Listening to the commentary during the recent England-Australia cricket series, I noticed regular references to 'boundary riders'. I don't recall hearing this term before during many years of listening to cricket commentaries. Have I just become more aware of the term due to the Go-Betweens song, or has it only recently started being used?

Either way, it puts a nice new spin on the song.

A good point at which to say 'I was there'. I got two tickets for the final day at the Oval back in January for the princely sum of £10 a throw. Of course, back then, everyone thought it'd be a 5-0 series of three-day tests, and not to England. Maybe my best investment ever.

My Aussie friens will not be pleased with my treachery... but I'm glad that England won the Ashes. Well done.

Re the boundary rider idea, it may have bled through from Australian Rules football. TV broadcasts of the AFL in the last ten years have always included someone at grass level giving updated information on injuries, umpiring decisions, coaches' decisions to move players from position to position etc.

Pádraig, maybe Australia needs to start playing the Republic at cricket. After reading Portrait of The Artist As A Young Man... which is full of cricketing references... and knowing Samuel Beckett played for Ireland (one assumes for the Free State)... maybe it's not such a silly idea.

Anyway the current Aus team of big-heads and old crocks might be able to win the damn series, that's clearly a benefit.

Hi Rob,
The Irish Cricket team is a 32-county team - i.e. an All-Ireland team. Other sports that have a unified team would be Rugby Union, Hockey etc.
These sports would have been played as All-Ireland teams before the partition of Ireland (1922) and they kept this up afterwards..

Yeah, but the best Irish cricketer, Ed Joyce, is close to switching to playing for England. He could end up playing against his brother Dominic in the 2007 cricket World Cup! See here for more details www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/general/story.jsp?story=662396

By the way, I fully support Ed Joyce making that switch. The man is very talented and wants to play test cricket at the top level.
