Ok everyone, here's a tougher question. The top 5 songs by anyone. Here's mine. 1. Apology Accepted- Go- Betweens 2. A Sailor's Life- Fairport Convention 3. Pink Moon- Nick Drake 4. Breakin' In My Heart- Tom Verlaine 5. All Along the Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix Experience The last two have IMO the best guitar solos of all time. |

Interesting, if rather impossible, category. You have some great picks on your list, no question. Instead of giving it the thought it deserves, I'll give five that come to mind right now plus some that could easily be on the list too. 1. Tangled Up In Blue - Bob Dylan 2. Marquee Moon - Television 3. Superstitious - Stevie Wonder 4. Venus In Furs - Velvet Underground 5. The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen Bubbling under: "Another Girl, Another Planet," Only Ones; "For Shame of Doing Wrong," R & L Thompson, "From A Motel 6," Yo La Tengo, "White Man In Hammersmith Palais," the Clash, "My Favorite Things," Coltrane; "Heavenly Pop Hit," the Chills; "Makes No Sense At All," Husker Du, any one of many GoBs (couldn't name my fave), Beatles, Dylan, and Costello songs...like I said, an impossible question. They're all songs I never get tired of--where every listen is as thrilling as the first time. |

Sorry to start another list, abigail but you have to admit there's a tremendous diversity here that wouldn't be found on alot of other boards. I've always thought that the Go-Betweens attracted that sort of person. Excellent stuff here, especially the Can and some that will get me scrambling to amazon to find. Thanks for indulging me. |

An impossible question Mark! (Even if I did spend countless teenage hours doing my annual Top 100). But ...Watchtower would definitely be in my top 10 if I sat down long enough to work it out. Here, though, is what came up when I pressed shuffle on the iPod: 1 Shack - Mood Of The Morning 2 David Byrne - Don't Fence Me In 3 The Jam - Burning Sky 4 Julieta Venegas - Lo Que Pidas 5 JZ & DJ Danger Mouse - What More Can I Say? And here's what are my most played on the iPod: 1 The Chills - The Male Monster From The Id 2 Idlewild - A Modern Way Of Letting Go 3 Brendan Benson - Tiny Spark 4 Bike - Take In The Sun 5 Hal - Play The Hits |

I could take my top 5 from Itunes but when I think about it there are others I seem to prefer but the itunes list is as follows Thunder Road-Sprinsteen Promised Land Little trigger-Costello Halleluja-probably John Cale's version Out of time-Blur I don't know some how that does seem very representative, but costello and springsteen seem to follow me everywhere. |

Lots of songs I like on other people's lists; so much so that I can make another top 5, just using songs that other people have suggested (and ignoring the Gobs songs, that I'm sure we all love): Hurricane - Bob Dylan Belle & Sebastian - String Bean Jean Hallelujah - John Cale's version Hairstyle of the Devil - Momus Big Louise - Scott Walker Great, great songs. |

Yeah David, I was thinking about my choice and really wanting to change them. I realised I'd not included alot of my favourites just the ones on iTunes, which got me thinking of other great songs, particularly Billy Bragg I couldn't decide which was my favourite of his but "Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards" is up there with Saturday Boy and Greeting to the New brunette" |

Ok, our top 5 will change every day. Geoff, for more jingle jangle, check David's wonderful choice of "Perfect Skin" above. All of these entries remind me of all sorts of things I wished I'd remembered. So, today's list: 1. What's So Funny About Peace, Love & Understanding?--Costello version 2. Number One is to Survive--Textones 3. Pressure Drop--Toots & the Maytals 4. Don't Talk to Strangers--Beau Brummels 5. Let Me Down Easy--Betty Lavette and number 6, because it has to be there, is "Cruisers Creek" by the Fall. |

Many people here have mentioned Felt but I don't think I have ever even heard a single Felt song. I did, however, once buy a double CD compilation by the Felt guy's next band. This was many years ago but I clearly recall how shit I thought it was and how I wondered what planet people were on in considering Laurence an overlooked genius. So, down the years, I have always raised my eyes to heaven at the mere mention of Felt. But a couple of nights ago, while looking for Springsteens's live box set, I came across the Felt guy's album and realised I had done him a great disservice. The double CD I had bought was not by Denim at all. It was by acid-jazz wankers Corduroy. Does anyone else have a moderately amusing, cotton-based fabric band name mix-up story to share? |

Yes, I suppose it's like the biography entitled "Genet" I bought from a bargain table about five years ago. I thought I was getting a bio of Jean Genet and instead took home a bio of a long-time columnist for New Yorker magazine who signed her columns "Genet." It wasn't bad; she spent most of her years living in Paris and drinking with the likes of Hemingway. |

