger than me. Robert and Grant's family and partner, my thoughts are with you, Much love, Jim Goodwin. |

I am deeply saddened and shocked by the news which came down the phone line last night via my friend Duglas T Stewart. Grant's music with The Go-Betweens and his inspired partnership with Robert Forster was such a rare gift in a world full of gloom ; their's was one full of truth ,joy ,light, beauty, warmth and laughter. It was this 'gift' that got me through my early years... As a student: my study periods would climax with 'rewards'...snacks and loud music to keep me going and The Go-Betweens discs armed with their vitamins, intelligence ,wit and laughter were the best perks up I need during this time and were the best brain food I needed. As a listener: After hearing Grants voice on songs like 'Batchelor Kisses' ,'Cattle & Cane','Bye Bye Pride' combined with the lyrical artisty and purity that injected straight to the heartstrings of my soul. I never quite recovered.I was hooked ! Over the years I found so much joy from records and concerts you have given with Robert and your various line-ups. For that i thank you! As a musician: It was Grant's early bass lines on Send Me A Lullaby and Before Holywood that confirmed to me what instrument I would decide to choose to perform with. The bass guitar was for me!And I had so much fine (and still do!) trying to work out those angular bass lines of Grant's full of so much invention and discovery.Once again I thank you Grant for inspiring me and igniting the flame of music within my my heart. As a friend: Although I only met Grant a handful of times, there was always an immediate bond between us and his generousity of spirit and kindness and ofcourse there would always be his his sweet, sweet smile. On The Go-Betweens last Glasgow trip I hand delivered breakfast to the group during a recording session .I remember Grant enjoying a 'potatoe scone roll' with a glass of wine at 11.30am! What a class act!A few hours later Robert and Grant would be reciting some of my words which would later be used for the last Go-Betweens single...what a thrill and honour that was! ...i mentioned to Grant that I would 'cut and paste' their reading onto one of my tracks ..Grant smiled and said he loves to be 'cut & paste'-how we laughed. He was so open minded and forward thinking and a man totally engrossed in all the various artforms ,the world of movies, books, paintings... My favouite memory of Grant was when I saw the group play at the Renfrew Ferry and as we left the venue (probably to a party knowing Grant!)we had to walk across 'the plank' and I recited to him what I pretended to be some poem of olde..'the fresh blue approach of the water'...he turned arround and looked at me puzzled (trying to work out was it Yeats?Auden?)as he was about to enquire to which poet wrote this he suddenly realise the poet was he and was one of his own lines. How we chuckled on this starry, starry Glasgow night. Grant was a true artist and his commitment to his music will always provide me with the perfect template to make music and provide a gateway to joy.I am going to miss your music ...I know the man upstairs will have a guitar waiting for you brother.Shine On and thank you for everthing my Rock n Roll Friend. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Grant's friend's and Family. At this time I am think very much of you Robert and the huge loss and pain you must be suffering. You and Grant showed me the way and I know hundred of people in this town of Glasgow who would not be making music if if were not for you both.May you find strength in this time.I tried calling you a few hours ago but I think the number was old...thinking of you... the the music of the Go-Bewteens is filling every room of our house as I write and will continue to be on repeat for the coming days. May you rest in peace Grant.Once again thanking you for everything. Sushil K Dade,Glasgow |

A little death happened inside of me today when I heard the news. I'm just an anonymous ordinary fan whom you somehow touched and made a difference to my life. So so sad. The mangroves go quiet and there is a hole in the sky. |

I first saw the Go-Betweens at the Clarendon Hotel in London (supported by Jazz butcher and June Brides). I went backstage to chat with the Butcher and saw Lindy, Robert and Grant but I was too young and too shy to say hello. I met Robert at a London solo gig some years later. I made some small talk but I'm kicking myself for not telling him this... If I could only have two artists bands for the rest of my life they would be Jonathan Richman and the GoBetwens, if I could only have one it would be the GoBetweens. I cant think of a more beautiful first line to a song "I recall, a schoolboy coming home", even before today I always have tears in my eyes. Loved you Grant... |

Who told Newton to wait for the apple to fall?... Selfishly I wonder, what will happen to the soundtrack of my life now?... From Harold Park to Petersham to Epping to Newtown to the Tivoli to Homebake 06 and so many others. Never a dud show ever. Ever. Your music will live on Grant, you are one of the best. I will miss you. Thank you. R |

I feel very very sad. Grant McLennan has been a constant in my life for over 25 years through mainly his music and on the periphery the occasional boozy catch up in the Valley. A true gentleman with a wonderful gift. 48 is far too young to die. Rest in peace man, please sing a song to my brother. |

Loving the Go-Betweens was always like being in a special club....there was never a band that inspired so much loyalty, affection and devotion in their fans. A chapter in Australian music sadly closes, a great partenership over. I can't believe I'll never experience the sheer joy at seeing the boys on stage, lifting us all out of our own miseries and discontent with that striped sunlight sound. Indeed, we won't find it again. Robbie, take care. love from a Darlinghurst girl. |

Just learned the sad, sad news. I am shocked, as everybody else is. I was lucky enough to see Grant perform with the Go-Betweens on a handful of occasions. You are going to be very much missed, Grant. Which, of course, is the mark of a wonderful man. Well done for all you achieved and thank you for touching me with words and music. You shall never be forgotten, for all the right reasons, which really is the ultimate accolade. Cheers, Grant. See you later. Gavin Fearnley - Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, UK. |

Grant, you gave Australian musical artists a chance to share emotions. This is something that could not have been done prior to your music and cannot be understated. You also made it acceptable for average Australian men to show emotions. You shared yourself with us Grant and for that I am forever grateful. There are now thousands of Australian young men who don't dream of being the next Australian Idol but dream of being the next Grant McLennan. You should be so proud of these achievments Grant. Your infuence will live on. Rest in Peace. -Rob Deal Sydney Australia. |

If I was Grant I could probably have expressed how this news makes me feel. I would laugh at the very idea of having musical idols and hate the word "fan" . But still thankyou to Grant and Rob for some of the greatest musical experiences ever. Will always remember The Old Melbourne hotel in Perth, some time in the 80's ....thankyou |

l had the great pleasure of spending time at 3RRR (Melbourne) with the Go Betweens in the studio (a few hours as an office babe on a long break). And following them around Melb. and Sydney as a great fan. Just watching Lindy's neck muscles as she played those drums was riveting. Women were'nt suppossed to do that. Such a culture breakthrough. So many great musicians came from Brisbane, why, how, or because of the culture and its cop mentality. My huge condolences to Grant's Family, Robert, Friends etc. Susan |

I'm still in shock. It seems like only yesterday that I was tending bar at Picasso's at Spring Hill when I first met you - I couldn't believe anyone that polite and unassuming coutld be a musician; and then you played one of the most awe-inspiring live gigs ever. Only a few years later, I was working at Ric's serving you those Long Island Ice Teas, and having endless conversations with you about music, film and politics, listening to your suggestions on my dodgy attempts at novels, the parties at Russ & Jackie's, the good times with Steve & Mick H, and those sunday nights when we'd see a band at the press club. I hadn't seen you much in the last couple of years, but I always expected to walk into a venue, see you singing "lighting fires" and then give you a big hug when you'd finished and pick up a conversation from years before (like we'd always done in the last couple of years). The world is a lesser place without you GW, You were the epitemy of the word Gentleman. Your old mate, Mickey E |

Grant, whenever i saw him always had a nice word of encouragement for me and my music. When i was feeling down about it, i would sometimes try and find him. Sometimes i did, most likely sitting at the bar at Rics drinking a Long Island Ice Tea. The last time i saw him, there he was perched at the bar i probably annoyed him because i told him over and over how much i loved him. He was always kind to me. i will never forget him. |

Grant you helped me through many dark days, you touched the melancholy, painted it with lyrical colours and stark melodies that spoke to me, saying it’s OK, the pain is real, it’s integral to the journey, you can’t sidestep it if you’re alive, but don’t be afraid, your life will be richer for going there, facing the demons, and coming through For The Wrong Road, Bachelor Kisses, Bye Bye Pride, The Dark Side of Town, Apology Accepted, Haunted House, The Clock, Cooked Lines, the magnificent Stones for You, and of course The Devil’s Eye Thank-you Love Goes On My thoughts are with family and friends Daryl Efron |

