I think Bellavista Terrace is a good compilation but could have been even better with slightly different tracklisting.. I would suggest: 1. love goes on 2. quiet heart 3. before hollywood 4. cattle and cane 5. twin layers of lightning 6. part company 7. the wrong road 8. streets of your town 9. draining the pool for you 10.the house that jack kerouac built 11.bye bye pride 12.bachelor kisses 13.spring rain What does every one else think? |

I think my fantasy Bellavista Terrace tracklisting would look something like this: 1. Loves Goes On 2. Head Full Of Steam 3. That Way 4. Part Company 5. Cattle And Cane 6. Unkind & Unwise 7. Bow Down 8. Bye Bye Pride 9. Man O'Sand To Girl O'Sea 10. The House That Jack Kerouac Built 11. Bachelor Kisses 12. Streets Of Your Town 13. Spring Rain 14. Rock 'n Roll Friend and if i could add 2 more songs 15. Hammer the Hammer 16. Rare Breed (Peel Session version) I always thought Was There Anything I Could do was a weak choice for the opening track, not to mention, a track not really worthy of being on a 'best of' comp in the first place. I also thought it strange that Lullaby wasn't represented by at least one song, as I think One Thing Can Hold Us or Your Turn, My Turn both could've fit okay alongside everything else. I know Robert & Grant have stated their disdain for that album numerous times, but still... |

Since they did two songs from "Lullaby" at the Barbican, evidently they don't hate everything on the album. "It Could Be Anyone" is one of my favorite Grant songs and also deserves to be on a comprehensive GoBs compilation. I agree with you, Jeff--"Hammer the Hammer" is a serious omission from "Bellavista Terrace"--I'd bump "That Way" in a heartbeat to include it. I have to quibble with your omission of "Draining the Pool for You," though. However, I actually like how "Bellavista" tracks in its U.S. running order--though it's not a very daring compilation, it's very listenable and a good introduction for newbies to the band. "Was There Anything" is more uptempo than most of their stuff, which is why I think it merits inclusion and actually isn't bad as a lead-off track. But as a fan, I prefer chronological compilations with rarities, not just obvious album tracks. Someday, we'll be analyzing the contents and running order of a post-2000 GoBs compilation. While none of the three albums are quite up to the best of the '80s, I think a stunning compilation could be made from them already. |

Not bad, not bad. I, by the way, have a fantasy tracklisting for Bellvista Terrace, too. How about this? 1. Cattle and Cane 2. Bachelor Kisses 3. Streets of Your Town 4. I Just Get Caught Out 5. Spring Rain 6. Was There Anything I Could Do? 7. Bye Bye Pride 8. Head Full of Steam 9. Your Turn, My Turn 10. Right Here 11. Hammer the Hammer 12. Lee Remick 13. People Say 14. Cut it Out! 15. Love Goes On! 16. Part Company In addition, I also imagine a bonus disc featuring single B-sides and previously unreleased material. Check this lot out: 1. The Life at Hand (B-side of Spring Rain) 2. Little Joe (B-side of Head Full of Steam) 3. Rare Breed (B-side of Bachelor Kisses) 4. Wait Until June (B-side of Streets Of Your Town) 5.When People are Dead (B-side of Right Here) 6. Don't Let Him Come Back (B-side of People Say) 7. Casanova's Last Words (from The Antipodes EP) 8. World Weary (from Elektrika Revmata compilation album; previously unreleased in Australia) 9. Rock and Roll Friend (B-side of Was There Anything I Could Do?) 10. Karen (B-side of Lee Remick) 11. By Chance (B-side of Hammer the Hammer) 12. Just a King in Mirrors (B-side of Part Company) 13. Newton Told me (Outtake from Spring Hill Fair) 14. Doo-Wop in A (Bam Boom) (Previously unreleased in Australia) 15. Mexican Postcard (Previously unreleased in Australia) How about that? More Go-Betweens for your dough, I s'pose. |

You gotta squeeze "Sweet Tasting Hours" on there somewhere, Brook! Lindy's only duet w/Robert, as far as I know. (Or is she singing the background parts of the chorus on "To Reach Me"?) |
