Looking through the gigography I couldn't find this gig, but I'm sure I saw the band in this venue. Tell me I wasn't dreaming. |

Also missing was a fantastic gig at the Piggery at Byron Bay, 1989??? It was around Christmas time I think as I can remember a rumour that all of the Brisbane bands were heading home for Christmas. The gig was "Ups and Downs" followed by "Died Pretty" and then "The Go Betweens". A mate of mine on the local paper found out that Ups and Downs and Died Pretty had a "disagreement" as to who was the bigger band. Died Pretty won because they were supposedly big in Italy (which an Italian friend has since told me was crap). Ups and Downs came on with one of their unfortunately regular(at that stage) terrible mixes, I think without a sound check. Died Pretty were at the height of their powers and Peno entered stage right after about a 5 minute build up to one song. Then the Go Betweens came on. Robert was flirting and teasing all of the beach girls in the front row. A GREAT GIG!!!....but where is it on the gigology??? |

Also, there are two Sydney gigs missing from 1988. One of them at the Venue, Dee Why, the other at the theatre in Enmore (the name of which escapes me), where they were supported by the Died Pretty, as well as a hypnotist and a magician who specialised in children's parties! It was billed as the Night of Miracles. I should be able to get the exact dates when I dig up my diaries. Plus, I should have pics of the Dee Why gig, and some black and white pics of the Warwick University gig in 1987 and Grant McLennan at the Prince Patrick Hotel in Melbourne (which I thought was in 1995, but the gigography only has one dated 1997). I was lucky to make that one as I arrived in Melbourne the day before – after a 2700 mile bike ride from Cairns! |

Ignore my last point. I obviously can't read properly. Yes, it was 1995 for GM in Melbourne. Oh, and I've got the setlist somewhere too... |

Pádraig, thanks for that! It's a while since I lived in Sydney, and the memory's obviously failing... Lindy, I'll try to get the pics sorted, but I'm stupidly busy at the moment (sub ed/journalist on a science fiction magazine and freelance cycling writer...) and not at home for a couple of weeks (I'm on important cat-sitting duties!). |

I can't remember the year, but I booked the GoB's for a London show at New Merlins Cave, Kings Cross, a fond farewell as they were going back to Oz, with all the proceeds paying for their air fares. The PA was turned off past closing time by an irate landlord, but the band continued with an acoustic Cattle and Cane, carried along by the audience singing the vocals. There was also a minor stage invasion. It was very emotional, as well as very funny in parts. I can't see it in the gigography either, yet some of us old farts still reminisce about it. |

Adam Sanderson? THE Adam Sanderson of Jasmine Minks fame! Must be, I saw TV Personalities at New Merlins Cave and remember there was some kind of Minks / Kings Cross connection. Wow, those early singles, brilliant . . . “They took the chain and they broke the links / The revenge of the Jasmine Minks! / Cold Heart / Warm Hands” My friend an I organised a Minks gig in Lincoln, do you remember it, were you sill in the band then, around 87? |

I don't think I've ever been called the definitive article, but I am the guy who was in the minks. I ran the club in New Merlins Cave, Kings Cross, amongst others, for about a year. I can't recall if I played Lincoln in 87, I did hundreds of gigs with the Jasmines, and with time passing they have tended to blur. The Go-Betweens was definitely my favourite booking. They remain one of my favourite all time acts. |
