There was a previous posting re Australian writers and Andrew McGahan's "White Earth" was mentioned favourably. I was very impressed with it when I read it and recommended it to other people who thanked me for doing so. Because I work in a public library, I like to promote reading. It is of interest to our borrowers as we live only an hour or so drive from the setting of the novel. Bottomline, McGahan has won the Miles Franklin Award which is Australia's premier literary award worth $42,000. I would like to add an address for an interesting radio transcript where McGahan says that the arts will florish as a response to the current Austn social and political climate. http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2005/s1399773.htm |

I am half way through the White Earth at present. It is a very well-written book that delves into lots of Australian history and culture. Not sure how much overseas readers would relate to it, but it may provide some insights into the state (Queensland) the Go-Betweens emerged from. |