Tragic news and a terrible loss for music. My first ever 'proper' gig here in Ireland was REM's Green Tour and the The Go-Betweens were the support act. It's horrible news. Grant and Robert were an honourable exception to the rule that bands make worse albums when they reform, it's so sad their music is cut off in their prime. On a personal basis, I was fortunate enough to have interviewed Grant three times. On each occasion, he was a gentleman; courteous and as funny as I could have hoped for. It's devastating, my sympathies go to his family and those who knew him. |

I'm so shocked. One one of my best nights of last year was when they toured again and came to play in Brighton. I lurked at the back and smiled at how good they were. Once upon a time he came to play a few songs on my radio show and just hung around after (and before) having cups of teas with me and my (in awe) friends. (when I'm sure he had better stuff to do). Just a lovely fella love goes on. all my best to your friends and family. What a songwriter you were. |

So sorry to hear the news. As several have said already, Glasgow held the Go-Betweens in great affection and it seemed to be mutual - Grant's first words on taking the stage last year at the Renfrew Ferry were "it's good to be home" before giving a truly wonderful performance. Condolences to Grant's friends and family, and especially to Robert. RIP Grant, you will never be forgotten. |

I never met Grant, nor even saw him play (managing to cross paths with Robert only, in the early 90s) but it's profoundly saddening to think that that stream of great, great, heartbreaking songs has now been abruptly halted. I knew Grant purely through those songs (Oooh, "Unkind & Unwise" is now spinning on my mental jukebox), and they will surely persist to inspire depths of fascination and fanaticism that I hadn't previously thought possible, an endearment matched only by my twin attraction to the work of a certain Mr Forster. I'm clearly not unique in this and, like others, I find my thoughts turning to all of Grant's family, friends and colleagues. My condolences to them along with my heartfelt thanks to Grant. |

Logging on to ninemsn this morning and learning of this sad and unbelievable news will for us be one of those moments ever frozen in time. We are shocked and deeply saddened. Like so many who have already posted, that striped sunlight sound has been a constant and defining part of our lives since the early 80s ... from Baroona Hall to Livid at UQ to Easts to the Zoo, in Chicago once, Ric's and the Tivoli ... every show memorable and unique ... we played "One Plus One" and "Magic in Here" when we got married ... just a year ago we went to the CD launch at Rocking Horse, we took our children ... often seeing Grant around in New Farm or the Valley, somehow just underlined the connection ... you and your music will be so greatly missed. Our thoughts are with your family and many close friends. |

I hadn't checked the forum for a while and was just thinking I ought to do so when I got the email from the website. It's impossible to sum up my 22 years of being a fan in a few words, so I'll just say I was always - fractionally - more of a Grant person than a Robert person as regards the band's music, though the balance had probably shifted the other way in the past few years. That said, I had noted Robert comment that "Grant's got his strongest batch of songs ever" in the Stylus interview of earlier this year, and I had been looking forward to a new album next year. It's impossible to believe we'll probably not get to hear these songs as performed their writer, except perhaps in demo form. My heart goes out to Grant's family and friends, the rest of the band and Lindy and Robert Vickers. Richard |

Truely sad day. For me it was hard to believe that I would go from seeing the go-betweens in Toowoomba in the 80's, and headlining livid to being able to have a beer with Grant McLennan at Rics talking about music. WOW. Just shows the integrity and genourosity of the man. One of my favourite song writers. Cheers. |

I am shell-shocked. Obviously thoughts go out to Go-Bs past and present, friends, family and anyone touched by GW's magic. Never knew him but felt like I did. Sitting in the bar at Flinders Uni in the early 90s, some anonymous looking guy started playing acoustically in the corner to the 10 or so people there. He kicked in with 'Was there anything I could do' and the penny dropped. Unannounced, unnassuming and of course totally affecting. God, what a great memory... I just came back from a Go-B's pilgimage of sorts in Brissie. We stayed in Spring Hill for starters, hanging out in the Valley. Bought the DVD at Rocking Horse. Drove around Qld listening to the live CD. We were on Bribie when it's namechecked on Surfing Magazines - a freaky, wondrous moment. I am too stunned - thank you so much Grant. Thanks for everything. |

Tonight there are tears, sadness and sweet sweet memories. I met Grant in passing once - he was propped up at a bar in Sydney after a solo Forster gig. My heart was in my throat as I walked towards him. The man who had written the soundtrack to my teenage years and early 20's was sitting there by himself. He was amazing. Humble, shy, sweet, gorgeous. And now, years later when I sing to my 2 year old - mixed in with the nursery rhymes are Gobs songs. My son now sings Clouds, That Way and Streets of Your Town. God I loved being a Go-Betweens fan - you guys were everything. Grant - I took this chance to write a message. It's just to say that I will miss you. |

This is such a shock. I once encountered Grant in Brisbane in 1998 and told him his work meant a lot to me. I met you once and got the chance to tell you how wonderful you were and the special place that you have in my heart. Sitting outside the Basement listening to the sound check before one of the reunion gigs reminded me so much of the 80's and the integral part you played in my life and the magic you were able to provide to all those around . Whether it was Paddington RSL in the 80's,Annandale, BDO or even the last gig I saw you play at Bulli you mesmerised me. Definitely someone that I will never forget and thankyou for all wonderful opportunities and memories. 1992, Surrey UK: A week spent in my best friend's parent's house in the country whilst they are on holiday, with my two best friends (and co-band members)... waking up late, rehearsing songs, watching 'neighbours', rehearsing songs. People drop by, one of them (a crazy artist-type girl) brings a boom-box with her and is playing this quirky, organic, warm yet haunting compliation with songs about 'cattle and cane'. The music becomes the soundtrack of the week, we drink wine, smoke and talk in the evenings. A week I'll never forget. 2005: Atlanta, USA: My wife and I are driving 2 hours to get to the store to get my first tattoo done. We're listening to 'Oceans Apart' for the first time as we navigate the freeway. 'Boundary Writer' sends shivers down my spine. Thanks so much Grant (and Robert) for crafting the music that has been the soundtrack for so many special moments in my life. You will be missed but not forgotten. To his family, friends, the band (past and present) and all the fans (who i'm sure can relate completely). Love goes on. |

Just heard about Grant's passing. Can't believe it. Three weeks ago I had a coffee with him in a bookstore in Brisbane. Fifteen years ago he took me under his wing during a day trip to Sydney. A bar in Kings Cross, another bar in Paddington. He quoted Leonard Cohen. Tons of memories ... playing pool in New Farm, tennis at Cooparoo, listening to his new album at full volume in the Time Off office. A genuine artist, the person who had impressed me the most was the man. I'm sorry to see you go GW. Rest in peace. |

I bought a copy of 'Watershed' on the day my first son was born in April 1991. The memories I have of rocking him to sleep while listening to 'black mule' and 'stones for you' are precious to me. In 1993 I put off buying 'Fireboy' until my second son was born for the same reason. In fact, I think that 'Fireboy' is the greatest single Go-Betweens related release. As you may have gathered, these albums mean more to me than simply songs : they are part of a bond between me and my boys that is rekindled everytime I hear them. My fifteen year old said to me today, upom hearing this very sad news, 'you've taken this pretty hard dad'. Yes son : I have. Thank you Grant. 'Through the back fence, by the river, over stones to you'. |

Grant's song have been permanently with me for sixteen years now, since that day I bought the 1978/1990 compilation, which drove tears to the eyes of the record shopkeeper. My thoughts go to his family and his friends. |

He and Robert have always felt like old friends to me because their music has been the soundtrack to my life for the last 20 years. As soon as I found out I clicked onto my Go-Betweens playlist, and put it on shuffle. Cattle and Cane played first, then You Won't Find It Again. I cried and cried. I am a bit surprised at how much this is impacting me. I am so, so glad I got to see them live twice, especially this past tour. We had to drive 8 hours to get to the show and now I am so glad we did. My heart goes out to Robert, I cannot imagine what he is feeling right now. May God hold you in the palm of Her hand, Grant. |

I was shocked to hear the news last night. Grant's songs have meant a lot to me. I had the opprtunity to meet him briefly after some of the Go-Betweens shows in Paris and I remember him as somebody incredibly nice and friendly. I don't know what I could say that others here haven't said before, but this is a terrible loss. |

ah, grant, the more i read about all of this, the more my heart breaks. i'm so glad i saw you live; and i was just like you to play all of my favorite songs. it's a tribute to you & robert that so many replies i've read and talk i've seen come from people who were just getting into the band. i envy them the discoveries that await them. my most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends as auden writes, stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, silence the pianos and with muffled drum bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. and please, mr. funeral man, don't put any powder on his face. requiescat in pace. |

