For those outside Australia, the ARIA awards are the annual Australian music awards - equivalent of The Brit Awards in the UK or the Grammys in the States.

Great to get any recognition - but 'Adult Contemporary'??!! That's a category that puts me in mind of Kenny Gee.

Which reminds me, what did Kenny Gee say to David Sanborn when they met in an elevator? "This place rocks!!".

Of course, I went to bed early thinking that the Go-Bs would never win an aria and missed it. Were they actually there?

Finally a little recognition from the inept Australian record 'industry'
Without sounding cynical, does anyone believe that as great an album as Ocean's Apart is would the band have recieved a nomination if they WEREN'T ON A MAJOR ?
Whatever, it is great to see the band finally getting some recognition in their home country.
I personally believe they should be inducted into the 'Hall of Fame' whatever that may be along with Nick Cave & Mick Harvey, The Triffids & The Laughing Clowns.

No they weren't there. In fact the presentation of the 'Adult Contemporary' award wasn't even shown during the live telecast on channel 10. It was only mentioned after one of the add breaks along with other ghetto awards such as best engineer, best album cover etc.

Still, there was a nice little mention in an article on the ARIAs in today's Sydney Morning Herald (by Bernard Zuel):

"Perhaps the most surprising breakthrough was by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan. The pair formed the Go-Betweens while at university in 1977, spent the 1980s being ignored by the mainstream and had a decade apart before re-forming the Go-Betweens in 2000."

"Last night they received their first ARIA award (best adult contemporary album) for Oceans Apart, the band's ninth album, released 28 years after their first shows."

Recognition is good, but I agree with Mark: "adult contemporary"--ugh. I don't blame them for not being there to pick up the award. But maybe that phrase doesn't have as negative a connotation in Australia as it does in the U.S.? Here, it's the territory of Celine Dion, Phil Collins, and other easy listening crap. Who were some of the other contenders in the category?

You guys should also check out "In Case We Die" by Architecture in Helsinki, which was also nominated. I reckon it's equally as good as Oceans Apart...if not better.
