Does the song Metal & Shells exist, or is it a working title for another song?

Apart from that, it's nice to see John Peel is so highly regarded still on the BBC website.

metals & shells was a working title for what i think (if memory serves me correctly, and often it doesn't) became the song 'before hollywood.'

I see, I wonder if anyone out there has access to the tracks from the first Peel Session.
Was it ever broadcasted?

Hello, William.
So is Jeff correct about Metal & Shells? It's a strange name for a song, I'd understand if the phrase was in the lyrics.

Yes, Metal & Shells is an early version of the track Before Hollywood, with different verses - but the "make me last" and the "it's thunder town" part in the end are still there. The music is more or less identical.

"I said that I - just not sure - metal and the shell."

The song was recorded for the John Peel Session in August and by October, the lyrics completely changed face - this seems to be a common trait in a lot Go-Betweens songs, where the lyrics get a huge makeover between demo and completed form.

... and sometimes, as I'm sure many here would know, that makeover is sometimes on-going in nature. That is to say, the makeover continues beyond the 'completed form'. RF especially is known for this sort of thing. They may not be huge changes, but they are carefully considered, I would say. 'People Say' - to take a track that has been recorded again, albeit live, recently - is an example that immediately comes to mind.

'Five Words' comes to mind as a song that received a massive make-over *after* the "completed" album version. The Peel session version (which I've always preferred, musically and lyrically) has lyrics that take a turn for the utterly absurd and hilarious.