I've just heard the news & I'm lost for words. I've been a fan for years, The Go-Betweens were always unrivalled. I'm listening to "Oceans Apart" as I type, I can think of plenty of reasons to cry - especially as we wont hear any new songs from Grant. Love to his friends, family & Robert. David, Windsor |

From a small town near Barcelona, sweet tears are falling down flooding my soul of emptiness. only with 23 years on my back i can affirm they're one of most trascendental bands all around the world. Best wishes to their family and friends. I'll never forget their last performance in barcelona, past november, Grant was smiling while Robert was drinking a cup of coffe on the stage before playing the first HIT, 'cause he was deeply sleep. All my trust love to my favourite band. |

When my music tastes were first being formulated, it was the Go-Betweens who helped me hear the difference between art and commerce. Grant's songs are not only part of the fabric of my life, they are tucked away in my genes, and continue to resonate when they time is right. I have continued to speak the praises of this band, and have made many of my friends converst to Grant and the bands unique view of a world that while staggering on the brink of destruction, still has time for the quiet moments that all humans share. |

I just want to say how shocked I am by this news. Brilliant songs like 'The Wrong Road' and 'Bye Bye Pride' helped me through a lonely patch in my mid-twenties. I never met Grant, but his spirit reached out to me through the songs. Happily, I managed to see the Go-Betweens three times, the Glasgow show at the Renfrew Ferry in 2003 being one of the best gigs I have ever been to. Your music lives on Grant, there are so many of us who will continue to listen. |

I can't believe Grant has gone. I was always aware of The Go-Betweens but only really got into them when the band I drum with Teenage Fanclub played some shows in Spain together when Rachel Worth was released. I loved the next couple of albums and went back and investigated their back catalogue. Grant came into our dressing room after our show in Barcelona and said something like "At last!" and, having broken the ice in less than second, proceeded to chat away like we were all old friends. Last year we played 4 more shows in Spain together. I LOVED watching the Go-Betweens every night and getting to talk to them and giving them all a hug after the last show in Bilbao. I walked in to their dressing room and said "that was fucking brilliant" or whatever and "Everyone is getting a hug" and they all laughed and one a time all gave me a friendly embrace. A great bunch. Grant was so kind and nice and fun. I remember telling him he was a great, great songwriter and he seemed genuinely pleased - as I was pleased to be able to tell him. And I quoted a line from a Bernard MacLaverty about having "the courage to be thought pretentious". I told him this was something I thought was special about The Go-Betweens: they had the courage to be thought pretentious (not to BE pretentious but to know that they would have their accusers, yet they still be true to their art regardless). Grant really seemed to get a kick out of this. I loved "Going Blind" and I told him so. I feel so very sad we won't play anymore shows together again. That there won't be anymore songs from this great talent. My thoughts are with all the friends and family he leaves behind. And I hope Robert takes some kind of strength and comfort from the sentiments expressed on this board. |

What a shame. He wrote some great songs that held truths and stories beyond the ones they were intended to tell. And the one time I met the guy, in Chicago about a year ago, he was full of fire and life that was so at odds with this sad sad news. He'll be missed. My condolences to his family, friends, and bandmates past and present. |

I hope they can take some small comfort from the kind thoughts and memories of a wonderful man expressed on here. |

I first heard the Go-Betweens when I bought a tape of "16 Lovers Lane" in Woolworths aged 13; I was on a very dull holiday in some Northern Rainy city. The only thing I remember about that holiday was that album. I am sad that such an honest song-writing talent will no longer write any more heart-felt and beautiful songs. |

Still hasn't sunk in. I thought today that I would be able to return with something inspirational to post. Instead, tearstruck I'm reading the posts of others among the many you touched, Grant, and I feel humble to be one among them. It's disingenuous to feel sad that now I'll never meet you or even hear the stiped sunlight sound live again. Time to put something back to your family and friends 'cos they're the ones that matter now - I'm thinking of you. If there is a God, Grant, may he bless you where you are as you've blessed my life. As a teenager in drab Dublin in 1985 the Go Betweens seemed like exotic creatures from a far away land. Cattle & Cane and Batchelor Kisses had found their way over on the airwaves but it seemed unlikely that we'd ever get to experience them in the flesh. No one though could have been prepared for the record that was Liberty Belle (even it's cover was fantastic)....and as a teenager, deciding to bunk off school and walk the 6 miles to Trinity college in Dublin to see them play on a sunny afternoon could have had all sorts of imagined serious consequences. But that show, I suspect, changed more than a few lives over here and years later,as a journalist, I had the pleasure of reminiscing about it with Grant in the Central Hotel in Dublin. But really it was the records that changed everything for me, all of them, the pre-break up records, the solo records and post reformation records. Later, they seemed to be visiting Dublin as often as possible, we were so lucky on so many occasions to have them. And such a warm man, I'm sure many who knew Grant in the very very small way that I did feel they knew him a whole lot more then we really did. So thanks for all of it Grant and thanks Robert for being on the journey with him. Deepest sympathies to all his friends, relatives and fellow fans, the sudden loss puts his amazing life into stark perspective. |

Grant thank you for so many things. For making growing-up in Northern Ireland in the 1980s that little bit more bearable. For being such a gentleman when I engaged you in conversation before a Go-Betweens gig in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in '89. For some great nights in Dublin - especially the Olympia show a few years ago. You tore the place up! For the music, those songs, that have helped soundtrack my life and have begun to soundtrack the life of my two young daughters. To Robert, all my love and best wishes. Goodnight, Grant. |

I first saw the Go Betweens play the Gallery in Manchester in 1982 to a really sparse crowd. They were very down at the bar after the show. I thought they were extraordinary and told them so. They put us on the guest list for the following night in Colne (!). Over the next 25 years I never missed an opportunity to see them and they were never less than extraordinary. The night I met my wife, it was sealed over Bye Bye Pride at 4 in the morning. I have lived in Glasgow for the past 20 years and it seems so appropriate that so many great Glasgow musicians have left such touching messages. They felt part of the landscape here. My sister just phoned to tell me the terrible news. My tears stem from all the precious moments since discovering The Go-Betweens and Grant in 1996; from the greatest gig I have ever witnessed in 1997 in Dublin to all the songs that bridged my years between 20 and 30. My heart goes out to Grant's family, friends and to Robert. Grant, your songs were human, painted pictures, evoked endless emotions and made my world a better place. SO MANY memories - The go-betweens playing the quad at Long Beach State, all my friends there in support, sitting on lawn chairs & drinking Fosters Lager as bemused students stolled by. Or that night at The Roxy in Hollywood in '86 where they worked the crowd into a frenzy, I actually stage dived to the bleedin' Go-Betweens! And, of course, the night i interviewed them backsage and forgot to turn the recorder on. Lindy was pissed, but the next day they patiently sat through my questions again, this time by poolside with Robert in a speedo. Stellar band, wonderful people. Thanks Grant, for all the notes and chords and the magic. I feel I've lost a member of my family. "oh, what a trip..." |

There's one line from Grant's "Trapeze Boy" (from the first Jack Frost album w/Steve Kilbey) that's kept popping up in my head today; "It's funny how someone you've never met, manages to stay with you". Thanks for the great music Grant. All of us will certainly carry a piece of you with us always thanks to your songs. |

I was shocked to hear this news and am surprised by the sense of personal loss I feel--I'm genuinely bereft. I suppose it makes sense, though--though I never met him, Grant and his music have been a huge part of my life since the day in 1987 I first popped a cassette of '16 Lovers Lane' into the tape deck of my high school car in Delray Beach, Florida. I was overcome by the warmth and optimism in Grant's voice and lyrics. I'm so sad today, but also so grateful that I had the chance to see Grant and Robert play live a year or so before the group reformed. There was such sheer joy in that room, pouring from the guys and the audience alike. Afterward my husband said of Grant, 'He was just beaming--he looked like the happiest man on earth!' I hope he is radiating the same kind of light wherever he is now. |

I only discovered the Go-Betweens after they broke up, and my 13 year old self was gutted I'd never be able to see them play. I was estactic the day I first heard they were reforming and when I saw them play at the Zoo in Brisbane it was like my mum felt seeing the Beatles as a teenager. Living in London I miss home, but all I have to do is play one of their CDs and I am there. I will miss you Grant. |

