Woo hoo! The Finn Brothers are playing too Frank. A better link is www.homebake.com.au

I've only been once, in 2002, and loved it. I'll be returning this year.

There's a rumour circulating that the 'real' Saints might be playing at Homebake. Y'all know what I'm talking about.

I think I heard it from the same person who said that Television and the Stooges were going to play at the last BDO.

The Saints are coming out in November for a club tour as well, with Marty Willson-Piper on guitar (I think).

Chris Bailey is also playing a few solo shows in Australia later this month.

Love that rumour. I'd been thinking that I don't think I could watch an Ed-less Saints.

Chris Bailey was great at Homebake two years ago if only for the one song ('Bring it on') with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. One could only wonder at what a full blown Bailey could do with Ed Keupper behind him and Ivor Hay.
I saw the original Saints once in 1983 on a reformation gig at Noosa Heads at the ripe old age of 15.
It was mesmerising not only for it's arrogance but it's sheer power and fuck you attitude.
Unfortunately I missed the recent run of shows by Ed Keupper & Jeff Wegener but from all reports they were amazing.
Homebake will cook bigtime this year with The Dirty Three (new record out October called 'Cinder'). The Go Betweens and the aforementioned 'Saints'.
All we need now is for the Laughing Clowns to reform just to blow everyone right out !!

Little known fact, Ed Kuepper played bass in the latter-day Saints for a short tour - can't remember the year exactly, but mid-80s... perhaps this is the tour you're talking about, Todd?

I'd love to see a Clowns reunion, but with members either dead or scattered around the country and globe, I can't see anyone forking out the money to make this wish come true.

A lot of people thought Ed and Jeff would never play together again - but they are, so who knows. It kind of helps that they both live in Brisbane.

Anyone see the band at the Homebake show? The review in the Australian makes it sound like a very interesting show:

"...Robert Forster took leave of his Go Betweens dressing room to join Melbourne's Architecture in Helsinki for one song. The latter group's horn section later joined the Go Betweens on stage during the Brisbane outfit's spirited effort on the Dome Stage, crowned by their recent single Here Comes a City."

Wait - - here is a report on Robert's eyewear from the Sunday Telegraph. Other than the eyewear, any report of the show itself?
----
Lead singer a shade groovy

The Go-Betweens' Homebake appearance was memorable -- not least for lead singer Robert Forster's decision to sport sunglasses for the event.

The theatrical Forster, who was known to frock up for gigs in the late-1980s, told the crowd it was the first time he had worn shades on stage.

The eccentric fellow told me afterwards he had already knocked out two songs for The Go-Betweens' next album -- A Place To Hide Away and Did She Overtake You?

Calling all readers on this thread- when the Go-Betweens performed at Homebake (and I'm pretty sure all of you went), did Grant and Robert drag out their one-time trademark Rickenbacker guitars-the ones they used a lot in the '80s?

The Go Betweens were fantastic at Homebake.

They came on about 3pm in bright sunshine to a surprisingly large crowd containing a good cross section of older fans (like moi) and curious youngsters. Robert was in a buoyant mood. Opening line: "This is the first time I've ever warn sun glasses on stage - and it feels GOOD!!'.

The 50 minute set was a tight and punchy mixture of old and new. Highlights included 'Head Full of Steam', 'Bye Bye Pride', 'Finding You' and 'Steets of Your Town'. The horn-section from Architecture in Helsinki joined them on stage for an excellent version of Darlinghurst Nights - the horns really filled out the sound. But the real high point for me was 'Here Comes the City', introduced by Robert as 'the last song we will play this year'. The most energetic version I've heard yet with Robert going demented at the end. The crowd loved it. A great way to end the set.

The whole band were in good form and clearly enjoying the novelty of playing an outdoor festival. I can't speak highly enough of Adele Pickvance's contribution to the band. In my opinion she is the best bass player the band has ever had. And her backing vocals complement Robert and Grant's voices beautifully.

Other highlights of the day for me were: Wolf and Cub - great young band. Can't understand why they aren't bigger than Wolfmother who sound like a bad version of what Uriah Heep were doing 30 years ago - and that is very very bad; COG - intelligent, tight, industrial metal; The Saints - the new trim-line Chris Bailey has still got it!; The Finn Brothers - a crowd-pleasing set with a great backing band including some-time Beck and REM drummer Joey Warnonker.

To Brook Crowley above - sorry, no idea if they were using their '80s Rickenbaker guitars or not.

I missed just about everything at Homebake due to work comitments. But I did arrive in time (late in the day/evening) to catch the mighty Dirty Three.
Warren Ellis was in full blown Ned Kelly mode replete with beard & his sonic wand of a instrument. Mick Turner & Jim White were laying some serious electricity, while Warren Ellis continues to morph into a violin playing hybrid of Bon Scott, Jimmy Page & Hendrix.
Their new songs "Flitter', 'The Zither Player' & 'Amy' all swung hard while interspersed with classics such as 'Everything's Fucked' & a scintilating finale of 'Sue's Last Ride'.

I'm sorry I missed the Go Betweens but January's Sydney Festival performance beckons and the Dirty Three by all acounts won't be back in Sydney till mid 2006.
If you live in Melbourne do try to get along to their shows in early January.
