Has anyone heard Belle and Sebastian's 'Shoot the Sexual Athlete'? It pays tribute to the Go-Betweens, and was recorded at a Peel session in June 2001. It's not a good song. In fact it's easily the worst Stuart Murdoch-penned number I've heard, giving the impression that it was conceived on the spot. I believe the lyrics are as follows: "Now I'm in a band people try to make me do things - kiss arses, and pay tribute. But I'm inclined today to do those things anyway, and I don't care who hears it. Cause I'm a fan of The Go-Betweens: a fan of Robert, and I always have been. But I like Grant - though I've never met him - because he's charming. Of all the stars and all the whiskey scars I'd take them home to my mum and dad. Yeah he's charming, but he's a troublemaker too; he amuses me greatly. I like Lindy and I saw Vickers. Pete stole the setlist, and the itenerary. He wrote my name down as Tourette boy: It was hard but so is life. I was making button badges, and I had too much time on my hands. I coloured them by hand: Pere Ubu and the Sugarcubes. Kids came in to watch it, but Pete and Shaun just scorned, just like they scorned Robert. But I secretly love the big guy. He dressed just like Sherlock Holmes, and he fixed us with an inquisitive eye before singing such romances that only the sorts trampled under foot by Thatcher could appreciate their love... Would appreciate their love." |
