Many people here have mentioned Felt but I don't think I have ever even heard a single Felt song. I did, however, once buy a double CD compilation by the Felt guy's next band. This was many years ago but I clearly recall how shit I thought it was and how I wondered what planet people were on in considering Laurence an overlooked genius. So, down the years, I have always raised my eyes to heaven at the mere mention of Felt. But a couple of nights ago, while looking for Springsteens's live box set, I came across the Felt guy's album and realised I had done him a great disservice. The double CD I had bought was not by Denim at all. It was by acid-jazz wankers Corduroy. Does anyone else have a moderately amusing, cotton-based fabric band name mix-up story to share? | ||

Randy, my story is, unfortunately, true. Normally my musical mistakes involve buying the same CD twice (and I mean the exact same one - not The Go-Betweens situation where you buy the original, the remaster and then the re-remaster). I do have other mistaken purchases though. I recently bought a CD by Sloan thinking it was the Canadian power-pop band. But no, it was Spanish techno. Ironically, another Canuck power-pop band, The New Pornographers, have a song called Spanish Techno. Perhaps they made the same mistake? | ||

The lists on here are constantly reminding me of things I've forgotten. I suppose that's the great virtue of this particular thread; we are reminded of great things. I'm particularly delighted to see the Monochrome Set, a criminally underrated band if ever there was one. My problem is that my CDs live in a closet also inhabited by guitars and anything residing in the corners or on the lower shelves obscured by the guitar cases tend to get lost in the shuffle. And yes, Padraig, I also have been known to buy a CD only to discover that I already have it when it comes time to file it away. Tonight's nominations: 1. I didn't know they played Peter. I'd love to have seen that. Glad to hear the Olympia was sold out. I think it's one of these albums that builds up its reputation over the years. I'm glad I got it when it first came out though. I saw them live just before the album came out at a very small venue in Temple Bar. There were only about 80 people at the gig but it was great nonetheless. | ||

Tom Dunne from Something Happens hosts a decent radio show Pet Sounds on Today FM (He's had the Go-Betweens in session) and Bawl's Mark Cullen still releases records as Pony Club. Josh Ritter Wings - maybe too new for a list like this but it's brilliant - I play it a lot. 5. Heartworm - did root it out and bloody hell does it still sound good. Fantastic actually - the Honeymoon is Over reeks of sheer timelless class. How did I ever drop this off my listening rota, I'll never know! | ||

I saw Whipping Boy in Dublin just before Christmas and they were excellent. They played all of Heartworm, except for the last one, A Natural, and sounded as fresh today as ever before (though the singer is a bit of a nutter, which I'm not sure is a good/bad thing, but probably to blame for the original split). If you liked Heartworm (which I think is my favourite album ever), you really should try to find their last album ("Whipping Boy"), which song-wise is as good as Heartworm, though suffers from cheaper production. Live, the early pre-Heartworm stuff was a revelation, as I don't really like it on record. I just hope that they do some more stuff, as I think they are a hidden gem who could still have much to offer. Anyway, sorry for digressing. Tonight's top five in no particular order, off the top of my head is: 1. Soft Cell - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye 2. The Go-Betweens - The House Jack Kerouak Built 3. Whipping Boy - We Don't Need Nobody Else 4. The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out 5. David McComb & The Red Ponies - Memories (free download on Graham Lee's Triffids website) Though that'll probably have changed by the time I sober up tomorrow... |
