Terrific solo show by Robert at the Sydney Theatre Company on Friday night. I've never seen him without a band before (apart from the show he did with Grant in the same venue back in 2005) and was worried that he might not be able to carry it off.

But he was wonderful. The theme of the evening was '15 songs about Syndey' - with each number having some connection (however loose) with Sydney. He introduced each song with an explanation of the Sydney connection. The stories were sometimes long and convaluted but always interesting and funny. The description of his and Grant's road trip Sydney in the late '70s, which included getting hold of a copy of Playboy (then banned in Queensland) for the Bob Dylan 'wild mercury sound' interview was hilarious.

He performed songs from throughout the Go-Betweens and his solo career including Part Company, Darlinghurst Nights, Clouds, Dive for Your Memory, Danger in the Past, Spring Rain, Surfing Magazines, Born to a Family, Pandanus, Lee Remick, and Streets of Your Town.

He also debuted a new song called 'I Love Myself and I always Have' which sounded great (and very funny).

The whole night was a real treat for a very attentive and appreciative audience.

I was there too, having somehow landed a front-row seat, for what was an excellent gig. I'd missed out on seeing that Sydney Robert/Grant concert a few years ago and had always regretted it, so seeing Robert do this set was really the next best thing. Hearing a bunch of songs I thought I was never gonna hear live was really something. That roadtrip story was pretty hilarious too---besides picking up the Playboy issue they were also happy to finally find the Monkees' 4th album. Making the night even better, after the show Robert was signing gear and talking to fans in the 'Ruth Cracknell Room' (it was part of the Sydney Writer's Festival afterall....). He was very gracious. It was nice getting my copies of The 10 Rules of Rock And Roll and Liberty Belle signed, and amusing him with a nerdy injoke (when doing 'I Love Myself And I Always Have' he was joking about doing a concept album of love songs to himself, so when talking to him I suggested if he ever was going to do it he should call it Self Portrait (Bob Dylan Ripped Me Off)) was just the capper on a great night.

The order may be a little off, but this was most of the setlist:

Darlinghurst Nights
Part Company
Spring Rain
Lee Remick
Your Turn My Turn
Dive For Your Memory
I'm Alright
Surfing Magazines
I've Been Looking For Somebody
Born To A Family
Clouds
Love Is A Sign
Rock and Roll Friend
Pandanus
Streets Of Your Town
---
I Love Myself And Always Have ('world premiere')
Danger In The Past

I believe there was one more song in the encore, because he said he was going to do like Vampire Weekend and have a three-song encore.

Wow, that's a great set Shane. In fact, of all those posted over the last several years, that's one of the better and most consistent set lists I've seen.

Twas a good one... to add a little more detail, these are the reasons Robert gave for most of the songs being connected to Sydney:

Darlinghurst Nights: Obvious.
Part Company: While the music had been written in London a while previous, the lyrics came to Robert while in Sydney. The 'there's her handwriting/that's the way she writes' line came from him commenting on a note that Lindy had left behind one day.
Spring Rain: The clip was filmed in Sydney.
Lee Remick: This is where the Dylan/Playboy/Monkees story was told.
Your Turn My Turn: Recorded in Sydney.
Dive For Your Memory--I'm Alright: Ditto.
I've Been Looking For Somebody: Inspired by walking through Sydney streets at night.
Born To A Family: Robert's parents were married in Sydney.
Clouds--Love Is A Sign: See above... though he mentioned Clouds was the last song he wrote for 16 Lovers Lane.
Rock And Roll Friend: Another one inspired by Sydney experiences... trying to imagine his lifestyle as seen by his then girlfriend who followed a normal 'day' schedule rather than his 'night' schedule.
