I'm merely a huge fan, almost to the point where I fail to be objective about his work. This makes me rather dull and uncritical, I'm afraid, lacking any great insight into the great man's art. I can reel off some dates and studio pickers, but this is just empty trivia as far as I'm concerned. Therefore, I don't think myself deserving of the "ologist" moniker. I'm flattered though. | ||

I write too many self-indulgent overlong things on here as it is or else I'd outline what I mean by "Dylanesque." The short version is that I love the folks who were influenced by him. I watched both installments of the Scorsese documentary on Dylan and enjoyed them very much. It was fascinating to be reminded, once again, of how extreme the cult of the pop icon was in the 1960s. I think that was when the adulation of pop figures peaked. Dylan was obviously a spectacularly talented person in the area of poetry but nobody, including Dylan, merits the press conferences and other nonsense that he was subjected to. Unlike the writer in the Guardian, I have no difficulty believing Dylan's current disclaimers. He was just a talented young guy that all these other people were projecting their fantasies on. It's a wonder the stress from all these people's demands didn't push him into a mental ward. I don't get the star thing and I never did. I can't imagine there are very many people who want to totally give up their own lives and identities just to satisfy the emotional cravings of a multitude of people they don't know and wouldn't even be able to relate to. It seems to be generally assumed that Robert Forster wanted to be a big star and maybe he did when he was too young to know what that means. I wonder if he does now. I seriously doubt it. My guess is that he just wants to have an appreciative audience and enough money to live on reasonably and without stress about it running out. Ditto Grant. Unfortunately, even that is hard to achieve. |
