Having attacked the integrity of long time contributor and GB's biographer - David Nichols, would Mr Pestorius be kind enough to start making a few original contributions to the board, as it's gone kinda quiet since Mr Pestorius decided he was 'king of the castle' and others were dirty rascals. Which reminds me I must drop by his "gallery" some day, and repay him the level of courtesy he has extended to long time contributors on this board. If anyone wants to join me make sure to bring along your own bucket of paint.

as much as i hesitate to contribute to or promote the level of bile that's dripping all over the above post, i have to say that i do agree with the basic point that it'd be nice if nichols would make an appearance around here. i've found him to be an invaluable source of info on all sorts of topics, and i'm sure i'm not the only one who misses his contributions here.

It seems as if the nastiness that the "Robert interview" thread dissolved into really took the steam out of this board. I too hope David returns, but Pestorius had some worthwhile information to contribute before the blowup too. It seems that many (most?) of the flareups I've witnessed since I've known about this board (early last year) have been of the "I'm more of a Go-Betweens expert than you" variety. But let's face it--the two people who can REALLY answer most of these questions/controversies don't post here and probably don't read the board. And even if they did post here, do you think their word would be 100% gospel truth? The ambiguities are part of what contribute to the GoBs mystique. Besides, it's really more interesting if we don't understand EVERYTHING about G&R, their songs, their personal lives, etc., isn't it?

I agree with both of the above two postings. I think I'll go listen to the Cannanes' "Arty Barbecue."

Here here. I also miss D. Nichols's contributions.

And who honestly gives a shit about fanboy jostling for authority? I doubt Nichols does. IMO his book's a top, entertaining read.

I do wish D. Nichols would pipe up.

I thought the book was a great read too. It told me more about the Go-Betweens that I had ever known (and I've interviewed Robert twice and Grant once), even if it did not answer every question I had.
Ambiguity is good, as Kurt said.

I also hope that David Nichols comes back to this board soon.

I dropped in to see what was happening, and thank you to all of the above for your kind comments.
I was not chased off the board by anyone except myself - if that makes sense. I was starting to get a bit obsessive and (as some have pointed out) forgetting the democratic nature of this kind of forum. It is difficult to strike a balance between being an interested contributor/consumer and feeling like an authority of some sort or other, and worrying about looking self-promoting. I am also horrendously busy with other writing and teaching work particularly for the next month or so.
So thanks again, but I think I will continue to be absent for the time being, maybe drop in occasionally.

A friend has just alerted me to this reprise of the 'Robert Interview' thread - I have been on the road myself for the last month and not following proceedings.

With respect to the 'comments' of the coward (hiding behind the mask of annonymity), who initiated this thread, I say nothing other than vexatious and threatening posts, which plainly involve a contravention of the criminal law, should not be tolerated.

With respect to the more substantive matters, I have made it clear in earlier posts that if I have something to say I'll say it. In this regard, I have tried to restrict my contributions to subjects in respect of which I have some direct knowledge. For example, this might include situations where I have worked with one or more members of the group on a project (and hence know something about what occured), or where I have conducted or participated in published interviews with RF — the first of which took place back in May 1980, when the late Graham Aisthorpe and I interviewed RF (following his return to Brisbane after recording the Postcard Records single), for Aisthorpe's short-lived but important 'Backstage' magazine.

This is where I differ a little bit from David Nichols, who does not similarly limit his reach to subjects in respect of which he has some direct experience, or has otherwise carried out the necessary research.

I think anyone posting here over the last few weeks has seen the havoc the david pestorius virus has wrecked upon our community.

In the interests of the continuing (relative) health of the Go-Betweens community can I suggest that people do not respond to Mr pestorius.

The man is a compulsive attention seeker who seems to take every possible opportunity to start a flame war.

This seems like an extreme measure but how else can interesting threads develop with this guy lurking malevolently in the wings, waiting to pounce on any perceived slight?

I am posting anonymously because I don't want my name associated with the foul mouthed harangue that is bound to follow this message.

"The eggs of irony could not be so abundantly laid, were we not knee deep in geese."

fsh, if your first post in this thread wasn't the attempt to start a flame war, then I don't know what is.

fsh, I agree with many of your sentiments, though I have to say you don't help eradicate the sour taste left by a pointless pissing contest by starting...yet another pointless pissing contest.

That interview thread, coupled with the seemingly interminable one about the sound quality of Ocean's Apart, sucked a lot of oxygen out of this board. How about a nice chat about our favourite b-sides or something to clear the air?

Yeah, sorry about that. To be honest laziness is begining to set in. I didn't even write that last message, I just stole it from somewhere else and changed the name.
