Hello - as I am working with Camera Obscura and I know Grant gave them a spin when he was DJing in Edinburgh a while ago, I thought I'd post a link to their new site - www.camera-obscura.net

Looking forward to playing some shows with Robert & Grant & co in Spain in a few weeks!

-Francis (Teenage Fanclub)

I've just been listening to Underachievers Please Try Harder  by Camera Obscura and it's a great album, one I think Go-Betweens fans might really appreciate.

Go on, give it a spin, it's great (no, I don't work for them)

Oh, and the last TFC was great too

Abigail, you could be right there. What if the Go-Betweens sand one of its songs in concert? What would be the one for them?

Suspended From Class could have been written by robert. the 1st verse goes something like

You're such a beautiful writer
that's not all you are
I'm sorry about making a pass
It was subtle but I think that you grasped
The meaning intended
I can be a friend to you
I won't pretend to you
I'm not interested in breaking a heart
It's not love no it's nothing like that
Ill leave that to lookers like him
Oh he's such a delicate thing

or 80's fan which is lovely piece of indie nostalgia. i'll print the whole lyric coz i thinks its cool

You know it really wont surprise me
If you're a wreck by the age of fourteen
The way you look
The way you look is fine

So often colour coordinated
your sister she's an Eighties fan
But that's alright
Have I told you so is mine

You say your life will be the death of you
Tell me, do you wash your hair in honey dew?
And long for all of them to fall in love with you
But they never do

Drinking vodka on the fly
Your mother has a watchful eye
So look out kid
She's onto you this time

Run away to a bed and breakfast
Console yourself with the Reader's Digest
Ringing the Yellow Pages all alone

You say your life will be the death of you
Tell me, do you wash your hair in honey dew?
And long for all of them to fall in love with you
But they never do
No they never do

I'm gonna tell you something good about yourself
I'll say it now and I'll never say it about no one else

I'm gonna tell you something good about yourself
I'll say it now and I'll never say it about no one else
About no one else

Camera Obscura: 'Underachievers Please Try Harder'
Remember seeing this in the window of a record show when I was in Glasgow a couple of years ago. Nice name, curious 'school report' type title and a great sleeve! Didn't buy it though ....... went for a haircut instead.

Heavily derivative of Belle and Sebastian, however (C.O.'s) Traceyanne's tunes are much stronger than former B&S sulker Isobel's frustratingly childish and coy efforts. But I really don't like the line about washing hair in honey dew. Please try harder.

yes, very derivative of b&s and a little too twee at times, but i like them anyway.

the honey dew line does look naff on paper (monitor) but is much better when sung, as are about 99% of great lyrics.

I bought Underachievers a couple of years ago and listened to it a bit at the time. This thread made me dig it out and listen again on the way to work today.
And very good it is too.
There, just thought I'd share that with you all.

what a great great Teenage Fanclub concert yesterday in Munich. Thanks, Francis &co. (including Eugene Kelly)!! wish the Go-Betweens had such an enthusiastic (and young) audience - their concerts would be even better.