Dublin Ireland. I still can't believe this news. Australia seems along way away but I'd like Grant's friends and family to know what a special place his songs had in our hearts. From growing up in Dublin, to moving to London in the late eighties, Grant's songs were the soundtrack to our lives. Later as a musician and songwriter in some forgotten band (Brian) I shamelessly stole his chords and riffs. My proudest moment supporting The Go-Betweens in London and Dublin in 1999. I always remember a crazy night out we had in Dublin post-gig with the legendary Irish hack George Byrne and Ivor and Brian from The Divine Comedy. Later as a journalist I interviewed Grant and he generously provided the background to so many of his wonderful lines. "His Father's Watch, he left it in the shower." Can anyone better that? So many kind and sensitive people all over the world feeling the same sadness. My kindest thoughts are with you all. I am thinking especially of Sally McLennan, who I have not seen in twenty years although I liked her so much. Grant adored her, and one of the happiest times in his life was when they shared a flat in London. He wrote "Bachelor Kisses" for her. Of course, I am thinking of Robert Forster, whose friendship and collaboration with Grant was such a rare and special thing. This must be so difficult for Karin and Robert. Emma, we have never met, but I want to thank you for making my beloved friend's life such a joy all the time you have been together. I hear that he was the happiest he had ever been in his life these past few months. Robert Vickers is very sad. He has loved and admired Grant since they were both teenagers. They had a very special bond before, during, and after Robert playing in the Go-Betweens. I always considered Grant one of my very most beloved friends. We only saw each other every couple of years since I moved back to New York. Robert and I were so very much looking forward to seeing him when we next visit Brisbane. My deepest sympathy to all Grant's family, friends, and listeners. |

I am devastated by this. This loss is absolutely immense and inexplicable. "Cattle And Cane" should be in the Louvre of songwriting, and "Boundary Rider" from the last album is just as good. And there are so many more..... I would certainly have never become a musician if it had not been for the Go-Betweens. They opened a door for me that has thankfully never closed. I talked with Grant a year ago in Vienna, and he was in fine form. It was so wonderful to see what the band had accomplished since their reunion. It was such a positive, inspiring show. It was all about the future. My heart aches for the for the great songs that will not get written and for a voice and an intelligence that can never be replaced. But more than anything my heart aches for Robert. I cannot imagine his loss. Stupidly, I never thanked Grant for the music. We should say these things when we can. Thank you Grant. "The sound of a finished kiss." Thank you Grant for your talent, humour and humiity. It was you in Edinburgh in the mid-eighties who, on the band finishing an astonishing Cattle and Cane, thanked us the audience for listening and offered the hope that we would enjoy the Knife era Aztec Camera(!) As we all know, the Go-betweens were an impossible act to follow. All the best to those you have had to leave behind, and farewell... |

I worked with him on the FOC album through my relationship with Ian Haug and had the pleasure odd drink with him. I saw him last wednesday night, this fact really blows my mind as he seemed so well. He was a renaissance man through and through. He always had such profound things to say about painting, poetry and music. He had a beautiful mind and a kind soul.... he will be missed. As middle age takes its toll, I have less and less vivid memories of the 80s. But I still remember the first time I saw the Go-Betweens like it was yesterday. It was a lunch time gig, and I had to run to get back to work on time. I recall doing so with a big smile on my face, aware that I had witnessed something rare and special. Over the years, I've seen them play countless times, and I've seen and read many interviews, and one thing that's always struck me is that Grant always came across as a genuinely nice bloke. And that to me is as important as the obvious fact that he was a genius song writer. My heart goes out to those who knew him personally - there loss is so much greater. I'm not a believer, but if I was, I could understand why God would want Grant Mclennan closer to him tonight. Wouldn't we all? |

The Go-Betweens soundtracked our lives since early teenage. During the long sabbatical we still listened to those records and bought the solo albums while hoping for a reformation. When Grant and Robert got back together we were overjoyed. We saw them in Glasgow and London. The audiences consisted mostly of 30-somethings like ourselves who knew all the words and sang along with gusto. When we heard the news today we played 'Oceans Apart',one of their finest albums, but we didn't get beyond 'Finding You'. It was too much. It's weird how you can feel so much sorrow at the passing of someone you never got to meet. But Grant felt like an old friend. We're going to miss you so much. Thankyou for the poetry, the rhythm and all those beautiful melodies. |

Unbelievable news, I was stunned when I heard it and I still am. I was fortunate to see Grant with Robert and the Go-Betweens a few times, most recently in Bilbao. On the occasions I met him he was very kind and generous. It just doesn't seem real that I will never see Grant perform again. My thoughts are with Grant's family, with Robert and the rest of the band. |

I'm shocked and saddened to hear this news. A friend called a short while ago, but even after reading these tributes I'm not sure it has sunk in....The Go-Betweens have been part of my life for 20 years and only today I was watching the video of Streets of Your Town blissfully unaware. I've loved the music since seeing them perform Head Full of Steam on the Whistle Test. Since then I've seen them many times and their music has accompanied me everywhere. Cattle and Cane always brings a tear. Grant was a truly gifted songwriter and will be deeply missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends. |

I'm deeply saddened to hear this news - a reminder to all of us of the frailty of life. I became an instant fan and proselyte for the best Aussie band ever when I first saw the Go-Betweens performing 'Apology Accepted' on the Old Grey Whistle Test in the early 80s . So many of my memories were soundtracked by their music, they touched a part of all of us such that you will never meet a 'casual' fan. The quality of the solo albums and the re-union made me take them for granted, that we'd now have something magical from them every year...sadly not to be... Thank you Grant, rest in peace. Condolences and sympathies to all you left behind. |

So out of the blue...(thank you to whoever chose the picture, and Bernard for getting the tribute up on the board so quickly)...as always its the sheer finality of it all. Like a lot of you, I never met Grant, but he provided part of the soundtrack to my life..I remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard his songs. Lord knows what Robert, Adele and Glenn are thinking right now...if losing their old mucker isn't bad enough, the band finishes as well (I spoke to Robert briefly at the end of the Hamburg gig last year, he was saying how there was so much they still wanted to do. And by the sound of it, Grant was on a roll and eager to get recording the next album) Memories come flooding back..Grant's acoustic set at the Borderline ("I've been doing a lot of reading , a lot of thinking, ..and I've been doing a lot of writing")...Camden Jazz Cafe, on the reunion tour, Robert in his yellow suit..there was one particular song of Grants they were doing, taking alternate verses (Haven't I been a Fool ?), I'll always remember the look of delight on Grant's face as he look across to see Robert singing one of the verses of his solo songs, after those years apart, that serene look (remember that same sort of look towards the end of the Barbican gig when Grant gazed across to the string quartet as if he was a fan watching ?).... Highbury Garage ("Electric at last !") Happy, happy memories... |

Back in the late 80's, in my Texas college town, record shops held magic. You could discover new bands that felt like they were yours alone. I came across an import single of "Right Here" and put it on the shop's turntable. Something amazing came through those headphones and transported me to another world. They sounded familiar. Hadn't they had a song in a Jonathan Demme movie or something? At any rate, you could immediately tell it was something special, something clever and beautiful, something sad yet joyous, something far removed from your experience, yet somehow within reach. Listening to the 7 inch made me want the album, which contained so many beautiful songs and is one of my favorites to this day. Friends and family should know he brought hours of joy to many lives across the globe. From Australia to a small town kid in Texas, and all points in between. Rest in Peace. |

From a distance, Grant always seemed a contradiction to me - a hale and hardy man onstage whose songs seemed like gossamer threads, beautiful, delicate and wraithlike. His cursedly premature passing is a reminder that it's life that's fragile and fleeting. Great art endures. My deepest sympathies to Robert and to all Grant's family and friends. I would have liked to have known him, but I'm grateful for the unparalelled music he left behind. He was a remarkable, singular talent whose work will endure as long as human beings have ears. Just got the message from a SMS by a dear friend while I was on another concert which was pale and hollow from then on. The news really struck me. Grant's songs had a place in my life for 22 years from the before hollywood lp listened to on a cassetteplayer during the whole summer of '84 until the last concert of the Go-Betweens I saw in Frankfurt in June last year. Rarely anybody else's music has stayed with me for such a long time and surely will remain in my heart and mind. I'm just thankful for that gift he made. |

