We're going to the World Cup! And I was there tonight to witness it. What an atmosphere.

Nothing to do with The Go-Betweens, though I think Robert is a fellow football fanatic.

Yeah well done the Aussies. I hate Uruguay, they've always been a cynical team. Saw the winning penalty live in dramatic slowmotionesque fashion on my PC (some awful internet TV channel with a slow connection). So on my screen Aloisi's kick was stuck in mid-air and the keeper was half-commited leaving me agape...eventually it hit the net. Talk about technical melodrama!

So Pádraig who are you supporting this Saturday at Lansdowne?!

May I just say well done to the Aussies. You've actually qualified for a sporting event involving a sport played well by more than ten nations. At this rate you'll qualify again in 2038.

Well Done - how did sicknote Kewell play?

I remember Robert going on about Australia signing Beckham in Manchester after Beckham was leaving for Madrid. He said Aussies were going to pay Ł1.50 as a transfer - I said they we're robbed.

Enjoy your early mornings watching the socceroos!

Cheers
Jon

Kewell was a revelation Jonathan. He really played superbly; and stepped up to the plate to take the first penalty. I hope he can now replicate that form for Liverpool. Viduka showed great leadership as captain too.

I hope to get to Germany for the World Cup, so no early morning kick-offs for me if I can work it out.

Graham, I'm going for Ireland over Australia on Saturday, as I'm sure you would go for Wales over the US in some sport that both your nations are reasonably good at (can't think of one right now though).

Graham, that above reads kind of like a diss, but it was not meant to be. Wales is good at rugby and the US is not. It's pretty much the opposite with football.

Pádraig I was just totally confused. I'm 100% Irish, but live in Freiburg, Germany. So much for Wales and the US!! :-)

Of course, the big story is Trinidad and Tobago, who qualified with the first white player to play for them for 60 years - a guy called Birchal, I think, who plays in the sunny north west for Port Vale.

Graham, sorry about that. I'm mixing you up with another board regular who is a Welshman with an Irish mother who lives in the US. Sorry! I think his name is Graham too. This is terrible, my inability to remember names even stretches to the web now. Sorry to the US-based Welshman also.

As for T&T, yes, fantastic result. Dwight Yorke has been playing very well for Sydney FC in the A League. I expect a big boost in the attendance for Saturday's game against Perth after Australia's and T&T's qualification.

What are the attendances like generally?

Averaging a little over 10,000 per game. But Sydney is averaging about 16,000 per home game while New Zealand (yes, there is a team based in Auckland, called New Zealand, in the A-League) are only getting less than 4,000 per game. They have won one game and lost 11 so far. No draws. I can't see them surviving.

There will be well over 20,000 at tonight's Sydney vs Perth game. Lots of bandwagon jumpers. And that's a good thing, so long as some of them stay on the wagon for the long haul.

A bit of success always brings in new support, some of it flaky. I wonder what Ireland's crowds were like before they started to qualify for major tournaments. And my club Chelsea's support had slithered in the very unsuccessful 1980s - look at the crowds now.

It is a shame that Ireland didn't make it, one of the best supported countries in recent tournaments.
Australia next year, it will be interesting to see how well they do. Japan 2002 saw a lot of giantkillings, Senegal and South Korea in particular.
Looking forward to the draw on December 9th.

I don't know which is better - all cups and no support or vica versa, but I'll ask Jordan the next time I'm talking to her.

It's a game of two halves, I'm afraid Pete.