Randy, my story is, unfortunately, true. Normally my musical mistakes involve buying the same CD twice (and I mean the exact same one - not The Go-Betweens situation where you buy the original, the remaster and then the re-remaster). I do have other mistaken purchases though. I recently bought a CD by Sloan thinking it was the Canadian power-pop band. But no, it was Spanish techno. Ironically, another Canuck power-pop band, The New Pornographers, have a song called Spanish Techno. Perhaps they made the same mistake? |

The lists on here are constantly reminding me of things I've forgotten. I suppose that's the great virtue of this particular thread; we are reminded of great things. I'm particularly delighted to see the Monochrome Set, a criminally underrated band if ever there was one. My problem is that my CDs live in a closet also inhabited by guitars and anything residing in the corners or on the lower shelves obscured by the guitar cases tend to get lost in the shuffle. And yes, Padraig, I also have been known to buy a CD only to discover that I already have it when it comes time to file it away. Tonight's nominations: 1. Mary, Open the Door -- Duffy Power (easily the most underrated British jazz/blues singer of any era) 2. Boy Child -- Scott Walker 3. Black Ticket Day -- Ed Kuepper, simple but forever effective 4. Like a Rolling Stone -- Dylan. Not very original but let's face it, so many great things that happened afterward flow from this one record. 5. All I See -- Linda Thompson and since we've all apparently agreed to make it a half dozen: 6. Midnight Rain -- Paul Kelly |

A coincidence that the Monochrome Set has been mentioned, over the last 2 weeks I have down loaded a few songs form Itunes having stumbled on them again on a compilation. I've not thought about them for decades.I think even saw them live. My 60's and 70's (excluding Punk)five would be: Girl From the North County- Nashville Skyline with Johnny Cash. Wouldn't It Be Nice-Beach Boys ( not a massive fan but this is perfect) Wall of Death-Richard and Linda Thompson Waterloo Sunset-The Kinks Caravan-Van Morrison Bonus ball to make it 3 form either side of the Atlantic The Night they Drove all Dixie Down-The Band |

I didn't know they played Peter. I'd love to have seen that. Glad to hear the Olympia was sold out. I think it's one of these albums that builds up its reputation over the years. I'm glad I got it when it first came out though. I saw them live just before the album came out at a very small venue in Temple Bar. There were only about 80 people at the gig but it was great nonetheless. |

Its great news Whipping Boy are back. Maybe a trip over to England will do them the world of good (Especially Liverpool or Manchester). While I'm on about Irish bands - I noticed The Frank & Walters are playing Liverpool (oh the Memories). What happened to A House, Something Happens and Bawl by the way? Cheers Jon |

Hi Jonathon...Dave Couse (and The Impossible) from A House has just released his second solo album. Tom Dunne from Something Happens hosts a decent radio show Pet Sounds on Today FM (He's had the Go-Betweens in session) and Bawl's Mark Cullen still releases records as Pony Club. Favourite Irish album this year is BellX1's "Flock" which is released in the UK in the next couple of months. |

This topic is a bloody great read...Heartworm - got to root it out now - haven't listened to it in years. 1. Bowie Life on Mars 2. Al Stewart Roads to Moscow 3. Van Morrison Sweet Thing 4. Josh Ritter Wings - maybe too new for a list like this but it's brilliant - I play it a lot. 5. Elton John Ticking (doubt if he's ever played it live - a song with a brutal theme - the best match of words and music he & Taupin ever managed) |

Heartworm - did root it out and bloody hell does it still sound good. Fantastic actually - the Honeymoon is Over reeks of sheer timelless class. How did I ever drop this off my listening rota, I'll never know! |

I saw Whipping Boy in Dublin just before Christmas and they were excellent. They played all of Heartworm, except for the last one, A Natural, and sounded as fresh today as ever before (though the singer is a bit of a nutter, which I'm not sure is a good/bad thing, but probably to blame for the original split). If you liked Heartworm (which I think is my favourite album ever), you really should try to find their last album ("Whipping Boy"), which song-wise is as good as Heartworm, though suffers from cheaper production. Live, the early pre-Heartworm stuff was a revelation, as I don't really like it on record. I just hope that they do some more stuff, as I think they are a hidden gem who could still have much to offer. Anyway, sorry for digressing. Tonight's top five in no particular order, off the top of my head is: 1. Soft Cell - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye 2. The Go-Betweens - The House Jack Kerouak Built 3. Whipping Boy - We Don't Need Nobody Else 4. The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out 5. David McComb & The Red Ponies - Memories (free download on Graham Lee's Triffids website) Though that'll probably have changed by the time I sober up tomorrow... |