I finally saw the GBs for the very first time 15 Jun 05 at the Forum, Melbourne. Accompanied by my wife (who was new to the music), we had a wonderful evening with the band...the really enjoyed themselves on stage & treated the audience to a show that was very special, played with such verve and passion. This is heartbreaking news. I never met the man, but I'm feeling an incredibly personal sense of loss. The music of The Go-Betweens, collectively and individually, is among my most cherished. I feel privileged to have seen Grant perform so many times in Hoboken and New York, a city where he and his band mates were honorary citizens among the musical cognoscenti. There's no sturdier collection of songs from the past 25 years than that of The Go-Betweens. Whether as a solo performer, in duet with Robert, as a trio with Adele or Amanda, with a full four or five-piece band, acoustic, plugged-in… the songs and performances were always riveting, always transcendent. Grant expressed so much hopefulness at the end of the songwriters forum in That Stripped Sunlight Sound… he was just beaming. I can't believe the group's story has now been told. The tributes here from those who knew him paint a wonderful portrait of the man; a friend that I never had, but from whom I received so much. Rest In Peace Grant. My deepest sympathies to your family, your band mates and to all of your friends. |

You can count on one hand the number of artists that helped shape my musical outlook more than The Go-Betweens and it's was Grant's compositions that hooked me first, that mix of the melancholy and the uplifting. "16 Lovers Lane" coincided with a difficult time in my life and was a truly a valued companion. I can still recall the delight upon finding a long-sought-after copy of "Spring Hill Fair" in a dusty used record store in Iowa City... I'm sure I'm not the only one who has those peculiar dreams of finding those sorts of "Holy Grail" albums missing from one's collections, both real and imagined, only to wake up and find it wasn't to be. In this instance, it was, and I'm not sure I've ever been more excited about a purchase of any kind since that day. Last night was spent at home with a bottle of wine and the collected works of Mr. McLennan. Bless you, Grant. |

The first gig I ever went to was a Go-Betweens gig at Easts Leagues Club, when I snuck in underage. The tour was after Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express was released, and the band made such an impact on me that I became a fan for life. "Cattle and Cane", "Karen" and other beautiful songs written by Grant, Robert and the band have always been there in the soundtrack of my life. Grant, you and your impish grin have left us way too early. I'm heartbroken that I missed your last Aussie tour, and I'll never see you perform again. The Go-Betweens were and are a HUGE part of my life. I randomly picked up "16 lovers lane" in high school in 1989 and instantly became a fan. In New York in 1998 I got to see Grant and Robert do 2 shows in one day - an acoustic session at Other Music, and then another acoustic show at Mercury Lounge. Would have been great to hear the songs as a full band, but it wasn't necessary. The songs themselves - just 2 guitars and 2 voices - rang true to everyone there. The moment they launched into "cattle and cane" you could just feel the crowd sighing. On a flight to Sydney 4 years ago - slightly delirious from 21 hours in the air - I put "bye bye pride" on my discman and suddenly the pilot announced we were beginning our descent. Thank you Grant McLennan for every word you ever wrote. |

(I posted this earlier on Steve Kilbey's blog) I hadn't seen Grant in quite a while. I didn't even realise he was back in Brisbane. When I heard the news from a friend on Sunday morning, it really didn't sink in. It was unreal, I think because I hadn't seen him in such a long time. Then my partner and I started thinking about when we were first together, and we saw Grant quite a bit. Drinks at Ric's, he was always there. Always so polite, sincere, low-key. So not an "I only talk to famous people" rock star (and I've met a few of them). He was a charming gentleman, a talented songwriter, and lovely company over an afternoon beverage. I just always thought I would bump into him again around the place, as we sometimes did - at the shops, in the street, and now I won't, and that feels... wrong, and sad, and so empty. |

Grant McLennan's songs were so much a part of my life. I can't believe he's gone. He was the first person I came across who made art out of what it was like to live and grow up in the place that I'm from - North Queensland. He sang about the sticky, salty world of mudflats and mangroves and the rain of falling cinders from cane fires at night. He helped give meaning to that place and made it OK to be bloke from there and not be afraid to show your sensitive and vulnerable side. As someone who only knew the music and not the man, I wanted to give my condolences to Grant's family and friends. I know the sadness that so many of his fans are feeling can only be a fraction of the grief and shock being experienced by you. I hope you'll gain comfort from knowing that a part of Grant will always continue to live through the hope, inspiration and meaning his music has given to so many people. |

As some of the readers here know I have been writing about The Go-Betweens for many years now in my work as a magazine editor and later as the music writer at The Courier-Mail in Brisbane. I've been privileged to know Grant and Robert and to be present on the Sunday after their last Tivoli show in Brisbane, asking the questions for the DVD documentary section of That Striped Sunlight Sound. One of the many Go-Betweens moments I will always cherish. Here is a personal piece I wrote for this morning's edition: I can't remember the first time I met Grant McLennan. It might have been in about 1981 at the Basement recording studios in Roma St, Brisbane, where The Go-Betweens were recording. I will never forget the last time we met, on Wednesday, at a film screening I hosted for the new Neil Young concert film Heart of Gold. Introducing the film, I told my one paltry Neil anecdote: that I had interviewed him on the phone, found him sweet and kind, but on the afternoon of his Brisbane concert I actually walked past him in Edward St and, in shock, neglected my chance to introduce myself. Grant chipped in: ``You should have.'' After the screening, I missed my chance to say to Grant what I had intended to: that after a year of listening I still stood by my five-star review of The Go-Betweens' Oceans Apart album, that it sounds to me as strong as any album I have heard in years. I should have. In numerous conversations and interviews I conducted with Grant, he was unfailingly enthusiastic about the arts, film, books, painting, music. In his student years he wrote perceptive film reviews. He was always mentioning that he had been to some exhibition or other, some book he had found, or would talk about two of his great loves; the music of Bob Dylan and the music of The Monkees. Loving Dylan and The Monkees was not a paradox in his world, and it said something of the kind of songwriter he became, with his love of precise yet poetic language and sharp, memorable melodies. If good reviews were dollars Grant McLennan would have been a millionaire. But his ability to write so many great songs, so many enduring songs, so many songs that cut so deep with so many people, is testament to his achievement, to the kind of life he admired and lived. An artist's life. |

So shocking and so so very sad. I'm glad I finally got to see them last year in new york. Listening to "Apology Accepted" right now; before that came "From My Lips." It's much too soon. But then, we can all only hope to create so much lasting art by the age of 48. |

May Grant rest in peace. I've just read about this terrible loss and would like to extend my sympathies to Grant's family and friends. The strange thing is that it was a beautiful day in Dublin today and while driving I was listening to Easy Come, Easy Go from Watershed. It's years since I heard it and - just yesterday - I dug it out for old time's sake. Hours later I find out about his passing. From the first time I heard the Go-Betweens, Grant's lyrics, attitude and sentiment have melted my heart. I was lucky to see the band on their last couple of Irish dates. Unforgettable performances. It was special to hear songs that mean so much to me performed live. Thanks for the magic,Grant. "Pulling Your Picture...(or album)... from a cardboard box, I'll forget you not, forget you not." |

Goodbye my best friend, my mentor, my confidante. I shall miss you with all my being. We had so much fun over the years since Joccy introduced us all that time ago. She knew that we were kindred spirits. It wasn’t just about the music. It was such a rare thing. It was like had always known you. A completely un-awkward friendship. There are so many times that we caught up after being separated because of our touring. We always took up where we left off. There are so many times I will cherish. The music.... the intelligent discussions, the silliness. You were the kindest, most gentle, warm-hearted person I have ever known. Looking on here.... you were so well loved. My heart goes out to all of his friends and family. We will see him again one day. We will find him by following the sound of his foot stomping to keep time to his wonderful guitar on whatever veranda he may be sitting on. I can still hear that sound now. .... And his hearty laugh. His giant hearty laugh! This is such a shock to me. I saw him just hours before he passed away. He has been so happy and healthy recently. More than ever! He was so proud of his girl Emma, and so keen to make new music with the Gobies. He was so excited to be throwing a party with all of his close Brisbane friends. He had made the place looking immaculate. We had so many things we wanted to do together. Although my little girl Ruby will never get to know you now.... she will hear how much Georgie and I love you throughout her life.... and she will end up loving you too. I wish you could hold her again. Goodbye my friend. See you in the next chapter. I love you. Ian, Georgie and Ruby. |

Thank you Grant. Thank you so much for all those years of wonderful music, great gigs, for being part of the soundtrack of my life. It was only a few months ago that I last saw the Gobies (at Homebake) and there was just such joy onstage and off. Those kind of memories last for ever and I am so grateful to have been there and so very sad that I can never have that again. Grant, you will be sorely missed. To Robert and to Grant's family, you have my heartfelt sympathy. |

Heard the news last night via an announcement from Dave Graney at a small Fitzroy pub residency he is doing with Clare Moore at the moment. I sat stunned and non-believing as Dave reflected on Grant; they then played "You Wanna Be Loved". Very sad. |

i met him in london twenty four years ago - a young new zealand journalist amazed to find a 'rock star' who was so welcoming and polite. and who wrote such beautiful, intimate, and yearning songs. i heard cattle and cane and i wanted to go home to summer...'the sky a rain of falling cinder'...has anyone ever written a more beautiful line about Queensland's heat? he didn't write songs - he wrote letters. a great man is on the wing. heartfelt condolences to his family and robert. |

I am so upset, i regard the go-betweens as the greatest band ever to come out of Australia, i was in rapture with every gig from over 20 years ago to 6 months ago, this is such a loss. You inspired me all thru my life and you will be greatly missed. |

The Go-Betweens were the very first band I ever saw live, not that I had heard of them at the time (they were supporting REM Dublin '89). They outshone that particular great band on the night, I remember them as such a unique looking group as well as talented & I picked up my first Go-Be's record a couple of days later, followed by many others, group & solo over the years. I was fortunate enough to see them live again in Dublin after they reformed & so glad that I did. RIP Grant. |

I woke up this morning to the shocking and sad news. My husband and I were just at a wedding yesterday and struck up a conversation with a guy that had never heard of the Go-Betweens. (He bore a terribly striking resemblance to Robert Forester). We spent over an hour telling him about the band and the many great records they have recorded. All day we've been listening to those records, and all of his amazing solo ones as well. Grant. Is there ice in heaven? |

What a shame - with the band starting to get some recognitinon here at home. I've been listening to all my Go Betweens albums this morning, and while it's depressing to think that they will be with us no longer, those recordings are his afterlife. Thanks Grant. |

Sad and stunned, I'm another Brisbane boy a long way from home, feeling every mile tonight. Like so many, the GoBs and Grant's solo work were a major part of the soundtrack to my twenties. The gradual reformation, first Grant and Robert playing together, then putting together a new version of the band was a joy to witness, giving hope to all of us that sometimes memories can be recaptured, equalled, and perhaps even bettered. Seeing Grant and Robert and Adele and Glenn recently here in San Francisco in such fine form is now a memory to be treasured all the more. My condolences to friends and family, from someone who never knew Grant personally, but was touched by his work and spirit. I hope you can take comfort in this legacy. |

I came to the Go-Betweens late--first heard "Streets of Your Town" on the radio in 1988--but they soon became one of my favorite bands. Since then I've spent many joyful hours listening to, singing, and playing Grant's songs. They were a part of some of the happiest times of my life...I think of a trip from Heidelberg to Vienna with a woman I'd just fallen deeply in love with, and Grant's songs playing throughout the drive. His music has never seemed more appropriate than it did since I moved to San Francisco--times spent at the coastline, feeling the sun and wind and hearing the crash of the waves, with "Sea Breeze" playing on the stereo. Those songs of simple beauty have never gotten old for me, and I don't imagine they ever will. Sadly, though, there won't be any more. Goodbye, Grant, and thank you. When I heard this news yesterday morning I was stunned. I still haven't stopped thinking about it. As a fan since the mid-eighties, I have many Go Betweens moments to cherish; not the least of which is seeing Grant at The Gov in Adelaide just last July. Condolences to the families and real friends, and to Robert especially, who must be bleeding. Love to you all. No memories wasting here. |

I don't think it's included in the gigography but the Go-Betweens played Greece too once, in the late '80's. Well, 16 Lovers Lane was still fresh! However I was a teenager knowing from day one all the words to the newies and I'll never forget Grant's smile when I could lip-syng(sic) some words off Quiet Heart he himself couldn't remember!! 2006 became even dustier! I loved you, Grant and I'm so angry with some certain someone up above... |

To put it simply, listening to the music of Grant McClennan and the Go-Betweens is good for the soul. Music which is both melancholy, optimistic and always beautiful. I bought my first go-betweens album 16 years ago and it has been with me through all of the peaks and troughs of my early adult life. So many great memories.....Love is a sign, Cattle and Cain, The Wrong Road, Boundary Rider.... I never knew you Grant, but goodbye to a true artist....and thanks heaps... JH |

I am deeply saddened with the news I can't begin to tell you what an important band they were for me. At a time when the TV and radio was full of Pseudo Echo, Madonna, the Choirboys, Cold Chisel, etc there were a couple of bands that seemed to have come from somewhere deeper emotionally, who's music was delicate and charming, witty and warm. The Triffids from Perth and the Go Betweens from Brisbane. I used to go and see them back in the old days, but I think they didn't tour Adelaide much spending most of their time overseas (I think the first SA show was in 1986). One of the most memorable times I saw them was at Thebby when along with the Hoodoo Gurus they were the support acts for REM in 1999 - what a show! The reformed band appeared at the Big Day Out in 2001 and I remember tearing myself away from the insanely compelling antics of Rammstein to get over to the Attrium stage and as I came into earshot I got the most wonderful sensation as the Go Betweens harmonies swept over me and it all came flooding back to me how much I LOVED THIS BAND! I missed their last gig in Adelaide last year (I had a gig of my own) which I now deeply deeply regret.I did get to see them a few times in the later years for which I am extremely thankful. I met Grant on several occasions and he was always so friendly and humble, it was always a pleasure. My thoughts are with his family, friends and bandmates today. Thank you Grant, for making such a huge contribution to the soundtrack of my life, the world will be a poorer place without you. |

I heard the sad news yesterday via an early morning text from the other side of the world. I am still deeply shocked. Australia has lost 1 of its greatest singer/songwriters of all time. The world has lost 1 of its greatest – full stop ! Over the past 25 odd years I have been lucky enough to have seen Grant play with and without various Go-B’s lineups numerous times here in Sydney. So many wonderful shows and memories … the ol’ Tivoli, the Venue at Dee Why, an-instore signing at Palings launching 16 Lovers Lane, the Grant & Amanda shows, supporting REM at the Hordern on Robert’s birthday in 89, playing solo at the 3 Weeds pub in a double billing with Dave McComb [sadly now long gone too], playing solo before Concrete Blonde at Selina’s, cheekily dedicating Bye Bye Pride to Morrisey at a solo Sunday arvo pub gig at the Annandale, that special 1999 reunion tour with Robert, a low key Hopetoun gig with Grant’s then Brissie band Tomboy, the Metro shows in recent years with the new Go-B’s band … 11+ years ago when I got married, my wife Ashlea chose to walk down the aisle to Bachelor Kisses … It’s still our fave Go-Betweens song. We chatted about that with Grant over a beer or 2 at the Hopetoun a few years later and he was genuinely touched that someone would choose his song to get married to. Thanks Grant for all the wonderful songs, records, shows, memories! In those you will truly live on forever … And thanks for Horsebreaker Star – 1 of the greatest albums of all time ! Heartfelt sorrow to Grant’s family and to those closest to him and of course to Robert. Ride on black mule … How I will miss your quiet, quiet heart |

The Go-Betweens always made me feel proud to be from Brisbane. Although I don't live there anymore whenever I hear a go-betweens track I am transported back to Brisbane, to the Spring Livid, to a dodgey pub in noosaville, to their first gig in the valley in 1996 after breaking up. I have seen them many many times and everytime was always memorable. My thoughts are with Grant's friends and family. Thanks for the gift of your wonderful music! |

Music has the quality to become the soundtrack to your life; so it was with me and the Gobs and Grant's solo work in the 80's and '90s. His death, then, makes it seems as if a part of you has died. At his best Grant had the ability to encapsulate in a song a feeling or an emotion that could either buoy you up or break your heart. His partnership with Robbie was one of those synergistic affairs that are so much at the heart of creative endeavour. He may be gone, but we'll always be in his bright ray. |

I remember being mesmerised by the sight of Grant as I stood against the stage at (all) their local shows when I was in my late teens. A year or so ago, in my late 30s, I almost missed seeing them when they came back here - now I'm doubly glad I made it. In a way, I feel like we grew up together. So sad to think he's not around anymore. "It's cold and dusty in here" |

It is heart-breaking that Grant has passed on. I first saw The Go-Betweens at the Hotel Manly in 1983 and soon after I moved to the UK. I was able to see both the band and Robert and Grant on their own on many occasions and each was a memorable experience. Consecutive nights at the Jazz Cafe in Camden were fantastic. With David McComb of The Triffids also passed away too early this is the end of an era. God bless you, Robert. |

I was devastated to hear this news last night and am still struggling to come to terms with it this morning. Grant's music has been a big part of my life since I first saw The Go-Betweens in London in the mid 80s. He was a great songwriter - one of the best. His songs were poetic, profound and unashamedly romantic. He had an extraordinary gift for melody. But above all there was a humane sensibility at work in all his songs and performances. Songs like Cattle and Cane, Bachelor Kisses and Finding You are part of an outstanding legacy that will stand the test of time. So many great concert memories - from the first time I saw the band at New Merlin's Cave in London in 85 to this year's 'Story of The Go-Betweens' show as part of the Sydney Festival in January. For now the memory I cherish most is from the Homebake festival in Sydney last December. Robert smiling across at Grant as he belted out a sublime version of Bye Bye Pride in the bright sunshine. Such a happy vibe. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, especially to Robert who must be doing it tough. The mutual respect between these two guys was inspirational. I remember a Robert solo concert in London in the late 80s where he invited Grant on stage for the encore version of Clouds - 'Old friends are the best friends' he said, and meant it. |

I stopped writing my own songs when I was 20 because I thought I wasn't any good. I stopped doing a lot of things because I thought I wasn't any good. After discovering--really discovering--the Go Betweens quite late (about 2001). I resumed writing. To see these wonderful people perform I went on my first trip (to Paris 2003). Amazingly they wound up playing at the legendary but tiny Troubadour an extremely short journey down the street from me in 2005. I was too much in awe of either Robert or Grant to try to meet them. But Grant did gamely play the intro to "Friday on My Mind" when I offered it as a request. At an improbably late stage in life, I began to live. And only because of these two wonderfully touchable people, Grant and Robert. I don't really grasp that Grant is gone. Poor Robert. |

Can't believe this yet.... condolences to Grant's family and friends from a New Zealand fan. As someone before said the music of the Go-Betweens and Grant's solo stuff has been a large part of the soundtrack to my life for the past 20 years... I have memories of a couple of live shows and of meeting Grant once to cherish. I'll also be sure remember where I was on 6 May 06 - by weird coincidence I was in Brisbane - thinking about the Go-Betweens as I wandered around the streets of their town and shopping for those hard-to-find Go-Betweens and GW McLennan releases at Rockinghorse Records... Thanks for the songs and the memories. |

I'm gutted... just heard and just about ruined my otherwise perfect day. Have been a huge fan for aeons... summer 94<i> i flew from sf to Seattle to visit a friend. About 20 minutes into the flight, i realised the guy sitting two rows in front if me looked just like Grant, and I thought little of it. As my friend was driving us back to her place, the DJ on the local college station said Grant had just flown in from sf and was playing an unanouced gig at a cowboy bar in west seattle. Needless to say, we went... and... I'm still in love. Horsebreaker Star live acoustic, totally unexpected, on vacation... oh crap... I'm gonna cry... peace be with you man love you man |

To hear any of Grant's music is to feel again the thrill of having discovered it. Great songs are like secrets that you realize you knew all along, and great songwriters confide in you and then tell you it's OK to spread the word. Grant told me a lot, and his songs seemed to hear me answer, too. Thank you, Grant. |

So much love expressed here, for a lovely man with a giant heart. How strange to see a strong spirit seem as ephemeral as a flower's bloom--but then, flowers don't live on like Grant's words and melodies will. I rode my dumb little kid's bike along the wilder part of the L.A. River today, hearing Go-Betweens songs in my head and seeing egrets and cormorants and geese and darting swifts and, strangely, one little escaped cockatiel that nearly let me pick him up before he zipped across the water for the other shore. Sympathy and strength to Robert, Adele, Glenn & Grant's family, and to everyone who feels this loss. |

Dating back to 1986 I have seen the band play and their music was essential to many situations of my life as well as for sentimental education. Most things I know I have learned from pop music, so I have learned a lot from Grant Mc Lennan. Last time I saw them, in Lucerne on October 29, he seemed to be in such great shape. He talked about how he loved the place and touring in cities where the band never was before. He will be painfully missed, and it is hard to accept that there will be no more new songs. |

Grant, I only knew you as a friend for a year, and not well enough. But you were already a true and trusted friend. Your music, however, has been a friend for decades and I'm still much more in awe of McLennan/Forster than Lennon/McCartney. What an irony that only now, in your death, is Australia giving your artistry the credit it deserves. I can't believe I only saw the G-Bs perform twice, once your last concert before the first break up in Petersham and secondly your last Brisbane concert (buy the DVD, folks, it's a classic). But I was honoured to have you play your songs on your beloved guitars around our living room and on the back deck (a true Brisbane scene) and hear you and Robert rehearsing in the kitchen (Surfing Magazines was great after breakfast). And I was there hearing all the various mixes of Oceans Apart and comparing cover designs as they came in the mail. You were SO excited. Thanks for sharing that, old man. I know you were happy when you went, never happier I'd say, with your "golden period" of composition in full flight and Emma to share life with. So very sad you're gone. But your art will live with us forever ... and what more could a great artist want. Thanks you for everything you gave us all. So sorry you didn't make it to your party, because it would have been a good one for sure. Rest in peace ... and be assured, we're all still listening |

A strange thing happened a couple of years ago when I realised that although I have loved Robert's songs for so long, and always will,it was actually Grant's songs that stayed with me on a daily basis. They were the tunes that I hummed as I walked along the street or sang along to badly in the car. They were the ones that made me smile and laugh and confirmed how special music could be. Thanks Grant and I hope that the Long Island Ice Teas are to your liking wherever you are. |

From the other end of the world a very sad good bye to the modest man with the brilliant songs, it is gettting a rather sad tiome because you start sending messages like this more and more regularly, the first generation to pass away publicly with condolence books all over the planet. Best wishes and a lot of strength for the friends, families and other band members ! A fan since 1982, I have followed Robert and Grant record by record and there is such a vast number of "gems" hidden that it is amazing they did not get "huge". To me the way Grant left was typical for his life. RIP Grant - wait, please wait, don't rush of , you won't be late.... |

One of the best gigs of my life was seeing The Go-Betweens at the MilkyWay ,Amsterdam in '88.Lucky enough to have caught them in recent years too. Beautiful music and beautifully honest lyrics - the music is what it's about for us fans. Many thanks for that. R.I.P Grant McLennan. |

When I heard the news on Saturday I remembered the few hours I spent with you and the years I spent with your music. I remembered Robert saying, "We'll be back soon" and how enthusiastic he was about your new songs and I hope they will be played some day. Thank you for everything, I'll miss you and I don't think doing interviews and writing about music will ever be as much fun as it was when you were around. Condolences and sympathies to Grant's family, his girlfriend, Robert, Adele and Glenn. Maik |

I spoke to Grant once, about my project to reissue David Nichols' book as an Italian edition. He talked to me a lot and was really nice and kind to thank me, perhaps not convinced to have become an international rockstar. In such occasion I understood how he was a really great man, not only an outstanding artist. Peace to his family, to his band and all his other friends. |

I had but one chance to see the Go-Betweens play live, and that was back in 1988 at my university orientation in Dunedin, NZ. I’d been a keen fan since “Liberty Belle” and was curious to see how they would sound out of the studio. Time and Speights™ cloud the memory, but I do recall thinking they were pretty damn suave – certainly compared to some of the indier-than-thou local bands I was into at the time. Robert had that quirkily debonair thing going on, while Grant came across as more of a sweet-natured lad-next-door. Going by the comments of all the folks on this message board, he really was pretty much as he seemed, and I can only envy those who were lucky enough to know the guy. By coincidence, just the other day I unearthed some creaky old compilation tapes with solo GM and RF tracks. As my girlfriend and I drove through the sunny hills of Tottori in western Japan, I found myself humming along and smiling at the always-warm and always-witty lyrics. Timeless, Grant’s songs will live long in the memory. For what they are worth, my sincerest condolences go out to Grant’s family and friends, but especially to Robert. You two made magic together. My thoughts are with you now and through the sad days ahead, and I hope you find the belief and tenacity to keep the Go-Betweens spirit alive. This world needs all the droll and lovely songs you’ve got to give. John B Osaka, Japan |

I posted already but I'd just like to recall this story. A few years ago around the release of "Bright Yellow Bright Orange" I was in Brisbane. I bought the album. I then hired a car and drove to Rockhampton on route to Yeppoon for a friends wedding. As it was the only CD I had it was on constant play for the full journey.(Around 800 miles I think). Myself and my wife thouroughly enjoyed that drive(apart from the speeding ticket). I only just found out Grant was born in Rockhamton. Thank you Grant, for the music. |

A fan for years, I had the pleasure of meeting Grant for the first time in 2000 when he and Robert decided to reconvene the band. I was working for the NME, and their label boss Bernard MacMahon introduced us. To my absolute delight, we got on really well and hung out whenever he came to London. He even came by my house once, which was one of the most exciting and terrifying days of my life. My hero! On my sofa! Grant was a charming, funny, intelligent, passionate person, a joy to be around. Sometimes it was easy to forget you were having a great time with the bloke who wrote 'Cattle And Cane', 'Love Goes On!', 'Apology Accepted', 'Bachelor Kisses' - let's face it, the man was a genius. They say you should never meet your heroes. Well, in this case, 'they' were wrong. Grant, thanks for the music and for being such a wonderful, wonderful person - you will ALWAYS be my hero. My thoughts are with Grant's family, friends and the band. Rest in peace friend. Alan |

Grant's life is a great source of inspiration. He was a poetic soul who loved music, literature and cinema. Until he met Robert, he had probably not give much serious thought to being a musician. Despite not playing an instrument, he learned "on the job", you could say. The Go-Betweens were a real DIY endeavor throughout the 1980s. Despite the many difficulties, Grant found in music the calling of his soul, the ability to express himself and move people deeply, to contribute something substantial to their lives. Through his music he combined his love for image, sound and writing. He found his voice and we loved to listen. He took a risk becoming a musician. Most don't make it after the enthusiasm wears thin. But Grant had a calling. It was not easy, but he found happiness through it. He found his dharma, so the lack of immediate success didn't deter him. He found his fulfillment in sharing his life through song, and encouragement in the response of his fans. He died too soon, but he lived richly as we can see from the testimony of his friends and fans. So many of us are afraid to find our calling in life and take the risks of pursuing it for fear of failure, or insufficient success. Grant embraced life, and through his friendship with Robert embraced the calling of his romantic, poetic heart. Whatever is that thin thread of happiness in our hearts, we should find and follow it as Grant did. Thank you, Grant, for all the heartfelt songs that have moved me so deeply and for giving me, in your departure from our mortal view, the chance to reflect on your life and try to obey that thread that I have postponed following. |

Having followed the boys for the last quarter of a century and more, I fulfilled an ambition last August by meeting my heroes at Joe's Waterhole in Eumundi. I was living the dream in Australia having moved over from England. I couldn't believe that The Go-Betweens were playing in Eumundi so just had to see them. Boy, were they fantastic. And to top it off I met Grant and Robert afterwards for photos and autographs. They were so nice. Grant interrupted his post-concert chats with friends and relatives to chat with me, and my photo with him (which I've just been looking at) is one of my most treasured possessions. As my in-laws in Australia texted me the news, 'Spring Rain' was playing on the TV as part of the soundtrack to the movie 'Something Wild', I kid you not. I stood there with my signed cover of 'Oceans Apart', my wife had just bought me 'That Striped Sunlight Sound' DVD for my birthday, and 'Spring Rain' was on the TV. And I couldn't believe that one of my heroes was gone. I am so, so, saddened. A part of my life has gone. All thoughts and love to Grant's family and friends, and especially to Robert. You were both so nice to me in Eumundi. David |

Only found out about this really sad news just before setting off for work this morning. I just had time to put aside the Josh Rouse CD and grab 'The Go-Betweens 1978-1990' compilation and proceeded to play 'You Won't Find It Again' on repeat all the way into work (and all the way back in the darkness - a double shift). Inbetween putting on films today different Go-Betweens songs would pop into my head and I'd momentarily stop and think 'Christ, he wrote that one as well'. I remember first taking notice of The Go-Betweens on The Whistle Test in 1986 when they played live on the show. It wasn't until a year later that I really fell for them after Andy Kershaw played 'Bye Bye Pride' on Radio 1 from the just released 'Tallulah' album. It wasn't just Grant and Robert's music that drew me in but the imagery of their lyrics. Every song was a mini film script. I loved all that C86 jangly stuff at that time (still do!) but those records would generally be about boy loving girl etc. i.e. naive but sweet. The Go-Betweens music inhabited a much bigger, colourful, mysterious and more interesting world altogether. My favourite ever GB's show was at The Forum in London 97. It was a jukebox of an evening. Since then I regularly made the pilgrimage to all of their London shows onwards - Shepherds Bush Empire, The Astoria, Barbican etc. It had become a yearly ritual for me. Just wondering which Go-Betweens album to play now, probably all of them. Janice Long has just mentioned Grant's death on the radio and is about to play one of his songs in tribute. Whatever she decides to play you just know you'll be transported off somewhere magical upon hearing it. What a truly great writer and, judging by the good people on this board, it seems like he was a genuinley nice bloke. No surprise there. I feel for his family and friends and, like everyone else, my thoughts are with them. (She's played 'Finding You'. It's never sounded better). |

Condoleances to Grant's friends and family. And to Robert and the band. Who'd thought that the Go-Betweens would end this way? I once discovered the band through the Cattle and Cane single and became a fan immediately - and have been since then. Grant McLennan wrote some of the most beautiful songs in the great catalogue of Go-Betweens essentials. I have spent the last day remembering all those songs, afraid to put a record on. |

Now there will be no more "Forster/McLennan" Songs (!!); Grants songs are forever, so - in a way - he lives on. Rememer "Cattle and Cane"? Waht a great song. Grant, we miss you. Grant was a true gentleman who continued to follow his muse throughout his songwriting career. His contributions to the last Go Bees album were among his best. I agree with the eariler comments that the Go Bees expanded the horizons for what an Australian band could be - one determined to place itself within the global music community but to continue to draw on themes and images that were unmistakeably Australian. I saw the GoBees two times in recent years here in Denmark - they had many fans here in Copenhagen and in Southern Sweden - some in their late-30's like myself but also many younger fans who had discovered them through the more recent albums or via word of mouth. It was a revelation to see so many Scandinavian fans of the band singing the words to the songs - even to I Need Two Heads and others from the early 1980's. Grant's - and the band's - legacy are secure. |

I'm shocked and sad after getting the news. It's a bit discouraging to know, once more, that a life can end like that, so abruptly... I've seen the Go-Betweens two times, last year in Valencia and two years ago in Barcelona. They were fantastic. Grant was such a great composer! I listened to their records since I was a child; my father used to play them a lot, on the car, at home. I was really happy when they re-formed the band, because I was too young for the eighties (i'm 23 now) but this music never gets old. You just can't go wrong with them. I don't care about being "uncool" if I have music this inspiring, honest, and human. I'm sad that I'll never get to see them anymore, but you know, Love Goes On. "Arguably Australia's greatest pop group ever...". I should say: "Arguably one of the best pop groups ever". |

A thread from my life's tapesty has been ripped out. His music permeated through my teenage and adult years, and the revival of the duo with Robert made me realise that there's always a chance to tap into the source again in middle age. It's profoundly sad. When I had only known of the band for a couple of years, and was constantly listening to the blue 78-90 comp, I was reeling at "Bye Bye Pride" and "This Girl Black Girl" .. It was like hearing "Stuck Outside of Mobile" those first couple of times, the dense, specific images on beautiful music made me go "I didn't know music could *be* like that..." |

No Australian band means more to me than the Go-Betweens. I still think they are the Australian band I saw live the most times and are the certainly the band that has influenced me most in my life, both in terms of shaping my musical taste and in terms of informing my fumbling, amateurish attempts to form a band that somehow tapped into that articulate, fragile and beautiful world they created. And in the end we got to support them once in Melbourne, which was really what I wanted to be in a band for. For a quiet, outsider, migrant boy growing up in the wilds of outer Melbourne, Grant and Robert’s music opened up the whole world to me. My heart wouldn't know what it knows without them. And over the years I have always found myself coming back to those beautiful records. It’s saddest that this should happen once their value and true worth in Australia’s musical history was finally being understood and appreciated. (and as they were making some of the best music of their lives!) To Robert and all of the members of the go-betweens past and present, to Clinton and to Grant's family, my deepest sincerest condolences.....And Grant, thank you. |

Some of the greatest and happiest gigs i have ever been to. We saw them at King Tuts a couple of weeks before we got married (my husband asked them to be our witnesses at our run away wedding in NY but they couldn't as they weren't there on the right day but they gave us their contact details in NY.) we saw them the day after we got married at the Bowery Ballroom, a fantastic wedding present. The last time we saw them was at the Renfrew Ferry where I sat at the back 8+ months pregnant with a huge grin thinking if my child can hear this what a great start to life. What sad news but what amazing memories we all have. Grant McLennan truly enriched our lives. My thoughts are with his family and friends. |
